"Hurin nodded, sweating. Nynaeve felt a stab of pity for the man. He was absolutely devoted to Rand. They had spent a lot of time together, chasing down Fain and the Horne of Valere."

By the power of Google-Fu and Tai-Wiki I declare this question answered!

A pack of playing cards

More specifically, Bridge.

In 1432, Saint Bernardo warned the "Faithful" that cards were invented by the Devil, later picked up by the English Puritans -- often regarded a "The Devil's Picture Book".

These are Mat's observations of Verin looking at him. Studying him as he studies her.

It comes from the chapter "The Death of Tuon" in The Gathering Storm.

So answer: Mat

Wow, nice one Wwomby! Where'd you find that? I've been looking in Chapter 1 CoT cos I was pretty sure it might be there...

I googled. It shows up twice in TPoD.

GJ Ed!

I do have to interject, btw, because incidentally even though both answers to the "Devil's Picture Book" question were partially correct, the truest answer would probably be a tarot deck. It's been established that the modern playing card deck is descended from the Tarot deck, which was originally used as a form of divination and parable-sharing in pagan religions. The Tarot was demonized by the Church immediately upon it's discovery, and they used as evidence such things like the symbol of the pentegram, which in pagan religion was a very sacred symbol relating to nature, yet which the Catholic Church claimed was demonic in nature.

The reason the Church likely tried to focus on the pentegram to try and change public perception of pagan religions more than likely has to do with the Church's relationship with scientific advancement, and specifically organizations such as the Illuminati who supported science over the Church. Scientists like Leonardo Da Vinci used symbols like the pentegram in their scientific research, and thus we have some of the more conclusive research about the golden ratio and it's application to everything around man (the vesuvian man comes to mind, another illustration which depicts a pentegram.

Sorry bout that, rant over.

Go blue!

Hey everyone. I obtained permission from Ithi to do a shameless plug for my mafia game XD So if you'd like to join it's right here in the Black Tower. There are only four spots left, and I'd really like to get the game going for the other players. So get them while they last! It would be much appreciated :)
