How does the theme come into play? [My first and only game so far was just called multiball (advanced)mafia.]

If you are mafia do you have to play scummy?

Do you have to do what others on the mafia thread [qt] tell you?

I've gone to the wiki but they don't have all the roles that you seem to have here ie. Silver tongue.

These are all my questions for now. I'm sure more will be forthcoming!

Theme - if there is one - usually comes into play with the characters assigned to each player (which sometimes fit in particularly well with the roles) and scenes the moderator writes.  Sometimes a theme will suggest what kind of setup the moderator will choose - a Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire theme game usually ends up having several factions warring against each other, for instance.

If you are mafia, you do not have to play as scummy.  It is difficult not to for some people, when they have behind the scenes knowledge they may find it difficult to interact normally with others.  Your bet chance of survival as mafia is usually to play as close as possible to how you play as town.

You do not have to do what others on the mafia QT tell you to do.  However, it is a team game, and completely disregarding your teammates suggestions probably won't go over well.

The wiki probably won't have every possible role out there - some are created by individual mods, or known by a different name, or adapted from a role they've seen used before.  Silvertongue is somewhat commonly used here on DM if there is a lie detector, since it's the equivalent of a godfather when there is a cop.  Most commonly used roles will be on the wiki, although there may be variants to the role depending on the mod's preference - some mods will not allow a doctor to self-protect, for instance, or will not let them protect the same target on consecutive nights.  The more games you play - and read, following along with games in progress or reading completed games can be educational - the more roles you'll become familiar with.

Feel free to ask questions, although if anything refers to a game in progress, it's best to ask the moderator privately to avoid any potential impact to the game.  Or if you're in the spectator thread for an ongoing game, there's a good place to ask questions as well since the spectator thread isn't viewable by living players.  (Or shouldn't be *cough*Xthrax*cough*)

The ideal way to play as mafia is to replicate your town game. That's a lot easier said than done, but the end goal ever and always is to fool the village into believing that you're one of them.

People aren't generally going to tell you what to do in mafia QT. They might offer some advice, but QT is going to be far more focused on figuring out town power roles and determining the optimal night kill options.

Theme can be purely for entertainment, or it can factor into role assignment to a degree. Generally speaking, mods will implement checks and balances to avoid situations where the theme makes alignments predictable. Mafia will have a list of unused characters to claim from, and some of these can be main characters, if theme is relevant to begin with.

I wouldn't even know what Silvertongue was if I hadn't read a bunch of old games recently. While anything flies in an advanced game, generally speaking roles like this are unfamiliar because mods almost never use them.

Theme can come into play but is often used as a way to make scenes more engaging rather than a way to affect mechanics.

The goal is to act the same as you do when town. If you try to act different it would give you away which is counter to your goals. Id suggest maybe reading one of the newbie guides floating around.

Youre your own person so, no. You can ignore your teammates or take their advice to your heart's content though in general working with them produces better results.

Some roles are home grown. When and if they come up people will definitely explain them to you. Silver tongue, for example, would basically be what they call a godfather on the wiki, just for a role called lie detector instead of one called cop.

A few new questions:

How do you start off your play in a mafia game...?

I mean like what do you start saying first?

What if your the first poster? Someone has to post first?

I saw a lot of impulse lynches on d1...is that necessarily a good idea?

Up to the person how they start. I like to either do snap reads or to joke around a bit.

Hi, im darthe

Town btw, etc

Stuff like that.

Dont copy folks or it will appear inorganic. You need your own voice, which comes with time and competence.

Yeah, nbd. Just be you. How would you start a conversation irl? Dont overthink it.

Its chaotic neutral, id say.

Your first post should be first, regardless of whether or not you're first.

wildfire  everyone varies   some say hi  some say FIRST! if they get the  first post some dont.  Some dive straight in with reads or comments on the game

Basically post what you want to post. The more natural to you it is the better really

But know that even a simple " sup"     sometimes gets questioned.
