I don't think DM mafia is dying, I think we allow too many games to play at once.

There are people who play in too many games at once as well.

I used to play in 4+ at a time. Now I do 1 or maybe 2.

I feel better about the games that I play now because I'm better able to give my full attention.

You should try it.

Stop making games that require specific numbers of players and make more games that can accommodate any number.

Just try to be more like DPR, that's what I strive for with most of my games.

Yeah well I'm too new at modding to be able to re-balance a game at the whim of players.

That's an excuse.

Which is fine.

I still have tons of games I'm sitting on that I made when I wasn't as good at modding (not that I am good, just better than before imo) that I intend to run anyway eventually.

But instead of waiting forever like Darthe is you can just sit back and start the game with 8 people or 10 people or 15 people or whatever number.

All you really have to do is scrap all your roles and make everyone mafia or town. Add in a cop or godfather if you want to spice things up.

Boom. Done.

It's all DPR does really.

He just adds a ton of flavor and intricacy to the setup like making you "buy" your extra roles or somesuch and not just handing them out.

That's the stuff that puts him above the rest IMO.

I have tried playing in just one game before Nolder, multiple times. Unless it's a super active game or has a lot of people on my time schedule, it pretty much doesn't move at all when I'm online, so I end up catching up with everything, and then... that's it. Find other stuff to mess around on. I know it sounds like a lame problem, but I usually have hours to kill at night. Why not spend a good chunk of them in catching up in multiple games? Obviously there's a chance of getting reads from diff games mixed up, but I don't personally find that to be too big of a problem. Plus, and I know Dap likes doing this as well (and perhaps a few others), I actually being involved in multiple games with people at the same time, to make it even easier to analyze their meta comparatively.

Also, most new mods, if they're anything like me, probably would like to be able to experiment with diff roles and stuff, to give them a chance to see how they normally play out, or how others might approach the role or something. I know in my case I have no desire to run a standard basic setup, unless I thought of an awesome theme that I would love to write with. I want the chances to use up various roles so that I can see how they interact, hopefully making me a better mod in the future.

And using DPR as an example of a good mod is a bit misleading. There are a number of reasons why DPR is a great mod; experience, popularity, cleverness with theme/design. I don't think simplicity is one of his best traits as a mod. He's just good enough to take a relatively basic setup and spice it up just enough with other tricks to make it entertaining.

Totally off topic, but I really dislike spicing my games in any way that feels gimmicky to me.  The only exception is when I am poking fun of that attribute, as I am doing here with the whole METAL theme.

DPR typically manages to avoid that while staying lighthearted.  Then again, his themes tend to be original.

To be fair, you're one of the few people who I think aren't really effected by playing multiple games.

You don't slow down and your gameplay isn't really effected.

That isn't true for most other people.

I don't think simplicity is one of his best traits as a mod.

I couldn't disagree more.

It takes someone with a lot of conviction not to overload a game with roles.

Let's be honest. Beloved Princess, Doublevoter, Flavor Cop, Governor, Gunsmith, Sensor, Nexus, and Voyeur are all really cool roles.

But you just can't stick them all into the same game and expect it to turn out as anything but a random mish mash of how abilities were used.

Balance is achieved with a less is more attitude.

I can sign up if you don't mind possibly replacing me after the 7th. I get married on the 9th and will be gone for a week after that. I would like to see you get your game going as well.

One last thing.

Since this game has taken a while I am assuming that means that people aren't especially interested in the setup. Thus, I am willing to change it.

If over half of you say you want the following it will be done:

5 vanilla town

3 masons

3 mafia

3 instakills

No night (aka quick game)

If mafia hits a mason the mason dies

If mafia hits a VT the shot rebounds and mafia commits suicide

Pretty intense.

I kind of liked the aspect of having 3 sects. I was actually thinking about this earlier from the perspective of being on the werewolf team. The best way to play would be to act as Town to eliminate the mafia considering that if one of each 3 still exists at game end then the mafia will win. On the other hand, the Seer detects only human or werewolf so that puts a wrench into things.

I'd be happy either way. Would the mafia have a QT to deliberate their kills or would each member have their one singular shot to take when they chose to?

I actually keep meaning to check that myself.

Also, rhe three team one gets interesting when you get to3 town 3 mafia 2 wolves. Town can mislynch but wolves ccan't afford to miss. Depending on how the game goes down one team will eventually be relying on another to help them win.
