In the second of the line-ups in week 2 of the knock out stage, we see the Champions of Hip Hop and Metal fight it out for a place in the Quarter Finals.

The champion of Hip Hop... THE BEASTIE BOYS

The Beastie Boys are an American hip hop group from New York City. They started out as a hardcore punk group in 1979, and appeared in the compilation cassette New York Thrash with Riot Fight and Beastie. They switched to hip hop with the release of their debut solo album "Licensed to Ill" (1986), which enjoyed international critical acclaim and commercial success. It was a smash success, and was favorably reviewed by Rolling Stone magazine with the now-famous headline, "Three Idiots Create a Masterpiece". Next two albums "Paul's Boutique" and "Check Your Head" managed to get some attention but not as much as "Licensed to Ill" did. "Ill Communication", released in 1994, saw the Beastie Boys' return to the top of the charts. Released July 14, 1998, "Hello Nasty" clocked first week sales of 698,527 in the U.S. and went straight to #1 in the U.S., the UK, Germany, Australia, The Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden."To The 5 Boroughs" was released worldwide on June 15, 2004. It was the first album the Beastie Boys produced themselves and reached #1 on the Billboard album charts, #2 in the UK and Australia, and #3 in Germany.

The group is well-known for their eclecticism, jocular and flippant attitude toward interviews and interviewers, obscure cultural references and kitschy lyrics, and performing in outlandish matching suits. They are one of the longest-lived hip hop acts and continue to enjoy commercial and critical success in 2008, more than 20 years after the release of their debut album. On September 27, 2007 they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Beastie Boys won two Grammy Awards in 1999, receiving the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album for "Hello Nasty" as well as the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Intergalactic" This was the first, and as of 2008, only time that a band had won awards in both rap and alternative categories.

The champion of Metal... METALLICA

Metallica, the name says it all.  Metallica has been at the forefront of hard rock/metal for over 20 years, paving the way for what it has become today.  The band is famous for their fast, heavy riffs that play into melodic interludes and James Hetfields growling vocals and original lyrics.  Kirk Hammet plays dynamic solos ranging from blues/jazz scales in his melodic ones to just plain ripping thee scales out on his fast solos.  The original bassist, Cliff Burton, one of the best Ive heard play in this style, was killed in the late 80's and since then they have had two other bassists.  And of course, everyone knows the controversial drummer, Lars Ulrich, who contibutes to writing both music and lyrics in just about every song.  Their first studio album, Kill 'Em All, was released in 1983 and since then they have released 7 more albums and a slew of live shows on CD.  Their most popular album was their self titled Black Album.  Other notable albums include Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning and Load.  Metallica is also famous for having one of the most amazing live performances (as I have seen them 4 times Ill agree) of any touring act and also sport the loudest sound system ever created.

Now I know that some of you might be saying to yourselves that Metallica is more rock than metal, but when they established themselves, they were the genre metal.  The genre has changed dramatically today and has several different styles, but Metallica fits easily into it.

Fade to Black (Ride the Lightning) - One of my all time favorite songs

Master of Puppets (Master of Puppets) - Another of my all time favorites

- One of the fastest, heaviest songs out there

Nothing Else Matters (Black Album) - Another all time favorite

There you go - the two champions of Hip Hop and Metal. All you now need to do is pick who you want to win (please highlight in some way or another) and go through to the next stage of the Knock out and one step closer to the Grand Final! You have until Tuesday 15th July 2008 to make your choice!

I grew up listening to both Metallica and Beasti Boys.  In both instances I have stopped listening to them as they have changed styles(Post Black Album and Post Sabotage).  I have lost an irreplaceable amount of respect for Metallica, due to the whole ordeal with the download lawsuits.  Leaving non music discussion out of the mix....Metallica is the main reason I started playing music, and besides Neal Peart of Rush, Lars Ulrich was the drummer who I wanted to be like(Pre Black album).

That being said, I will go with [glow=red,2,300]Metallica[/glow].

Metallica for me.  As I have said before, it is soley the artists discretion on whether their music is allowed to be placed online.  I know that no one else would appreciate spending countless hours writing and recording music just to have someone else take it and put it online for anyone to get for free.

Metallica.. I at least liked them for a while.

Why couldnt one of these messes go up against a Jazz or Blues in an early round. Now one of em is gonna go up against some atrocious Electronica or Dance thing and win that too...
