Brownie Quest - Round 8 (Finals)

Recommended Posts

The teams looked at one another, relieved.  None would fall on this day. They prepared to leave almost immediately, after checking over their supplies one last time, as they had no time to waste. Embarking on their journey through the landscape tensions began to ease. Teams spoke idly to each other and even other teams. They began to almost forget the events this morning. The Asha’man seemed to be taking care of the madman, so they felt confident he would not return.

Instead they listened to nature and creature in harmony. The soft wind, birds calling, insects buzzing. All seemed calm. Teams began to withdraw into themselves to discuss strategy and plans. Despite feeling better, it still never hurt to be prepared.

The Lightning Slingers had taken the lead once again, and caused all the other teams to stop suddenly when they realized the team in the front had done so. Some adventurers grew alert, testing weapons, but it was not danger ahead, they quickly realized. Instead it was a choice.

Three possible pathways stood before them. One continuing into a forested area, one heading down toward a large lake, and one leading up into the mountains. They would each have to choose.

Would they stay together again, or this time go their separate ways?

All Captains must vote:

Forest, Lake, or Mountain

You have 24 hours.

** Nikons team discussed their options in an organised and democratic manner. One member voted to take the path through the forest for a shady and cool walk with scenic nature however the others were quich to mention the dangers of the beasts who live in the forest or walking along the mountain path so close to the edge and also very high up. Ultimately they agreed on their decision and set off, leaving the other groups behind to decide for themselves. **

The Tainted Tricksters choose Lakeside path!

The lightning slingers have talked and the mountain pass looks ominous and we're not quite equipped for snow.... Who knows what can happen at the lake... We choose the Forest Path.

Good luck to us all.

The teams all discussed where they should go. After much debate the Tainted Tricksters were the first to act. They feared the mountain heights and surmised there may be beasts in the forest, so instead took the scenic route via the path down the lake. The path down went smoothly and a soft breeze rolled off the lake cooling the party. As they neared the beach they saw a solitary row boat tied to a dock. This path seemed to have certainly been the best to take they thought.

The team summarily decided to borrow the boat to make it across as there didn’t seem to be any other way around the lake without going all the way around. As they approached an elderly man in a hat strolled over and looked over the group.

“Hello fair travelers, it appears you are requiring passage across the Lake.” He said in a country drawl. “Fear not you can use my boat, but if you want safe passage across you shouldn’t go alone.” Gesturing to the Lake he continued. “There are many dangers in the depths of the Lake, but I know the way across. If you want passage then answer my riddle and I will escort you.”

Across the ocean you will find,

A land of simple, peaceful folk,

Watched by Her their peace lives on,

But when she leaves illusions are gone.

Where am I?

With the Tricksters already departing, Teams XForce and Brownie Bites decide to depart as well, though with another path. Both had chosen to take the high mountain road through this land. The Brownie Bites took the lead trudging up the path. The road was hard, but the air cooled as they ventured giving relief from the warm air.

Eldrick once again enthusiastic took the lead of his group, quickly moving over rocks and boulders. He whistled a happy tune as he went along. He taken completely by surprise when a mountain lion leapt at him teeth and claws digging into him.

Team XForce was not far behind and saw the commotion ahead. They rushed over but feared they would be too late to help. In an act of sheer bravery Chae ran over to try and help Eldrick. Though he was of a rival team she acted without hesitation rushing the beast, blade drawn. The beast leapt at her in turn, pierced on her blade. Alas the motion carried them both careening. They fell of the cliff both tumbling to their deaths.

Eldrick of the Brownie Bites has died, having his throat ripped out by a Mountain Lion.

Chae, Captain of Team XForce has died after falling of a mountain cliff.

Team XForce has 24 hours to elect a new Captain. Please post it in Blue.

The Lightning Slingers were the last to leave on their path. They had chosen the forest. There may be dangers in all paths, but they felt they had chosen the best. They walked for a time enjoying the breeze carrying a fresh smell through the trees. They very much enjoyed the shaded path. As the day went along they found a calm clearing and decided to stop for a picnic.

** Nikon pondered the riddle as HTC spoke up, after hearing his answer the they agreed that it was their best chance **

The riddle referrs to the Amayar, the peaceful natives on the island of Tremalking. They believed that "reality" was in fact not real, but only a passageway to another existence. When Rand cleansed the taint and the female statue of the Choedan Kal melted, the Amayar interpreted this as the end of the Time of Illusion and committed mass suicide.

The team waited in silence for the riverman's response.

    • Jaimelai! How have you been?
    • I had no idea they had official illustrations until I shared this, so cool!
    • I'm new to DM (and I'm in the Warder's Guild), but I kind of know what you mean.  I finished everything when it came out late January 2013, two or three weeks before the end of an important part of my life, when I was accepted into the University of Edinburgh for a Masters degree 15 February 2013.  As you well know (I'm still processing all you've written--nice to meet you!), I haven't left it since then.   I started reading the WoT when I was 13-14, and once I finished the WoT (at 25), I felt I couldn't go back.  I never met RJ, but my Latin teacher 8th grade was one of his former secretaries, his niece was two grades above me in our high school drama club, and one of my classmates at boarding school my high school senior year was one of his nearby neighbors.  But I was about to leave my former life and go to Scotland.  Sure, the WoT had defined high school and the moments I read the KoD during the lousy months of my Katrina exile that senior year were some of my happiest, but that was that.  I would be an adult, now, I wouldn't talk about it anymore, and I didn't want to think about it.  When I learned about DM (looooooooooooooooong before I reread--or listened to--the series), I didn't join, despite the fact we're all in love with it. Sure, I might make friends if I joined, but the WoT was over--so why prolong the agony? I only decided to join DM when I was halfway though the series last year--I think it was while I was reading a CoT (or thereabouts), and I only started talking to everyone when I was listening to a GS.    In the years after I finished--from January 2013 through December 2017--I would occasionally think of a saying or read something I had written years before and, when looking up the reference, find out that it was a WoT saying or that I had been quoting something in the series!  (Sometimes I found this out because of DM). It could sometimes be weird how much the WoT had been ingrained--I even forgot that Jak o' the Shadows was a WoT poem for some time!  But finally, the wife of one of my closest friends revealed she was a WoT fan and had decided to re-listen to the series.  (She's a seamstress, so she doesn't read, but listens to EVERYTHING).  When she learned I too was a fan, she tried hard and then eventually convinced me to listen to it instead and when I did, I realised I had forgotten quite a few details, if I remembered the general story and I'd swallowed every trope.  Occasionally, it was like jolts would come in as I listened--"So that's where that saying comes from" or "that's why I think that!"       Ending it had helped me define a chapter of my life, sure, from adolescence until my journey to Scotland.  But it turned out that the WoT was even more important to me than I thought it was--it had been a foundation stone for me.  It had helped me define life itself!  What would Mat say if he were me? It's as important to me now as it was ever, and so I'm as part of the WoT's story as much as anyone else.    I hope all I've written makes sense.  But--don't worry.  Finishing it is difficult.  And finishing it might be part of the end of your chapter.  I know I thought I was lost for several months/years afterwards.  But the story and its value will never end.
