Death Metal is way different than Melodic Death Metal. The latter has more melody infused into it than the generic death metal bands. Bands like Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, Insomnium just blow you away. 

 

I know Megadeth, even been to their live show in India of all places,lol. They are good but when compared to European metal, they are nothing. Iron Maiden > Megadeth :)

 

Any top metal fests in USA will be composed primarily of European metal bands.

Unfortunately I think the good metal movement has kind of came and seen it's day in America... but a lot of those bands (like Megadeth) opened the door for a lot of the stuff we see today.

 

Some of my favorite bands are Metallica, Pantera, Lamb of God, Black Label Society, etc. Pretty much if you can shred on the Axe then I will jam to it
