Ithi's a down right proper tour guide...

It's sad our adventure is coming to an end, our private jet and cindy's milk saucer will be greatly missed   not to mention the great company...

The sky was grey when they arrived at the Old Bailey. The thick covering of clouds making the statue on the top seem dull and uninteresting. It seemed like a rather ordinary ending to such an extraordinary journey.

Was this it? Had they found Excalibur? Had it really been here all this time, hiding in plain sight? Lyon had said that he would meet them if they were successful. Was he here?

The group scanned the crowd surrounding the building, tourists and people bustling to work mainly, and then they saw him. Standing stationary and watching them as the current of city life swirled around him.

He walked towards them unhindered by the busy human traffic, the people melting away from his path without seeming to notice he was there. And then he was among them.

Congratulations are in order I think. You are not the first to share this secret and you will not be the last, but you did well and are now part of a very select group. Excalibur was never lost, it was taken. When it was needed it was passed on. Throughout the ages it has always been there to uphold justice and give strength to those who had pledged to try and make this world a better place – no matter what the cost was to themselves.

He handed over and aged and discoloured piece of paper. Ithi unfolded it to find a newspaper clipping. It was dated January 31st, 1956. On the left hand side was a story about the statue being removed during maintenance to the building, to finally repair some left over bomb damage caused by the blitz. All very interesting but what had that got to do with anything? Then Rhea’s eyes caught another story on the page that made her catch her breath.

In America a 15 year old fifteen-year-old school girl in Montgomery, called Claudette Colvin had refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in compliance with Jim Crow laws, laws in the US South that enforced racial segregation. This was followed by Rosa Parks also refusing to give up her seat, and there had been a boycott of the Montgomery Bus System. Yesterday, the leader of the Boycott’s house had been bombed. His name was Martin Luther King.

They turned to Lyon, astonished and he nodded.

Yes, Martin Luther King was a Bearer of Excalibur and there have been others since. Here and now, Excalibur waits, until such time it is called upon again. And when the call comes it will answer as it has always done

He looked up towards the statue on top of the Old Bailey and their eyes followed his, marvelling at their new found knowledge of the golden sword gleaming in her hand.

As they looked the sun appeared through a break in the clouds, its light hitting the golden blade and causing a sudden blinding glare that made them blink and close their eyes.

When they opened them again the clouds behind the statue now seemed to glow slightly before an image formed of a Castle lost long ago, the sword now being held by that ancient warrior King.

Everything now made sense. Arthur and Camelot and Excalibur were all real and the magic of those days was still alive today wherever people fought and tried to make a difference. And if Arthur was real then … Lyon? Mr Lyon? Merlin?!

They looked down again to where he had been standing, but he was gone.

Back at the old bookshop Merlin pulled the Lever that would remove its presence from this particular place. Everyone knows that mysterious old bookshops can never be found again. He would have to have a quiet word with Mr Pratchett for letting the secret of why that was out of the bag. A moment later it had never been there, in fact it had always been somewhere else, in a different place and street completely.

He put the book about Arthur back in its place next to the Wheel of Time Books and waited to see who would respond to the letters he had just posted.

And I had Rhea, who is brilliant at taking my very vague concepts and finding out all the details and making sure the logic all works. That way I get to just do the easy bits lol

Thank you Rhea
