I am just trying to have fun guys, but read into it all you want I suppose.

Ishy, love, what were you on when you tried to watch it? You didn't like Firefly!? KUH-RAY-Zee.

btw just so it's clear I did like the SG1 series well enough

I just wasn't a regular viewer

SGA was cancelled before I could really give it a chance but it seemed pretty similar to SG1 in style and tone to me so I don't feel like I was missing out on much

Must.... resist.... killing..... blasphemer!

Both SG1 and SGA were superior to SGU. Tbh U was fine on its own, but it was different in style and tone to the originals which made fans angry. Pity the death of SGU has almost certainly signaled the death of the Stargate franchise.... :(

a different style and tone automatically equals bad?

as I said I only watched a few episodes of SGA so aside from story and actors I'm going to assume things were pretty much identical to SG1

SG1/A followed a pretty strict formula from what I remember

the heroes would go through the stargate to a different world inhabited by human aliens

something would go wrong and the aliens would be hostile for some reason or need some sort of help

the SG1 cast would get more or less "stuck" on the planet and have to find a way to fix things

by the end of the episode everything was solved and everyone was friends and they'd just walk back through the stargate to earth

add that formula to all the camp and it's just not that great over a long period of time

it's not BAD but it's not INTERESTING either

in my opinion anyway

I can only take so much of "happily ever after" endings

SGU had everything SG1/A didn't

a story that was going somewhere, quick and interesting character development, action and amazing special effects

and a real sense that what these people were doing mattered somehow

with SG1/A you could always just send another team through the stargate but in SGU it was impossible to get back to the Destiny

if they died that was it mission over

you like your stargate shows and I like mine

that's fine

but don't blame the people behind SGU (most of which originally worked on SGA anyway iirc) for "killing stargate"

it was people that DIDN'T watch that killed it

that and SyFail

personally I believe the fanbase was there but SyFy get giving SGU crappier and crappier timeslots and the mid season break was confusing and they didn't do a good job of advertising when it would be back

SyFy is extremely uncaring and have killed several popular shows including Caprica and Eureka both of which had much larger and regular audiences than SGU iirc

you can argue SGU didn't bring in enough viewers to pay for all the fancy special effects

that's fine I can't say that's wrong

but I think the Caprica and Eureka budgets were much smaller and drew in much bigger audiences and they still got the axe

SyFy has a track record of this sort of thing

take a look at it's current programming

Eureka - science fiction/comedy on it's final season

Being Human - knock off of a BBC supernatural show that's just there to be eyecandy for chicks

Alphas - new "superhero" show but I'll bet in a season or two it'll be gone

Destination Truth - paranormal monster hunters, one of the most watched SyFy programs

Face Off - reality show

Fact or Faked - reality show

Ghost Hunters - paranormal reality show

Ghost Hunters International - paranormal reality show

Haunted Collector - paranormal reality show

Haven - supernatural show currently on it's third season

Hollywood Treasure - reality show

Legend Quest - reality show (cancelled)

Paranormal Witness - paranormal reality show

Sanctuary - supernatural show on it's 4th season, seems to be doing pretty well

Scare Tactics - reality show

Warehouse 13 - supernatural show on it's 4th season, seems to be doing well

WCG Ultimate Gamer - reality gameshow

WWE Smackdown - reality/wrestling

so tell me

where's the science fiction here?

maybe some upcoming shows...

America's Smartest Kids: Reality television series which pits America's smartest kids against each other to "invent a better future".

Change the Day You Die: Reality television series which follows a group of individuals as they are shown how their bad habits will cause their deaths in the future, and follows the journey they must go through to change those bad habits.

Culture Shock With Tommy Lee: Reality television series which follows Tommy Lee as he investigates various secret societies around the world.

Defiance: A Science Fiction series set in the near future on Earth following an alien invasion.

Dinner With Deepak: Reality television series which follows Dr Deepak Chopra as he dines each week with three high profile dinner guests.

Hi Tech Hoaxes: Reality television series which follows a group of hoaxers and pranksters who each week perform hoaxes on unsuspecting people based on requests from viewers.

In the Dark: The series follows the adventures of an amateur ghost hunting team who continually find their efforts frustrated by their own incompetence.

Me and Lee: A down on his luck twenty year old goes into hospital for back surgery, only to meet Lee Major. It doesn't take too long before he is being talked into going back to Lee's lab and becoming a bionic man.

Monster Man: Reality television series which follows Cleve Hall and his family business of making monster and alien props for Hollywood.

Overthunk: Reality television series which follows two teams as they compete against each other to design, build and set off "massive chain-reaction machines".

Stunts Unlimited: Reality television series which takes the viewers behind the scenes and reveals exactly what goes into creating big stunts for Hollywood.

Three Inches: After being struck by lightning Walter Spackman discovers he has developed a super power; the ability to move an object with his mind, but only over a distance of three inches.

Tyler Shields: Reality television series which documents the work life of unconventional photographer Tyler Shields.

So that's...what? 3 non reality shows? only 2 of which are actually science fiction? yeah those'll get cancelled quick if they ever even make it past the pilot episode

SyFy does not care about science fiction

that's the sad truth

any Stargate series is doomed to fail there

they were even going to kill SG1 at season 6 but changed their minds last minute

re: Firefly

I didn't like it when I watched it but ironically I did see Serenity in theaters a few years prior and loved it (even though it didn't make much sense)

annnnnd that's enough scifi talk for me

I feel like we're really starting to veer off from the game so I for one will stop now

Yeah, I think the sci-fi thing is getting a bit distracting. It was good at first, but it gets a bit overblown when we have a full page and then some taken up by it.

Key thing is interesting...

This reminds me of the Poe story called "The Black Cat".

So, game then.

I find Soy's vote weird, personally. Not that I will be taken seriously since it's on me and you all seem to think I'm acting weird *laughs* it's a lovely little catch 22. But he claims he's all caught up and then votes for someone that already has a couple votes ...and on Day one.

I also find it weird that Tress didn't comment on that fact, actually.

I assumed Soy was trying to get the first D1 train going and spur some reactions by his vote on you, Key... and truthfully I found your reaction to his vote on you slightly more intriguing than the vote itself.

But rest assured, he's not forgotten. He's given me less to work with right now.

Caught up? I think you have your games confused... There hasn't been any need to catch up in this game. I put my vote on you because you had the most votes and this game needed to get going.

I find it interesting that Key is getting so much flack merely for asking for a reason for why she's being voted

that's not an overreaction or defensiveness at all IMO

Unvote: Key

I'm going to have to do a full re-read tonight after work. I want to judge Key's reaction for myself (and everyone else's posts) before I make a vote.

Unvote Hoof

Just gonna get rid of the joke votes from before. Also I dont think Key is over reacting either. I do want to look at the people who jumped on what looked like the begining of a train though.

Posted

Unvote. We're now into the game proper.

By itself, Key's reaction to the votes on her is slightly interesting. I interpreted Nol and EP's votes as joke votes, which I think don't really need explanation. The only serious vote on her was Soy's, which was because he wanted to get this game moving along. Then Hoof hops on by saying that Key needs to keep her games straight. It sounds to me like he was stretching to justify putting that third vote on Key after Nol unvoted.

Soy and Hoof are the two that jump out most to me right now.

Posted

Unvote.

Soy doesn't ping so much to me right now, but Hoof does. It does seem like he was stretching for that vote on Key.

Also, Kay seems to be kinda hanging out in the background, but that could just be cus she's new.
