XXX Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Rand of course..the main character in the books and in whose name the Last Battle was fought.

Salvatore Tyrion- George R. Martin k. I voted for Nyn, Mainly because I also hated her early in the series, but grew to love her as she grew. Mat was my close second, but I liked Mat from the beginning, only disliking him while he was under the influence of the SL Dagger. I agree that it takes a good author to transform a hated character to a loved one. Mat was a character that was loved from the beginning, whereas Nynaeve managed to change my opinion of her totally (even before TGS and ToM).
Lord D Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Finlay Campbell in the Deathstalker series by Simon R. Green is probably my favourite fantasy character. He pretends to be a noble fop, but is the Champion of the Bloody Arena, and helps the good guys. SPOILER I really love the scene late in the series when Finlay finds out that his girlfriend has been sexually abused by her evil father. The death Finlay gave daddy dear was slow and painful. Unlike others, I believe that tyrants should get the justice they deserve, not just a quick death.
Lord D Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Other fantasy characters that I like are: Waylander the Slayer in David Gemmell Fist Coltaine in Steven Erikson's 2nd Book of the Malazans Surreal and Jaennelle in Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series. Dorothea SaDiablo in the same series is the evil character that I most hated in fantasy books.
Kmp Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Lord D, I would say that Rand was my 2nd favorite character, as a man I had a hard time warming up to Nyn your 2nd fav. I enjoyed watching her develop as well, just couldn't identify with her enough to even make top 5 though. On a different topic, how far are yup into the Malazan series? I have read probably north of 1k fantasy books, but I couldn't even finish book 1 of Malazan. It has a lot of good reviews and quite the loyal following, it just didn't grab me and I was about halfway through before I gave up. Probably the 1st fantasy book I haven't finished. Ieven got through a couple Mercedes Lackey books and they are terrible. Am I missing something?
Kmp Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 I forgot to add: Arlen Bales from Peter V. Bretts Demon Wars series as an all time favorite character. Kaladin from Sandersons Way of Kings series is gaining ground fast though. Hopefully Sanderson can accelerate the pace of that series now that WoT is finished. I think that series has the potential to be one of the all time greats in fantasy.
Kmp Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Crap! I forgot Kvothe from Patrick Rofthuss. A very close 2nd to all time favorite fantasy characters after Mat Cauthon.

I never said anything about Nynaeve being my 2nd favourite; maybe you got that confused with someone else. For me, Rand is my favourite and probably Mat 2nd. I did read all of the Malazan books; it's a very complex world with a lot of things happening, so it's not going to be to everyone's taste. The 2nd book is easily my favourite in that series, as Coltaine attempts to lead Malazan refugees across an entire continent that is torn by religious hatred.
esvath Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Nynaeve. Other fav characters: Moiraine Perrin Cadsuane Egwene (yeah, I am biased on Aes Sedai :P)
Glokta Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I consider Mat to be the greatest fantasy character I have ever read, and I have read alot of fantasy! So yuh, definetly voted for him. Hey Dusk, curious as to what some of your other favorite fantasy characters are? Cheers.Off the top of my head...Glokta - First Law Now I am blushing...
Tesseract Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Definitely Verin Sedai. She sacrificed so much for the greater good. Her death was an amazing end to the arc about exposing the black ajah.
Zjossy Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Ah... I vote for Siuan, as she was my first favorite (read NS first), however, it was a tie with Mat, Moiraine and Nynaeve.
mike hunt's here Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 My favorite is actually Tam al'Thor: 1. consistent 2. blademaster at an advance age 3. humble 4. called out Cadsuane as a bully 5. lit his son's funeral pyre. now if i can add my favorite characters of all time: 1. tehol beddict (malazan) 2. bloody nine (first law) 3. arlen (warded man) 4. sparrowhawk (earthsea) 5. will stanton (dark is rising series) 6. thomas raith (dresden books) 7. erik von darkmoor (old man version) 8. lobo and hitman (dc comics)
shinzingumi Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 once Min became a staple she easily became my favorite. she has a seemingly useless power and is otherwise completely ordinary, but thru her inner strength and unconditional love she was the anchor that kept rand in the light. of rand's three girls she loved him the best. not the most. but the best. rand wasn't competing with a kingdom or a people when it came to Min. a very close second is Asmodean. what a series this was, but oh what a series this would have been if his redemption story had been thrown in. the biggest surprise for me from this series is how my favored characters all gravitated to the second tier or lower. Min and Asmo, 1 and 2. in no particular order after... Verin. her and Asmo having dual redemption stories and winding up together at the end. at least in my version. Rhuarc, Gaul, Sulin, Uno, Aglmar, Damer Flinn, Jahar Narishma, Jur Grady, Asha' man Neald, Loial, Elyas, Thom, Olver, Suian, Leane, Juilin, Birgitte Silverbow, Sorilea, Berelain, Darlin, Hopper, Hurin, Ingtar of house Shinowa to name a few. lol. of the mains, Moiraine, Nyn, Mat, Lan. the last four of my favorite characters i'll mention are the four characters i use in a desperate hope that the greatness of this series is conveyed when asked "what's so great about WoT?" Gaidal Cain. think about it. he never actually does anything. he's just talked about the whole series. he's not even there at the end with the other heroes of the horn. he's one of the greatest heroes in the history of the world and he misses the last battle. yet doesn't it feel like he was a huge part of the story? Aemon al Caar al Thorin and Eldrene ay Ellan ay Carlan. last monarchs of Manetheren. Jearom. The greatest swordsman in history. defeated once. by a farmer. with a quarterstaff. only mentioned twice in the whole series. and yet it's imprinted in me from one scene. the saddest thing for me from this series is that it won't be expanded at all. forget the outriggers with mat. i'm talking about the rest. who doesnt want to read the fall of malkier/manetheren? the first lives of Gaidal Cain and Brigitte Silverbow? the story of Jearom? how all the heroes of the horn were bonded to it? too much will be left on the table.
Viperswhip Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Well, I don't get the results so far lol Min is basically the best girlfriend ever, though her insistence on following Rand into dangerous situations got his hand burned off. If not for her being there he would have almost certainly been taking captive by Semi, it was being forced to torture Min that allowed him to break the collar. Nynaeve would be my close second, then Amys, Bair, Avi, Rhuarc, Bael, guys like Dobraine.
Ishy_Reborn Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Favorites: Matt Rand Cadsuane Least Favorites: Egwene Gawayn Moraine Favorite protagonist in other fantasy: Ayra Stark Pug Kvothe Bayaz ( ok maybe not necessarily a good guy but well who in abercrombie's books really is )
Orange7 Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 Favorites From Wheel: Mat - Definitely a great character, although there were a few errors later on. Rand-Really associated strongly with him until the end of TGS. Even at the end, I could still always associate with Rand. Elyas - Who could resist a wolf who could interact so well with Tinkers. Shai'tan - A beautifully written character, who I feel deserved much more time than he was given. Elaida - Started leading the white tower in a great new direction before those traitors and their false Amyrilin arose. Renna - Got Egwene to shut up. Aginor - Dude just wanted some cute pets. It's not his fault that they tried to kill everything. Narg - He Smart. Favorites from others: Vin -Mistborn (Kind of like Min with Allomancy) Jon Snow - SIF Tyrion Lannister - SIF Tom Riddle - HP Kylar Stern - Night Angel Nathaniel - Bartimeaus
nool Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Favourite male character: Talmanes Favourite female character: Avi
Nikonis Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 Mat has to be my favorite character throughout the series, not sure exactly why though.
