I think they thought they'd figured it out - because when Kate was given a toy a while back she started to say it was lovely and that she would love it. People thought that was confirmation that the baby was a girl. But they've recently said they've not have a gender scan so don't actually know.

Makes no difference these days anyways thank goodness - I'm very happy about that. Not least because it means they won't be put under pressure to try try again till they get a boy heir and a spare. Now they can just be happy about having a baby without the Monarchy Establishment treating it like a failure if it is a girl.

I think 80% of babies arrive after their due date ... so we might have a little while later to wait anyways.

I think Diana will be in there somewhere if its a girl, Spencer if its a boy. I'd live to see it given a superhero name though! :D

Really? You think they could "get away" with having Spencer as one of the names? That would surprise me ... I still don't feel like the Crown is quite over the Spencer escapade.

And I agree with Ith, I'm glad Britain finally has gender neutral succession.

I'd like for them to go for something more unique than traditional. However nothing as unique as Apple, peaches or any kind of fruit/vegg colour or my favourites so far from the US side of things Geographical directons etc. just nice normal but unique.

o_O ... time for the medics to realise they've got human gestation time wrong? lol

Andrew, Charles, or George for a boy.

Alexandra, Catherine, or Mary for a girl.

Though if it were my baby it would be Arthur or Guinevere. :)

Not too sure if we're ready for another Bloody Mary ...

Most important decision is ... who are we going to send as the baby's Aes Sedai advisor? :P

LMAO! Well I'm glad we got that sorted out. Now just the pesky business of pushing the kid out, which I hear is finally in progress?

The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, Kensington Palace has announced.

The baby was delivered at 16:24 BST at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, weighing 8lb 6oz.

The palace said in a statement that the duchess and the baby were "doing well" and would stay in hospital overnight.

The news has been displayed on an ornate easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace in line with tradition.

A bulletin - signed by the Queen's gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, who led the medical team that delivered the baby - was taken by a royal aide from St Mary's to the palace under police escort.

The document said: "Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm today.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

The Kensington Palace press release said the Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," it said.

And the Prince of Wales, in a separate statement, said he and the Duchess of Cornwall were "overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.

"It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," he added.

Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."

I'm not going to lie, I was totally hoping for a little Princess.... both beacause of how freaking adorable she would be AND just to watch history being made with the succession laws being changed. I guess I just wish it was something we would see in our lifetimes, and it's so weird to realize that we won't, barring anything absolutely terrible happening. That being said, I'm happy he was born and they're both healthy, and I still can't wait to watch him grow up because he's still going to be adorable and I think they'll be awesome parents!

I know! They are going to make us wait a bit longer to find out his name though.

Wills and Kate: please say no to "George."

That's the leading contender ...but I kind of agree with you. Plus, if they have it as one of his names, he could still choose to "reign" by that name. That is why there is speculation that Prince Charles will actually reign as King George VII ...or Queen Victoria was really named (horribly) Alexandrina. Heck, a King or Queen can choose any regnal name they want, I believe.

I'm assuming George is a leading contender to honor the Queen's dad ...and perhaps because Charles might choose that name to reign, but I hope they go with something different. I think David or Alexander would be a nice first name ...

I like both of those but it was the Queen's Uncle David (King Edward) who abdicated the throne for his American divorced wife, Wallis Simpson.

I like Alexander and Michael.
