Hmm favourite books. I would second Feist's Empire and Magician Novels. I also LOVE Stephen Donaldson's Mordant Duology

 

 

It has an interesting take on 'magic'

 

and The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. Very Dark - in fact it tips the whole good/bad - light/dark on its head. Kind of like the Recluse novels but much much more. Here the Darker Power Wielders are truly dangerous, but far more honourable than their Lighter counterparts.

Game Set and Match Trilogy followed by Hook, Line and Sinker - Len Deighton (all spy novels that I used to read over and over, he was one of my fav authors - I always wanted to be a spy...lol)
