The Mafia Parable: Basic Game OVER

Nevermind. I asked in here without thinking. It is better to ask in the game thread.

This one, from page 50, Rand. I had asked the same basic question in mafia chat, but then I thought it would look better if I asked in the game thread and made it sound more townie than it did in mafia qt, so I posted the question here, then got distracted with something, then thought that this tab was the mafia qt tab and posted this here, then thought I had just hung myself, but the other wolves said to relax, and they were right. *whew* But the irony was not lost on me, having just (wrongly) hammered Daruya on suspicion of doing that very thing in the last game.

Well, that was painful to watch for more reasons than one.

Good job Ben, btw! How many games have you played and is this your first time as Mafia?

Thank you! This was my third game, my first time as mafia, and my first time to survive D1. I look forward to playing some more.

We have about the same experience only I usually make it near the end of the game and haven't been scum yet.

I suggest trying out a hydra game! Super fun and you have a partner in crime (or in fighting crime :P)

That would be fun; I would like to try a hydra game sometime! And thanks for the props in the spec thread! In my first two games, I didn't do very well, so I was surprised to have lasted in this one, especially after mistakenly posting in here instead of the Mafia QT. When BFG subbed in, she couldn't get QT to work, so we started a new mafia chat in a PM here, and I just got the tabs confused as I was bouncing around, just like I explained to Nynaeve. What is really ironic though, is that in my last game, I tunneled on a townie for getting threads mixed up, and I was sure she meant the game thread and mafia QT, which is exactly what I did in the very next game, but no one caught it.

Hahaha, knowing you were mafia I knew that was exactly what happened :P But you played it off really well and you were lucky most of the town was too busy fighting themselves to really focus on you. I don't think a first time wolf could have asked for a better game to jump into. I only hope when I finally rand wolf I can lay low and watch as the town tears itself to pieces without any influence (would feel less guilty that way).

It helped me feel much more comfortable having either hydra partners or a mentor in the 3 games I've played, I would suggest the latter if you're feeling like you're a little overwhelmed. A mentor mostly just explains why players make the moves they make and what to look for in a villager/wolf. My instincts were spot on my last game and my hydra and I not only vig shot a wolf N1, but then lynched the other two in a row! Felt really good! Here you guys had zero scum lynches, so I'd say that's a clean victory! You were the most active so I have to give you the most credit for putting yourself out there as a wolf!

I will admit I was rooting for Hallia, but after D1 I knew it was over for the villagers. GG

@Darthe Definitely. The optimal thing for scum to do if all vigs reveal is for one to fake claim and keep the town in the dark so to speak. The other option is to let them be proactive and kill them off one by one at night. I think I prefer the latter I would only need to redirect one or convince them to holster one night.

The optimal thing for town is still up in the air. I would(n't) prefer if it all ended in one fell swoop day 2 or night 1/2. lynch someone have the vigs hide and reveal day 2 and shoot or reveal night 1 and have them shoot. I like vanilla games more in general.

Nyn mentored me in the last game, but I only lasted one day, so it wasn't really much of a mentoring session. Leelou helped me out a bit in my first game, but mostly, I learned from the other wolves in this one. They really helped me out a lot.

It sounds like your game went really well! My instincts in my first game weren't that bad, but they were terrible in my second game. I only had to guess vigs in this one, and I wasn't any good at that, but it was still fun. I bet it would be more fun if I kept being right like you were, though.

Any of you who are miss, do you think town getting a 1x bpv would screw this game up? I worry about the impact that Has on an early game mass claim scenario mostly.

I think the set-up is maybe a smidge town-sided tbh (but definitely well within the realm of acceptability for a set-up, and it's mechanically very interesting) so i wouldnt rec that i guess

1x vig is a high variance role, but hard to undersell the potential gain of a villager being able to wipe out 4 people in the PoE before d2 starts. depends how right they are, but that's still very strong, also considering d2 would in a lot of situations begin with 2+ clear villagers (depending on whether or not a mafia fakeclaimed 1x vig)

I apologize for my inactivity and replacement. As I explained to Darthe, I'm working 60 hours in 6 days starting last sunday. Three resignstions, two people on LOA, two vacations.

Agree with Cory - there's really no need. As is, the vig choices become a game within the game, which amps up the tension and potential. IMO, Verb's suggestion would work nicely for D2.

That makes sense, then lol

Good luck with further games, I'm sure I'll see you in one down the road!

I definitely wouldn't give town a bpv. If I changed anything, I'd give scum a 1x roleblock. But that's a hard call to make in the absence of multiple trial runs.  It might be just fine as is.  Vigs are fundamentally neutral and will benefit whichever team is playing better.  I love powers like that because they make the game more interesting without really impacting the pre-rand balance.  As an open set-up though, town do get three ICs to start pending a risky claim from scum.  1x RB would give scum a little more wiggle room to attempt to counter that as they see fit.

I wouldn't give town a bpv in this (open) setup. In a mass day 1 claim situation that allows town to resolve 3 vigs, 1 bpv, 1 lynch, 3 vig shots by start day 2. That's 4 unresolved players which include up to 3 mafia, that basically removes almost all mislynch possibilities. Mafia then have to counterclaim day 1, which is problematic for them as well.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, means a lot.  Sorry I had to drop like that - I hate replacing out, regardless of my role.  I can count on 1 hand the # of times I've replaced out of a game.

gg scum, well done - and thanks Darthe for the game

Then why did you jump down my throat so hard when I suggested it and asked for discussion?  Goofball!

You're you and I gotta start somewhere. Sheesh.

Plus, D1 is too early - waiting a day gives you a decent amount of info to work form. Makes it a good place for scum to look townish and maybe talk some shots into being wasted.
