HBO has more adult shows. Sure there is some sex and nudity but generally I don't have a problem with it. Deadwood had some sex in the first few episodes... but come on he ran a whorehouse :P It wasn't like every episode had sex.

Yeah the books are less about magic and could fall more into a period piece from our own history books.

Overall I really enjoyed the show. As mentioned above, I think I only cringed (rolled my eyes) during the wedding scene. I also did not like how they portrayed the wedding night. I think they chose a perfect place to end the first show though.

Oh wow. Just...wow. I thought this was very well done, the casting was perfect, the costumes and scenery were perfect, and overall, I think this has some real promise to be truly enthralling.

Yes, the wedding scene made me cringe a little bit, but that is basically what happened in the book.

I can hardly wait for next Sunday now! I love to hate the Lannisters, I really do...

OMG i know Song, totally agree about Joff. i just wanted to reach throught he screen and smack that little self assured smirk right off his face. the little prat!!! and i kept shaking my head at Sansa. really out of all the kids, she's the only one who looks a bit too old for her character. but considering what she has to endure later on in the series, i can see why they didn't use a 13 yr old *nods*

Emp,. i couldn't agree more about where they ended it. perfect cliff hanger and thats the point in the books where i got hooked too  i was honestly to see how smoothly and little actual story they left out. i mean, that was like 12 chapters right?! it flowed really well and i love how they seemlessly cut between Westeros & Pentos as well; it didn't feel jagged at all and meshed even better than in the books.

Overall in my opinion the first episode was good, not great. The Dothraki came across as pretty cheese all around, somewhat worried how people that haven't read the series might react.

Did anyone get the feeling that despite the sex and violence it came cross as slightly too polished? Very interested to see the ratings as the season progresses.

I can definitely understand now why HBO picked up the series. Lots of violence, intrigue, politics, and SEX SEX SEX!!! Ugg on that last point. My big problem with HBO is how some of its shows are basically soft-core porn (ahem, True Blood, Deadwood). I'm no puritan, and I don't mind sex scenes, but to me it is totally unnecessary to the story to depit the sex so graphically on screen, or use such vulgar language so gratuitously. I'd be embarassed to recommend this show to my parents, for example, and I certainly would be embarassed to watch it with anyone except my wife. I turned to my wife at one point, as she was rolling her eyes at yet another gratuitous sex scene, and said "my books aren't like that."

my feelings exactly... I've said it before around these forums, but I am just not a fan of gratuitous sex/ nudity. There were at least two unnecessary breast close-ups. Lol, that sounds so silly, but it does actually bother me a little bit. Why oh why did we have to focus on the Dothraki women being near-naked and having sex, and not on Dany, or Drogo, or the dragon eggs, or Ser Jorah, or what was actually going on!? (I don't remember it ever being explained that that scene was the wedding. If I hadn't read the books I think I would've been way confused as to what was happening.)

BUUUT

love Arya and Jaime as always. Viserys was AWESOME. So creepy, in the best way. Can't wait for Littlefinger, the best villain in the series.

Official is coming today. It doesn't look as strong as I like.

HBO says: no Game of Thrones ratings for you! At least not today, so you can probably hold off on refreshing the site constantly (though we do appreciate the page views, thanks!) or leaving comments or e-mailing me pestering me for the numbers.

The short delay is presumably because HBO isn’t interested in the results for just the 9pm telecast on the primary HBO being published before it can also at least tack on how many people watched any of the additional episodes.

Given the amount spent on the series (not to mention the marketing), it’s hard to blame HBO for wanting to paint the premiere numbers in the best possible light. As a result, you have an extra day to make your own predictions.

Update: Vulture posted the preliminary metered market numbers that’ I’d heard, but not seen, for Game of Thrones 9pm airing on HBO. A 1.6 household rating (about 1.9 million homes, not people, viewers will be higher since more than one person per household can watch). That’s 43% lower than the 2.8 preliminary household rating for the premiere of Boardwalk Empire.

your right Emp, thats not good news at all. one thing i can say, is that even if they end up scrapping it, they've got all the season already filmed correct? so at least they wont be cutting it off in the middle.

you think raitings will increase with next weeks episode, considering Treme is comming back on the air?

The good news, it seems to have faired well internationally...

Game of Thrones scores Sky Atlantic ratings recordAdaptation of George RR Martin's fantasy series launches with average of 743,000 viewers, plus more on Sky+

Game of Thrones: Sky Atlantic, 9pm – Fantasy epic Game of Thrones took the crown as Sky Atlantic's most popular show to date for its launch episode on Monday 18 April.

The big-budget HBO spectacular starring Sean Bean averaged 743,000 viewers between 9pm and 10.10pm, with a peak of 823,000.

It beat the Sky channel's previous highest overnight audience, believed to be the first episode of Martin Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire, which averaged 438,000 on its opening night.

Game of Thrones' audience is likely to be around 50% higher when viewing on timeshifted viewing on Sky+ is taken into account.

The Sky Atlantic show was the fifth most popular digital programme of the night, behind E4's Glee with 1.314 million and a trio of BBC3 shows, including an EastEnders repeat (1.088 million) and a double helping of Family Guy repeats.

Game of Thrones was the most popular subscription digital channel show of the night, however, beating Sky Sports 1's Live Championship Football into second place with 444,000 viewers kicking off at 7.30pm, and Sky 1's The Simpsons repeat in third with 426,000 viewers between 7.30pm and 8pm.

I can not recall one show that HBO has canned mid season. So yes we will at least get a full season out of it. I am willing that even if the ratings are not great we will get a second season. I do not recall Treme numbers but I do not think they are great. Then again GOT is much more expensive to make.

Treme premiered on April 11 to 1.125 million viewers and a 0.4 rating with adults 18-49 for its 10pm telecast. On April 18 it dropped to .777 million viewers and a 0.3 rating with adults 18-49. On Sunday, April 25 it was up slightly to .809 million viewers and again had a 0.3 rating with adults 18-49.

Treme was renewed quite early.. like a few days after the premiere. HBO tends to hold on to those shows the critics love even if the public isn't watching (The Wire).

i've heard alot about Treme, but that could be because i live close to New Orleans also *nods*

wow, almost a 100,000 more people watched on the 10pm slot then and normal time slot of 9pm ... i would have figured the Borgais woudl have eaten into that 10pm slot. i wonder what will happen to the extra veiwers at 10 pm, do you think they will transfer over to the 9pm time slot or just go with Treme (which will be the show on that time slot come next weekand)

I think this is actually pretty good!

The heavily hyped debut of Game of Thrones couldn’t come close to the premiere of HBO’s last big drama series, Boardwalk Empire, yet it still turned in a solid number Sunday night.

The first episode delivered a decent 2.2 million viewers for its premiere airing, then a rather strong 1.2 million for its first encore (the NBA playoff game between the Celtics and Knicks might have pushed some viewership to the second airing), and another 800,000 for the third telecast for an overall healthy total of 4.2 million. HBO then aired Thrones six times across all its channels Monday night, and those numbers will be added to this post later today.

Thrones first telecast was down 54 percent from the premiere of 2010′s Boardwalk (4.8 million) which received an immediate second season renewal. Yet HBO always takes into account what Sunday show was used to ramp up viewers to the new program’s premiere, and Thrones had a weak platform — Mildred Pierce, which averaged around 1 million viewers, a number Thrones more than doubled.

What’s perhaps the closest ratings comparison to a fantasy series like Thrones is HBO’s other genre drama, True Blood. A prestigious crime drama Boardwalk is much more in the traditional HBO viewership wheelhouse. Compared to the vampire show, Thrones did really well. Blood only opened with 1.4 million viewers, and similarly had no real platform to launch from, but then went on to grow week after week into a major hit for the network.

So what does all this mean for Thrones? The premiere number is good, not great. HBO would have loved for the first airing of Thrones to have been in the 3 million range, but will definitely take anything in the 2s. The next question: How many viewers will stick around next week?

All your fears were for naught

Well that was fast. HBO has renewed its fantasy series "Game of Thrones" after airing only one episode which scored 4.2 million viewers over three airings on its first night (click here for more details).

The show’s second season will likely debut next year and be based on George R.R. Martin’s second book in his series "A Clash of Kings".

The renewal was likely considering not just the expense of creating the series, but the potential for international sales and disc sales which are already said to look extremely promising.

Clash of Kings is a more TV friendly book anyways. By that, I mean it is more action oriented with lots of epic battles whereass GoT is more about personal relationships in subterfuge. So Season Two will be even better than Season One, IMHO.

Some details bothered me a bit. The wedding the most, it looked way to choreographed. But also when Jon found Ghost. In the book, Jon claims the pup for himself. Changing that to have Theon, in a quite insulting manner, say it is Jons changes the perception of Jons standing in the family. And, while I am complaining, the music was awfully generic. On the plus side, it was often kept very low, which was a blessing.

I'm sure I could think of a few more things if I really thought about it.

That said, aside from fairly small details like these, I think it did live up to the hype. The sets are gorgeous, the casting seems to have been spot on for almost every single character, and the acting was often superb (for me, Arya impressed the most, especially her facial reactions to what happens around her). And joffrey...he did not have a single line, and yet I wanted to kick him in the face, he really radiates what a wicked little creep he is.
