Battle of the Bands - METAL

And now the second category of Week 4. And it is metal. Below are the nominated champions.

The Archers have nominated... METALLICA

Metallica, the name says it all.  Metallica has been at the forefront of hard rock/metal for over 20 years, paving the way for what it has become today.  The band is famous for their fast, heavy riffs that play into melodic interludes and James Hetfields growling vocals and original lyrics.  Kirk Hammet plays dynamic solos ranging from blues/jazz scales in his melodic ones to just plain ripping thee scales out on his fast solos.  The original bassist, Cliff Burton, one of the best Ive heard play in this style, was killed in the late 80's and since then they have had two other bassists.  And of course, everyone knows the controversial drummer, Lars Ulrich, who contibutes to writing both music and lyrics in just about every song.  Their first studio album, Kill 'Em All, was released in 1983 and since then they have released 7 more albums and a slew of live shows on CD.  Their most popular album was their self titled Black Album.  Other notable albums include Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning and Load.  Metallica is also famous for having one of the most amazing live performances (as I have seen them 4 times Ill agree) of any touring act and also sport the loudest sound system ever created.

Now I know that some of you might be saying to yourselves that Metallica is more rock than metal, but when they established themselves, they were the genre metal.  The genre has changed dramatically today and has several different styles, but Metallica fits easily into it.

Fade to Black (Ride the Lightning) - One of my all time favorite songs

Master of Puppets (Master of Puppets) - Another of my all time favorites

- One of the fastest, heaviest songs out there

Nothing Else Matters (Black Album) - Another all time favorite

The Cavalry have nominated... OZZY OSBOURNE

Ironman....Bark at the Moon.....Paranoid.....It's Ozzy.  Nuff said!

The Infantry have nominated... MOTORHEAD

Motörhead are a British heavy metal band formed in 1975 by bassist, singer and songwriter Lemmy, who has remained the sole constant member. Usually a power trio, Motörhead had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, its follow on, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, cemented Motörhead's reputation as one of Britain's foremost heavy metal groups. More recent exposure has included providing wrestler Triple H's entrance music, performing live at WrestleMania events and in 2005 the band received their first Grammy.

Ace of Spades

There you go. There are the 3 nominations. All you now need to do is pick who you want to win (please highlight in some way or another) and go through as the Champion of Metal for the Grand Final! You have until Saturday 31st May 2008 to make your choice!

Wow, who can deny the compelling arguments of the Cavalry?  How can I not vote for the Ozzman himself?  Metallica and Motorhead are both great, but all bow down to the Wizard of Oz!  MAMMA, I'M COMIN HOME!!

Vote: Ozzy Ozbourne!

Yep I agree with Maj, Black Sabbath would make more sense than just Ozzy.

(As to no Iron Maiden, they were considered by more than one Regiment but with each Regiment not knowing who the other Regiments have chosen means looking for someone that'll get accepted.)

This is a tough choice as I also like Metallica but their last album was the biggest load of rubbish and Motorhead have Lemmy  :P so I'm going with Motorhead.

I do enjoy Motorhead....Although they never seemed to get as much recognition in the States as in Europe.  And, I may have voted for Black Sabbath, but not Ozzy alone(Even though I own several albums before and after ;) ).

I must go with Metallica.  I was highly dissapointed with their music post Black album, but after more than a decade in music I guess there comes a time when you must reinvent yourself a bit.  Having grown up listening to Black Sabbath/Ozzy, Metallica, and Motorhead...the one that stands out to me the most has to be Metallica, Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All.

Well... I shoulda pressed for the inventors of the genre.. Steppenwolf.. but nunya youngsters likely recall them coining the phrase "Heavy Metal Thunder". Which they did, but they were more blues/rock actually. Metallica I'll never listen to again (greedy bastiges). Motorhead are what we call here Speed Metal, or were before Lemming got old and slow. Ozzy while with Black Sabbath was the only performer ever to actually put me to sleep at a concert (1972 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix).

But! Tommy, Geezer and Billy Boy were the baddest cats in the land at the time. Zepplin having gone all Edgar Cayce and trez weird. So I have to go with Ozzy ... he did do a crazy evil laugh thing once upon a time. And could put a rock to sleep with his evil, metal, boring but unique monotone delivery.

Well certain people may know my preference for this type of music since I may have mentioned it once or twice...just in passing like. ;)

Now....Metallica are my favourite..but then I also love Ozzy (I grew up near his home city \m/) and motorhead..(who can resist moshing to Ace of Spades?)

I have agonised over this..but, predictably, Metallica has to be my vote.

And Nothing Else Matters!! ;)  8) 8)

Well, there are some good entrants here.  Ill have to say, Ozzy has some good songs, but there live show was actually a disappointment.  And Motorhead has some great songs out there, but as I started playing music because of listening to Metallica and the fact that i have seen them live 4 times and the shows get better everytime, they are getting my vote.

Manny and Mynd...good points....Metallica lost a lot of favor in two instances....first when they went all mainstream metal....second when they steamrolled the prosecution of Napster and many of it's users.  ::)

Specifically I cast my vote on the power of what they once were(A-la pre Black album).  ;)

I agree, Metallica did lose a lot of favor and got a bad name for the Napster incident, and I can see why people think that.  They did it for protection of their music and record sales, which does very well even with sites such as napster available to everyone, and they didnt really need that protection.  But, in the case of about 99% of the music industry, Metallica was also, inadvertantly, helping smaller regional and local bands.  As the music industry is right now, it is practically impossible to make it and be successful as a musician because of the cut-throat way the industry is run.  Bands that get signed to record labels quickly find out that when all is said and done, each member barely make enough to support themselves for the year, and some dont even get that.  A lot of the blame can be placed on music sharing sites such as Napster.  Think about the last time any of you has gone out and bought a CD.  Ill bet it wasnt recently, and Ill bet you havent bought a tenth of what you used to buy before these sharing sites came along.  That is where a lot of bands make their revenues.  During touring, unless you are a huge band that is well established, bands make next to nothing on shows.  This is a major reason why the world will probably never see huge iconic bands again.  The way the industry is run right now, it kills off bands and musicians before they even get established.  So, yes, Metallica did steamroll Napster for their own ends, but believe me, there would be a lot more bands out there standing right beside them if they had to power to do that and still maintain a fan base.  Sharing sites such as Myspace should be the only ones available in my opinion.  The songs available are controlled by the artist, and if you like what you hear, then support them by buying the songs or CDs.  That is the only way the music industry can improve and survive.  Thats my rant about that.

Yeap. I only buy CDs. I very rarely go to filesharing sites. They just don't appeal to me. And throw in the fact I prefer having something material I can hold in my hand. I'm strange like that, but I prefer CDs. Long may the CD live.

Oh, as the one that gets my vote, it is a tough call. I'm more into the symphonic metal side of metal, but my vote goes to Metallica.

this is a tough decision Ozzy does have some damn good songs though in his old age I think he may not have that much left in the tank, so likely not him.

Motorhead are good and to have a song like ace of spades under your name is more than impressive considering that lemmy isn't really a guitar player as such as a melody, they also have one of the wierdest and funniest metal songs I've heard called vibrator.

Metallica has to be one of my favorite bands, however post black album they did suck exceedingly so that doesn't particularly help. Fortunately with their early work they get my vote master of puppets to black album being my favorites.

Metallica

I would like to add some noticeable non-inclusions to the list being iron maiden, especially considering that they are still going strong after so long and with some of the songs in their line-up.

Also Dio would make a good choice and be interchangeable with Ozzy as they both came through Sabbath to have success post sabbath.

And for a more recent band I think someone like spineshank would have been a decent choice. They have a good sound and a good vocalist and good songs, unfortunately they have disbanded damn it.

Well, since Dream Theater didn't make the cut, I actually have to think about this now...

Metallica was great at the beginning, but got a little weak later in their careers.

Ozzy was also great at the beginning, both with Sabbath and in his solo career, but he should have retired years ago and relied on shock tactics to keep his audience awake and interested at live shows.

Motorhead has never really had the popularity they deserve here in the US so I havn't heard all that much of their stuff, but what I have heard I really liked.

I have to go with Motorhead on this one.

I've never like Morothead, although I do think Lemmy's one bad ass mofo.  ;)  I love watching him in interviews.

I can't say I love Metallica either...I was a Megadeth fan.  And the video for One still creeps me out.

My vote goes for the Ozman.

After a staggering 18 votes (do we have a lot of metalheads here??), the standings are as follos:

Metallica - 9

Motorhead - 5

Ozzy Osbourne - 4

And of course, it could all change!

Well, I'm a bit disappointed that there's no Power Metal in here like DragonForce or Stratovarius or something, but hey,  [glow=red,2,300]Ozzy Osbourne[/glow] is definitely my favorite of the nominees, Crazy Train, Bark at the Moon, I am definitely going with him. Metallica has an awesome solo in Fade to Black, but they're too heavy for my taste, I like stuff faster and with more guitars and keyboards...
