So these are your best mods or also best players?  Just curious...

Neither exactly. DPR is the best mod and we're all good, but mainly we've just been around long enough to know the ropes.

I think Kivam might be the most concise and logical people I've met over the net.

No idea if he's ever modded a game and he doesn't play anymore.

Before my time around these parts then.

You were here the last time Kiv modded. He did the huge GoT's game that had all the JN peeps in it. Maybe a year and a half ago.

Re-rolling is a problem because once people know that you do it, they won't bother to sign up for your games anymore. What's the point, right? This is a cheap way to get out of modding - you let the roles fall where they may and as a mod, you stay in close contact with someone who may need help. Instead of "leading" them, make sure that they know all of the options that are available to them, and help them learn the role. I never did understand players when they said that they sucked at a certain role - it's likely one that they just don't have experience in. Inevitably players will have favorites, etc., but one of the ways to keep the game exciting is to make sure that everybody is constantly switching roles up. Otherwise, it just turns into a playground where the big kids get the swing set everyday, leading to disinterest and inactivity...

Curious to know your position on rerolling or redistributing specific roles because a certain player is known to be very inactive or even go MIA without notice.

In the most basic setup with power roles you'll see (cop, doc, godfather) losing the cop or doc to inactivity is a huge loss.

If any one role is going to make or break a game, like the Cop role in a basic game, you have some options:

1. If an inexperienced player lands the role, the mod can be active in working with them to learn how to use it. Show 'em the ropes as it were.

2. If several players are inexperienced, consider making the role an x-shot and giving it to multiple players.

3. Or consider Deputy roles.

If you are dealing with a person that you fear isn't going to play (will disappear or only show up sporadically with 'I'm trying to catch up" posts) it is to the game's benefit to not let them play. Sounds harsh, but the bottom line is that they make the game suck - period. The game is absolutely dependent on participation, and there are enough rabid mafia players here (or on other sites) to where you can get a game up and not have to worry about re-rolling.

I remember when I was just a mafia-lad... Seriously, this problem never came up until people started to play three or more games at one time. Also, because this is DM, I think a lot of people sign up to support bonded/divisions etc., but don't actually have any interest in playing.

I don't think a cop or doc breaks the game. I do still think losing it is a big loss though.

Also I absolutely agree with this bit.

I think a lot of people are signing up for games when they shouldn't be. Either because their interest really isn't there or they can't actually commit the time required to fulfill their in game responsibilities. I've also started limiting myself to one game at a time (with extraordinary exceptions for 2) and I think my level of interest if nothing else has gone way up. It makes you more devoted and invested in the game you're in.

how do they ever have a chance to get better then?

potential inactivity seems like an ok reason to reroll important roles to me

being bad at them does not

Agreed. I used to be pretty mediocre at the doc role. The only way I got better was by rolling the doc role again and again until I finally put everything together. When in doubt, I usually err on the side of random, even with new players (as long as I think they're going to commit). I've seen players do very well with power roles in their first games. I think Cult Leader is so swingy that it requires a good scum player for the game to be balanced, but in the future, I'll probably put some sort of failsafe in rather than risk having to reroll. Ultimately, setups should be balanced around roles, not perceived competence. Of course, it does help to make your setups robust. Players will always do things you won't expect and the setup has to be able to work with that.

*shakes fist at Wombat's superior Doc skills*

I'm still bitter.

When I mod I basically try and find ways to make character claims useless but enjoyable (see Smash Bros). The exception was Earthbound, but hardly anyone knew much about the source material anyway.

Smash 2 will be coming up soon. I think I'm 3 away in the Black Tower queue. I've got some more new tricks in mind.

Will people be allowed to post their PM's again?

Lol. I've been debating how to work the roles a little still this time... So maybe. That backfired last time when people did that including the link to their QTs which was an unintended consequence I spaced on when I allowed quoting of PMs.

I think I helped in the last Smash Game. It will be nice to play it this time maybe.

Do the letters "ODN" mean anything to you?
