Old vs. New Mafia Rules and Playstyle

edit- yeah i'm a total Zelda nerd. during the reception for me and bubba when they introduce us as Mr. & Mrs.'s for the first time we'll be walkign in to the tune of the zelda theme to LttP

 

EPIC. LttP is one of the best games ever, and that music makes for a grand entrance!

For your amusement:

 

The first mafia type game played on DM (or at least the "new" DM that came in 2006)

 

The first mafia (werewolf) game held in Fiddlesticks. Those games later prompted the creation of this board.

 

This thread is when I first introduced the idea to Fiddlesticks.

 

They were known as werewolf games for some time because the forum I got the game idea from called them werewolf games.

 

Then Sirayn modded the first (on DM (?)) game called mafia. Planning mafia 1 and 2.

 

I also modded the Illuminators Murder Mystery game where Kivam and Talya played a great game. Sadly those threads have been lost. At least the Internet Archive has the first page of the two threads: game thread and public thread.

Illuminators Murder Mystery was my first game *blushes* and when I look back at who played, it puts a big smile on my face. I then spent at least two years stuck to the computer playing every game I could find. and thus, the addiction was born.

Maybe you could create an invite only game inviting the older players and selected newer players to get a good mix & match going.

 

Kivam did that with the GoT game, and a lot of peoople got annoyed. I don't mind them, but you have to realize people treat it as a popularity contest, or otherwise a mafia skill evaluation or something.

 

 

I began playing shortly after DPR did, and it had the same effect on me - I joined every game I could find for 2-3 years straight. In the middle of that, Myndjack opened up and I joined games there as well.

 

 

Biggest different for me is Big Game Hunting. Everybody is entitled to having a great game regardless of their "reputation". If it happens a lot, that player gains a rep and becomes Big Game. Then they get killed N1 or N2 all the time.

 

Case in point: Sirayn was lured back for a game a handful of years ago. She was killed by the SK on N1 just for being Big Game. She was scum, too.....on a team with Kivam, DPR, Talya - with me as a symp.

 

It was set to be an awesome game - still was, due to the likes of thedude being awesome......but for me it lost a little bit when Sirayn died so early. It makes people not want to play.

Also on this track, even though this is more of a grievance......is the rep thing. Nobody is as good at this game as they think they are. That is the truth whether people want to admit it or not.

 

Another case in point: brand new player - one of her first games ever. Playing against the Big Games out there. We got owned. She was the Doc, and had one of the most brilliant Doc performances I've seen. Out WIFOMed the mafia multiple times. Her name was Luthine. She, by her play, informed several people that they weren't as good as they thought they were.

speaking of newbs pulling brilliant moves. in the JP game i ran a while back in the Aiel, it was like AH's 1st or 2nd game and random.org picked her to be a power role (i think finder) anyways, point is, she played the role better than some vets i've seen played the role. didn't even fall for the fake claim and played expertly imo; i even gave her extra Ji for it.

 

 

i've seen a few other new players pull brilliant moves and such, but that instance has always stuck in my mind

 

 

re- big game. yeah i don't like using it as a reason to kill/lynch a person either. i use Big Game hunting to a point, but i think its a copp-out to just NK big game for that simple fact. imo its much better (ie: mroe of a challenge and fun) to get them lynched as scum than to NK them. now if you pose a direct threat or the team thinks your a power role or the death is done for strategy thats one thing; but to NK you because you've got a rep for being good at the game, thats being a whimp imo

Sometimes Big Game is town and can be useful if left alive. Why do you feel you need to get rid of them at all? Big Game Hunting is a huge pet peeve of mine. Is it a relatively new thing? I don't know. It's been around ever since I supposedly became Big Game. People, I'm not as good as you think I am.....heh.
