Try not to tunnel as town. Some strongly applied pressure over a few pages is fine but at a certain point you have to take a step back and let the town digest what's been said. If they don't immediately lynch the guy you know is mafia that's ok. Once you begin to tunnel you've polarized the conversation to a point where people are only reacting to you and that guy you're trying to get lynched. That can be really bad even if you get the guy lynched and he was mafia because you've taken away the town's time to scum hunt. Where normally there would be several strings of conversations and accusations now there is nothing because the entire day was taken up by you and the one big argument.

Less is more. Answer directly, but don't over-explain yourself. The more you say the more words people have to twist around. If they want you to explain what you mean more or if they want more info, they will ask.

Before you sign up for your first game, read trough a finished game. Pay close attention and try to guess trough interactions who is mafia and who isn't. It makes it easier for when you actually start playing yourself; you've already gotten a feel for what the game is and how it's played.

Mafia is Daes'Daemar. Everyone will put a different meaning into your words.

Use mafia wikis to look up roles and such before asking about them. If you still have questions after looking it up, then you can ask on-thread.

Try to avoid using the fact that you're new as an excuse. Try to look information up, or PM the mod if there's something you don't understand. The more you bring up the fact that you're new at the game, the more people will think you're being defensive, and defensiveness comes across as scummy.

Try to avoid saying you're mafia.

In all seriousness, take the advice that is above, but also remember to play as yourself. If you play forcefully, it may come out and then it will be easier to determine if you are mafia or town. If you just play like yourself, people will have a harder time discerning meta.

so... if you can't shut up and you're really bad at deceit you should stay away from mafia then? or... is this peculiar to DM mafia? are other styles more accepting of talking too much? which btw I think helps obscure the deficits in deceit.

These tips are only for beginners. New players tend to want to post a reply to every post. It's best they subdue that urge a bit until they get a feel for the game. I know I thought the game would move much faster then it does when I was new. I wanted to react to everything.

Not to mention, if you are overly verbose and trivial, people will start to skim your posts.

This is the most important piece of advice for new players imo. I read several games before my first game and as a result was ready to jump right in when I started playing. I still made mistakes (like falling for the twofer gambit my first time as cop), but I would have had absolutely no clue how to play if I hadn't read some games first.

I actually think I would go the other way in advising newer players. I think they should be encouraged to give their thoughts and be opinionated. It throws them into the fray much quicker, and gets them used to the terminology and the general reactions you can expect and whatnot. Yes, it might get you lynch a little quicker in the first few games perhaps, but you'll still get a better feel for the chemistry of the game.

I've seen a few too many newer players start out that never really give their opinion on much and play a bit too timid. Not only are they preventing other players from being able to get a read on them, but they're also depriving themselves of the chance to actually play the game more committedly. I'm all for having a variety of playstyles in a game, and not everyone can be as aggressive as me or other types of players, but we've seen a few too many players mimicking the Moggy type style and trying to stay hidden in the shadows.

And I think it's been proven a lot recently that lurking isn't really that great of a strategy

how about some specific things, like terminology, cause I've read a lot of games and there's real basic words and phrases i never understand.

and I try to read that wiki about the roles but none of it makes sense, like...

dumb it down if you have the time and desire to type.

please.

thanks.

Yeah, I never did that, and I so wish I had. I had no idea what I ventured into.

It's a little tough cause there's a pretty large little lexicon for common mafia phrases and terminology

"Bussing" somone denotes that a mafia member is trying to get one of his teammates lynched to try and make himself look good

Whyme=fryme is when someone looks scummy for just asking why they should be lynched, instead of focusing on other scummy candidates, making it seem like they care more about self-preservation than helping town win

"Gambit" is related to bussing, where two mafia members start off the game with plans to go against one another at some point to either cause confusion or to give one townie cred

Speaking of which, townie cred is tossed around a little bit, sure you could probably guess but it stands for town credibility, as in you seem more believable as town

WIFOM= Wine In Front Of Me, an allusion to the famous scene in Princess Bride. It essentially means their can always be another explanation for something, but that explanation can just be useless confusion-building conjecture

"Lurking" is purposefully keeping your post count low so as to try and stay out of the spotlight. Traditionally used by either mafia trying to stay hidden or town power roles trying to avoid a NK

"Flailing" is a bit of a hot button word that is used to describe someone defending themselves erratically, like not making much sense, but is also used as a way to pressure someone

A lot of nicknames and phrases are derived from the roles that they are describing, so they would take far longer to think up. That's all I got for now

ok, see, i learned more in that post than in playing two games and reading a dozen others.

it may seem ridiculous, but those are all things, well, except the WIFOM cause i know the movie well enough, that i did not understand.

thank you.

more when you have time if you;re into it please?

....gambit=strategy, not always a maf one. Masons can do gambits too, and town can sometimes pull one off without a QT

QT = quicktopic, a place where teams can talk to eachother. Usually only mafia has a QT, but sometimes there's a role called Mason where town have one too.
