DPR Mafia - The Dark Monocle - Game Thread

In 1870, Jules Verne published Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In his novel, Verne describes a submarine that far exceeded the technology of his, and, to many people’s opinion, any era.

 

In 1895 H.G. Wells published The Time Machine, once again portraying a dream of technology more refined, more powerful, and more imaginative than the general populous was able to truly comprehend.

 

Verne and Wells both serve as examples, among others, of intellects restrained; minds with a vision and a purpose, a desire to see something new created and the means to make it happen. In their novels, they are the searchers, the dreamers, and above all else, the architects of never realized futures.

 

In the waning days of the 19^th century, as the internal combustion engine quickly claimed dominance over the steam engine, there were others that dreamt of these different futures. They did not celebrate the new power that even the clumsy could wield, leaving behind billowing clouds of black smoke and churned earth - there was no beauty in its application, no art in its design.

 

These individuals retired against overwhelming odds to more quiet places where they might at least have their dreams and invent their imagined futures in peace.

 

It is in one of these imagined cities that our adventure takes place.

7. I have a 2 year old. At any point, I might need to go to Monkey Joes, in which case i will post from my phone. These posts will be short. But they might include pictures of 20 foot high bouncey-slides. There are days when I miss being a child...

 

What an odd thing to say, when you now get to experience the joy of sliding down a big blue wobbly slide, whilst seeing your childrens' look of joy and wonder at the same time. If Monkey Joes do not allow Parent's down the Big Blue Slide (or in the ball pools and on the death slide thingumees) you need to change venues immediately.

 

The Big Blue Frog completely allows it, which is fortunate when dealing with a 1 and a 3 year old.

The great mechanical sun sits perched at its mid-morning mark, copper rays surrounding a center of beaten gold. The sun is there to tell the time, but that is not all, for there are much easier ways to accomplish so simple of a task. The sun is also a representation of industrial elegance, of mankind's ability to harness the power of metal and shape it to mimic the heavens themselves. It is a symbol of the life that the good people of New Coronado strive to live, combining culture with functionality, but never at the expense of creative freedom, expression and passion.

 

That passion drives the populace of new Coronado to create even more and wonderful things. Railways criss-cross through the city, running along the sides of buildings where platforms lower and raise with the cranking of massive gears, stopping in time to let passengers on and off before moving on to another level. Airships circle above, zeppelins designed to be sleek and sturdy, and yet fashioned so that those aboard may thrill in the miracle of flight.

And it is all powered through steam. Steam to lift the airships, steam to push the trains and steam to make possible a thousand other dreams as quickly as they are dreamt of; and the people of New Coronado dream often and well.

All but a few.

For those few, there is no dream of beauty - there is no golden age to marvel at. There is only a city to be plundered and a noble populace ripe for deception.

There have always been rumors of such diabolical plots, but never of any substance.

Until now.

Now there is a very visible and very real signal that all is not well. It stands in the form of a robot, an automaton, and though it bears the likeness of the person it was fashioned from, its heart is made of metal and gears, and does not feel passion or kindness. The automaton walks among the city streets, noticed by a few, but not many, and serving no cause for alarm quite yet as no one can realize the full extent of the problem that the people of New Coronado are about to face. But they will, thinks the man that builds the automatons, as he peers through the dark monocle that the robot wears, allowing him to view all that the robot does.

Incidentally, just for my own mental picture, are we talking about a sunglass monocle, a monocle that appears to be dark because of lighting/height of the robot/all the mist steam covers up the light from the sun, or a monocle that has a shadowy and evil origin?
