So Rand ended Chapter One telling Perrin it was paramount to keep Elayne from going to Caemlyn. What did he do to achieve this goal? He wrote a letter in which he insisted that she must go to Caemlyn ASAP. Great plan, Rand. It really showed the level of maturity you reached thanks to those LTT memories... ;)

 

I thought it was incredibly generous of Elayne to explain exactly this to us in the spectacularly subtle way that she did.

 

Awesome. This is right up there with the conflict issue as a major problem for me in Brandon's writing.

This linking scene is the first thing that really ever jumped out immedately as being wrong

Until now I've been willing to give Sanderson/TJ the benefit of the doubt. The inconsistencies were around relatively minor details due to being rushed.

They said this would not happen with this book.

And then they go and contradict a scene which is not only a climax of a book, but is regularly ranked as the most favourite scene in the series. This does not fill me with hope. This is actually unforgivable.

I could understand if it was a throw-away line. Or if the scene being contradicted was minor. I could understand if the circle in question was a combination we hadn't seen before.

But this wasn't. It was a direct correlation to the climax of Winters Heart. And it wasn't even only ONE mistake!

 

This ruined what could otherwise have been an enjoyable chapter.

öh what was it i just listened to ? i dont like any of it. The Pevara scene was awful , their dissuasion predictable the only slight tension was in the end . The Avihenda scene was near beyond the limit of the most terrible in the whole series. " Do wetlanders count tents as holds, i have toh" Elyne answers " oh avienda your are such a gem" for goodness sake it felt to me as Avihenda was a caricature of native people in the beginning of the 19 th century ( 1900 ) who must be civilized by an indulgent white stepmother . ghaaa it is terrible. and that is just to mention a fraction of the awful things that's in there

Listening to this chapter put a shiver down my spine. Putting things together from each of the sections of early released material, a chilling possibility occurred to me. And that possibility is that The Gathering Storm might be the best out of the last three books in this series.

 

The ending had better be mind-blowingly fantastic.

Pevara acknowledges that the five Aes Sedai she came with were turned to the Shadow and are now her enemies, five of her sisters including the leader of their group and the Keeper of Chronicles now made servants of Mazrim Taim. Pevara can't leave the Black Tower or send word for help, and at any given moment a dozen Dreadlords could walk into her room, tie her up, and escort her to be Turned. She then proceeds to worry about trivial and cliche plot elements, such as men, channelling, men who can channel, Androl, Logain, ghosts, her uncle, leather, etc. If anything, Pevara should be frantic at being trapped in a literal hell-hole, and filled with sorrow at her sisters who are now worse than dead. Instead, the scene goes on at the leisurely pace of an awkward WoT-ian romance being forged.

 

And what is Taim even waiting for, at this point? Why would he let Pevara stroll across his grounds instead of just Turning/killing her and being done with it? Did he read the script too?

 

Elayne's scene reads exactly like this, as well. Her capital city has just been overrun with Trollocks, half the residents are refugees, the other half probably boiling in Trollock stew cauldrons. Her nation is about to fall apart, there are tons of Darkfriends among her most trusted guards, the world is about to end... and she's like "OMG Aviendha, you and your wacky Aiel ways! Now you take your pretty butt and jump into my husband's sack, kiss kiss".

 

At this point, it's practically a certainty that the scene where Rand descends into Shayol Ghul will involve Nyneave and Moraine sharing observations about Lan's temper (and/or body features), and Rand throwing his arms at how incomprehensible women are. At this point, I will be hoping for the Dark One to lash out and

destroy them all.

 

I can think of at least one good reason why Pevara would not have been turned. It should be intuitively obvious to the most casual observer. ;P

Sid: I think you are right:( I mean how do you not noticed one of the rules of circles that is talked about all throughout the books??? It is even mentioned as a reason for the war of shadow, as the dark on touched the land, women became more jealous and thus started to refuse to circles as they would lose control of the flows.

What an unexpected treat, and a wonderful way to spend my conveniently free afternoon. I do love me some Pevara. Though I felt the Avi scene was an odd juxtaposition better suited for Ch1, I thought it was nice too and at the very least I'm not complaining.

More like, he expects her to get annoyed, then understand the ruse and be amused enough by it to think clearly and take his suggestion of staying for the meeting. Put any other way, he runs the risk of getting her back up.

I never bothered to check in the glossary to figure out how Taim or Rhuidean is supposed to really be pronounced, but listening to my first audiobook...

 

I have to thank Tor for doing that. Now I know I will never buy one. I can't go thru 8 hours of hearing TAH EEM....

just went to that page and saw the removal notice due to copyright objections ( presumably by Tor?). Can you just post it on dargonmount? or will there be copyright issues here as well?

Peter Ahlstrom just tweeted that Tor is not planning to release chapter 2 in written format before the full AMOL comes out and said that fans will have to transcribe it so this is doubly strange.

I can accept Pevara PoV as building up the tension, however a mediocre one, but if Aviendha PoV is the quality we are to expect from the rest of the book, it's going to suck big time. What was even the point of it?

 

Aviendha sneaking around and asking permission from Elayne to bang Rand: perfect way to use your time after learning your entire people may become little better than animals one day.

Rand's letter to Elayne and her reaction: stupidest thing in the books so far. Maybe Mat came and helped Rand write it. It feels a little like Brandon-era backstories we see from Mat.

 

 

I wonder one thing. We know some scenes were stripped from the book. Since they were cut, I assume they are less important than this Aviendha PoV. Well, considering nothing really happens in this chapter, what did Brandon write in those stripped ones? I am waiting breathlessly for River of Souls to find out.

I was just referring to what people have done in past years; I did not mean to imply permission to do so.

 

EDIT: A little more since Herid asked about it on Twitter. I wasn't aware they were sending a DMCA on this, and I don't know why now and not in previous years, though I speculate there may be some leftover issues from the prologue leak. There's also a huge rise in the last two years of the number of people who consume their writing electronically, and a public document can get a huge number of eyes and that won't make some people happy.

 

There's not anything I can do about it. They want this to be an audio preview, so officially, that's pretty much that. Irene's response on the issue on Tor.com is the official word.

I agree with your point, but I have to nitpick one thing. 1900 would be the last year of the 19th century, not the beginning. But man, that "absolute gem!" line made my brain hurt. Or my left stone.
