Knightmare - History's Greatest Knight (Cage Match)

In the midst of the brightly coloured marquees and delicious aromas that wafted through the redecorated Warder Practice yards, was a grand ring, surrounded by grandstands. In the middle of this mysterious ring, a number of Warders had just finished muttering a long and complex incantation, bringing forth the bravest and greatest knights from another world to compete against each other! Now, in the spirit of the event, the Warders decided that the only way to truly decide which of these great knights truly was the greatest was to ask the assembled people to vote on their favourites, in a series of duels in the classic tournament style.

At some encouragement for some of the more…boisterous knights, the Warders also agreed to let the women (or indeed the men, if it so took their fancy) also choose which knight in each duel they would rather date!

The assembled knights included:

  1. Richard the Lionheart: A brave and noble king of England
  2. William Wallace: Made famous by Braveheart, a freedom fighter and grand knight
  3. Charlemagne: Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the father of modern Europe
  4. Sir William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke: served Henry II, Richard the LionheartJohn, and Henry III - and became the regent of Henry III
  5. Godfrey of Bouillon: Was a leader in the First Crusade, he ruled Jerusalem.
  6. Jean II Le Maingre: renowned for his military skill, defeated the most famous English soldiers in single combat at a tournament.
  7. Bertrand du Guesclin: was a tactical genius, and the best French Knight of his time.
  8. John Hawkwood: was a brilliant mercenary, and expert tactician.
  9. Ulrich von Liechtenstein: was an expert tournament fighter, and a poet.
  10. Jacques Molay: Grand Master of the Templars, a brilliant banker and economist.
  11. El Cid: Spanish national hero, fought on both sides of the wars in Spain
  12. William the Conqueror: Last conqueror of Great Britain
  13.  Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales: The Black Prince, died a year before he was supposed to take the throne. Great swordsman.
  14. Sir Henry Percy: nicknamed Hotspur for his temper, knighted at 13.
  15. Joan of Arc: Pious French Knight, only woman on this list
  16. Alexander Nevsky: Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Vladimir, Russia’s most celebrated military leader.

The first two to duel are.......

Jacques Molay and William Wallace!

Jacques de Molay (1244-1314)

Jacques de Molay was a fairly typical knight, earning his spurs at the age of 21. In celebration, he went on a Crusade to the Holy Land, but unfortunately the Crusades were declining in success and power, and this left him unsatisfied. However, this decision played into his career, as his reputation as a pious knight led to his election as Grand Master of the Templars. He was an able administrator, bringing reforms that made the Templars more business-like, before leading them into banking and economic success. Eventually, his success was his downfall, he backed the wrong claimant to the French throne, and was executed.

Enjoys banking, money and power.

William Wallace (Died 1305)

He is the figure now made very famous by the movie Braveheart. He was a Scottish knight and landowner who was a leading figure in the Scottish Wars for Independence. There are three notable occurrences in his life which are remembered. The first of which is that he was eventually captured and executed in a very brutal manner. He is also remembered for his famous victory in the battle of Stirling Bridge at which his forces were vastly outnumbered. And he is also remembered for his loss a year later at the Battle of Falkirk.

William enjoys fighting for scotland and screaming freedom at random moments..

The two knights size each other up, waiting for the crowd to pitch in their opinions. It wouldn't be a tournament without screaming audience members.

Molay: 0

Wallace: 5

Taking an early lead, Wallace forces Molay back under the force of his blows, egged on by the crowd. This promised to be a short fight.

((I'll change to the next round in about 4 hours if there isn't a significant change of heart in voting... :p)

Wallace moved quickly forward, and slammed Molay with the pommel of his claymore. The Templar went down quickly, knocked unconscious. It wasn't much of a fight.

The next two combatants entered the field:

Alexander Nevsky and El Cid

El Cid

El Cid (1043-1099) was a Castilian knight whose real name was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar. He was called El Cid by the Moors whom he fought against most of his life. The Spanish national hero, however, didn’t aways fight against the Muslim rulers of medieval Spain. Occasionally, he fought for them as well. El Cid’s greatest achievement was capturing the kingdom-city of Valencia (1094) from the Moors. He formally ruled the city in the name of Alfonso VI but he was more or less independent ruler. Shortly after his death, his widow Jimena surrendered Valencia to the Almoravids. He died from natural causes.

Enjoys playing both sides of the field, and sunbathing.

Alexander Nevsky

Alexander Nevsky (c.1220-1263), Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Vladimir is the most celebrated medieval Russian military leader. He assumed the name Nevsky after he defeated the Swedes on the Neva River in 1240 and repulsed the threat of an invasion of Russia from the north. Two years later, he also decisively defeated the Livonian Brothers of the Sword (a branch of the Teutonic Order) and destroyed most of their forces in the Battle of the Ice. But he couldn’t prevent the Mongol invasion of Rus’ from the east. Thanks to his outstanding political skills, however, he managed to gain considerable concessions from the Mongols and make the Mongol yoke less intolerable. After his death in 1263, Alexander Nevsky came to be regarded as the national hero, while the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him for his support to the Church.

Nevsky enjoys skiing, snowboarding and fencing.

The two knights, the only representatives of their countries in this tournament, sized each other up, getting a feel for the moves of the other.
