Song 17: I Shot The Sheriff

Well, after Direwolf Jon's selection, you are back to Corki! And I am back with two music heavyweights in the form of Reggae star Bob Marley, and Blues-rock legend Eric Clapton.

ORIGINAL: Bob Marley

This is one of many songs that make Bob Marley famous. Easy-going and relaxed, the song depicts the point of view of a man who admits to having killed the local sheriff, but claims to be falsely accused of having killed the deputy sheriff.

vs.

COVER: Eric Clapton

Clapton's version of the song is the most successful cover, peaking at number 1 in the US - this happened to be Clapton's only chart-topping hit in the US.

Song 18: With A Little Help From My Friends

Two British musical superheavyweights clash in the latest round as Joe Cocker takes on The Beatles.

ORIGINAL: The Beatles

The original comes from the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, released in 1967. The song was written for and sung by drummer, Ringo Starr. It is ranked #304 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

vs.

COVER: Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker's version is probably the most famous version, taking it to the top of the UK charts, as have 2 other groups. It is very different to the original, being slower, longer due to an instrumental, in a different key and different chords.

Song 19: Candle In The Wind

Something slightly different for song 19, as it is a cover by the same artist. Admittedly, there is very little difference in the music, but one needs to look into the lyrics, which I have also linked.

ORIGINAL: Sir Elton John

Released in 1973, the song is in honour of Marilyn Monroe, who died 11 years earlier. The song reached number 11 on the UK charts.

vs.

COVER: Sir Elton John

The cover was more succesful than the original, topping the charts in a score of countries. It was released in 1997, in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales. The lyrics were change to suite Diana.

Song 20: Nothing Compares 2 U

The 20th song sees Prince take on Sinéad O'Connor. Please let me know if you struggle with the videos - for some reason, I am.

ORIGINAL: Prince

Released on the self-titled album The Family by The Family, the song was not released as a single and received little recognition.

vs.

COVER: Sinéad O'Connor

O'Connor recorded her version in 1989, but released in 1990. It received massive success worldwide, topping the chart in a host of countries.

Corki, it never occurred to you to spend 30 seconds browsing for another version of the song? ;D

I did listen to another version of Sinéad O'Connor's version and totally forgot about Prince's. Plus I was also monitoring my fantasy football team last night as well.

Song 21: I Don't Know What To Do With Myself

Well, I thought this would have been between Dusty Springfield and The White Stripes, but I found out that the original was by Tommy Hunt. So it is The White Stripes taking on Tommy Hunt with the song I Don't Know What To Do With Myself, a song that has proved popular to cover.

ORIGINAL: Tommy Hunt

The original song was released in 1963 by RnB singer Tommy Hunt. It is a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song.

vs.

COVER: The White Stripes

The White Stripes released their cover in 2003 from their Elephant album. Not as successful as Dusty Springfield's version (which reached number 3 in the UK charts), the White Stripes version charted at number 13 in the UK charts. For those interested, it is Kate Moss in the video, which was directed by Sofia Coppola.

This is quite tough. The original is very 1960s, but I love the atmospheric feel the White Stripes give the song, so it gets the M-G's vote. Maybe I will pass the video onto Northie to take note and lessons!  ;D

Tommy Hunt - Original

I loved his voice, and it fit the song better.  The White Stripes version just irritated me and I didn't like the guy's voice. I haven't heard much from them, so it could just be the song, like Krak said, but I know that song definitely was better in the original version. :D

Song 22: I Am Feeling Good

I am feeling lazy tonight, so a big thanks to Krak for suggestion this song. The song has been covered by a score of people, including the Hoff and the Pussycat Dolls, but Krak suggested the Muse cover, and that is the one I have taken to challenge Gilbert Price's original.

ORIGINAL: Gilbert Price

The song comes from the 1965 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd, and Gilbert Price conquered Broadway as a result! The song was written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.

vs.

COVER: Muse

British alternative rock group Muse are a multi-award winning group. This was Muse's 9th single, released in November 2001 and reached number 24 in the UK charts.
