I think a lot of that feeling is just nostalgia

No, it is definitely more than that. Player styles were different - player personalities were different (obv with diff people) - the overall way the game was played was different.

That's not a knock on how folks play now. Like I said, I've adapted and can be aggressive when needed, but I never was. I was always more cerebral and logic-oriented. I personally liked it better before. Still, there are some really good players now, just like there were some really good players before.

Yeah that's true

I think there used to be more of a...spirit that players had

They ran gambits and actually tried to outsmart the other players

I don't think that happens as often anymore

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

I remember a game where I revealed as cult and struck a deal with the mafia in order to secure a win. With the numbers of the cult & mafia combined, the town couldn't get the numbers to lynch me. I made a "deal" with the mafia to kill townies, with the plan to double cross them due to having recruited a mafia player (on both QTs).

Alas, that player was killed, and my plan went up in a spectacular blaze of fail. But man it was awesome while it lasted.

Peace might remember, he was the spokesperson on thread for the cult and laid out the details of my plan to the mafia. I was still hiding, and he was outed cult, so it made sense for him to be the person to talk about it. One of my favorite games, and I lost. THAT is proof right there of a different "spirit".

Do you think part of it is that a lot of older players don't play anymore, so you can't enjoy the same level of comfort with everyone?

No, that's not it at all. Some of my favorite players are newer, like Rand. I just don't like what DM mafia has become. It's not about strategy and scum hunting anymore. Now, many people are inactive and those that are active and try to play get lynched just for being active. And there was one game where I watched someone actually bully the other players with statements like "If you don't vote the way I say to vote, you'll be tomorrow's lynch." In what mafia universe is it okay to tell other people how to vote and threaten them over it? That's the worst of many examples I've seen that just aren't good sportsmanship. No offense, but when you said you don't think people should say when things are outside the spirit of the game, that struck me as yet another symptom of what's - I won't say wrong, because obviously it's okay with a lot of people - not to my liking here.

I'm not judging. I'm just saying that JN plays the game more like I like it than y'all do here now. In spite of their banter, which takes crude to new heights, they respect the game and have standards about what is and is not acceptable behavior. Yes, new guys get a bit of hazing and you have to be willing to put up with that to enjoy playing there. It's not for everyone.

Yeah, Rand, I'm afraid I'm taking a break from DM mafia for the forseeable future. Thanks for making me feel wanted. But, if Jack comes back, I'll be all over mafia here again. I never could resist playing mafia with him.

aww, thanks Lily!

I'm sad to see you go, hopefully Jack comes back, but when I'm old enough to go on JN, I'll start playing there too, hopefully everyone is still there.

I have a feeling that this is a cyclical phenomenon. That there will be some that get together and work at some logical twists to pull out. Some will fail miserably and others succeed.

I tried something like that trying to get an alliance with BG from the other mafia team in my first game. It failed due an error of mine but it did get me hooked on playing

Spectacular gambits.....hmmmm. I can see what you guys are saying. From what I've seen recently is that a heck of a lot of games are chock-a-block with relatively new players, this could account for much of the play styles. Also in games with Notbob and LZM etc, you learn only one major scumhunting technique, and that's just aggressiveness.

I like to use both instinct and logic when playing mafia. I favor instinct early, but as more evidence starts to pile up, I shift towards a more logic-oriented style. That being said, I never ignore my gut. I find that gut feelings are often for valid reasons, just ones you are not consciously aware of until you delve further.

ah man Verb, i'd like to read that one. i'd love to be in your shoes at that point to try pulling something like that.

see, one of the things i think is that players feel that you have to go in with the direct aim to pull one, when in fact most of the best moves i've seen pulled were done off the cuff out of neccessity cause people were backed into a corner. you can't force an epic play or even an epic gambit, for it to go down in the books with the likes of Kivams gambit.

i think this is what most of the newer players are failing to realize.

take the twofer gambit *grins at lily* that shit was 100% off the cuff but came off brilliant.

the one play that caused my addiction to the game, one of my proudest moments, was equally off the cuff. i was claimed finder, defacto town leader and could view not only peoples roles but also alignments and got recruited mid game by a scum team i'd helped windle down to 2 remaining members (1 of which was getting ready to be lynched)

so i had to pull a 180, and lead the town away from my surviving mate and we ended up winning the game. and only cause of fast talking and quick thinking and strategic NKs.

you just can force the greatest moves, cause forcing them leads to them blowing up in your face.

I'm rather proud of my fakeclaim as sensor when I was really survivor in the Elantris game. The claim didn't hold water, but the gambit got me viewed as town, which let me live through to the end.

I know we haven't played together in awhile Lily (at least on DM), but I'll miss having you around. I remember one of my first games here, I don't remember which one, but my character was a Minstral. You and Min made me feel really welcome, and I remember that being one of the things that got me hooked, not just on Mafia, but DM altogether.

Granted, Min was scum and NK'd me, but who remembers stuff like that?

Whatever happened to Min anyway?

Still one of my favorite games ever despite losing to Wombat.

so how bad you figure i'll screw up jn for you?

Was this directed at me, Cindy? I think you're a great addition over there.

Ishy, Min is busy with real life and is hardly on the computer anymore at all. And then, just to check email and things like that. She's not part of any communities anymore at all.

I'm glad we made you feel welcome. :)

Right now my top suspects are Razen, BG, wot13, and Verb.

Also wary of a few replacements, since I'm usually very wary of replacements.

I agree, this mafia grievances game is very interesting. Personally I think

Just fess up Hatter, I mean, Rand.

this was scummy. wrong thread bro.

I once tried to fake claim doc as a roleless innocent, after the real doc revealed in order to avoid being lynched. My hope was that the players would leave both potential docs alone and the mafia would be left with a case of wifom, but instead they all lynched me. A wonderful idea, but a bucket of fail in the end.
