Does anyone else feel like this thread should be remade and fleshed out and made into a sticky?

I think it would be good for people to have a place to blow off some steam outside actual games

Posted

I haven't read most of this thread so I could be repeating ideas (or just blabberwock'n), or merely off base with a lot of the problem but here are some thoughts:

DM mafia is way too slow for me. Now, I say that as someone who is a full time student, about to graduate, and is taking high level college classes in preparation for my Masters Degree, and studying for my GRE. I'm Busy. I would STILL want to tear my beard out of my face before sunjecting myself to some of these games and their interminable nothingness. NOTHING HAPPENS! As one of the busy people who plays mafia, I know it can be hard to keep posting. That said, I go out of my way to make at least ONE real post (containing thoughts, ideas, and schemes) per RL day. Beyond that you may get some fluff posts from me if I have extra time, or even more useful posts of I have a lot of time. Make time to contribute, or don't play the game. Also make time to READ THE THREAD before you take the time to post. I would think that was self explanatory... but apparently not. I hate people who tl;dr. Especially when I make one post a day and have a lot to cover in that post. What a waste of my time those people are. If you sign up for a mafia game, commit to playing the game; that includes you time, effort, and reading the thread REGARDLESS of whether there are Wall of Texts, fluff posts, or anything else. I KNOW people have limited time (I'm STILL one of them), but mafia is a time sink. Deal with it in a way that benefits the game, or don't play please.

With the exception of the (relatively) few DM players who are vets, most people don't seem to get that there are more than one way to catch mafia (and they rarely are proponents of logic, unfortunately). although logic doesn't always work either, "facts" in mafia are easily manipulated by the very basis of the game--you don't KNOW what is fact. That's the whole point. People get stuck on certain ideas and fail to think laterally most of the time. (This is why I love playing with Mynd--lateral thinking at it's height, and even if it doesn't produce a good mafia play... it was dang fun to watch)

If the problem is activity, then we need the individual responsibility to say "no" to entering a game. The unexpected will always interupt eventually, and that is fine. We can't help that. But don't sign up for a game that you are not going to be a benefit too.

If the problem is inexperience, then we need more mentor games where a self proclaimed newbie is paired with a more experienced player, and they play the same role/character. this allows them to discuss and plan their play together, possibly giving both players new ideas. This is one of the reasons the the mafia team is likely to win a lot of the time. The mafia team can mentor one another in normal games, as the game goes. The town rarely is in a position to communicate and teach new members how to play as town (doing so in the game thread is perilous, because the new player really should not trust anything you say).. I want to reiterate that--in my mind--it is the new/inexperienced town players who are the most likely the culprits for this phemomenon. If they need the help pair them with someone. maybe make this a facet of newbie games--Requestable mentors. I think it's important that the mentors actually play as the same character as the mentored, because then they can illustrate by performance, not just advice. They would get to see the plan, the process, and the outcome and actually know what was being attempted. When a mentor merely advises, the newer player often ends up feeling lost. or wondering "Great, now how do I do that?!" That is my thought anyways, for the whole half a cent it's worth lol.

Nol i disagree with your stance on talking in a thread once your dead. i dont care if its to just post lol or to carry on a convo, thae fact that living players then have to trudge through that non-game related convo to scum hunt and build cases is initself a distraction from the game. you get one blah post, thats enough. if you want a place to chat, then make a thread outside of the game to do so in.

re-emo melt downs. this i've been very guilty of lately. i dunno if its that i'm just ultra stressed and can't take it any more, or if this is how my play style is evolving. i think its the former, as it only recently started happening when my life got stressful last year. whcih is another reason why i'm taking another break. but i would like to say that sometimes emo meltdowns can be used as a technique to get people off a lynch, regaurdless of alignment. i've also purposefully went emo in a few games and "faked" a melt down to gauge reactions and drum up info and to try and scare peopel off my lynch (which doesn't work btw lmao). so i dunno. i can see both sides to it really.

You're one to talk about trudging through a thread

Your WoTs are one of the most hated things in games

I know some people flat out refuse to read them

Anyway I get what you're saying and while I don't agree I do have a suggestion

Perhaps if more mods made dead threads dead players wouldn't feel the need to post in the game and instead will go to join their fellow deadies

"emo meltdowns" can also be used a valid game play to ferret out reactions as well, some people may disagree but hey it is viable.

I agree it's valid. But I've seen some real ones lately.

I used to have real ones. I may not have said anything on thread, but I was melting down privately. Then I realized this is a game. It's supposed to be fun, and it doesn't matter if you win or lose, live or die. There's always another game. That really helped me.

you know, i can't care less what people say about my WoTs. infact when people complain in game about them normally i take that as a sign that their scum trying to discredit me. and abotu 75% of the time i've been proven right on this.

my WoT's maybe huge (thoguh less so than they have been) but they ARE game related in all cases and HAVE lead to catching scum more times than not. nor are they distracting either; generlaly i always bring up something later in the game with hindsight in context that trips a few scum up. its also my way of taking notes in a game. i find that my notes are better put out there because they get me reactions, which is how i get reads on people. if i keep my notes to myself, then it does no good in scum hunting.

people may hate my WoTs, but there are more people who not only like them, but sometimes rely on them because when i do a re-read and post them i go over the thread with a comb and point out everything i find scummy. it's called scum hunting, maybe if more people tried this type of hunting they'd learn that its much better at snffing out scum than meta; plus it would make the games alot more interesting imo and help reduce inactivity.

re-dead threads. we used to do this. the problem is, if the dead thread is public then the dead scum have access to it and can still cause choas and influence the game thread; and theres the potential for dead players to slip game related info into the thread. i have seen mods making QT dead threads though, and this is a great idea imo.

The games I've been in with a QT dead thread have been great - I especially like the ones where the setup info has been revealed (obviously then the dead players aren't going to be recycled in as replacements). If you die early, it almost makes up for the frustration. It's a ton of fun reading the rest of the game when you know who's who and what the night actions are.

Okay, maybe I'm not THAT bad, but those ones that are over a foot long with 20 quotes in them are just beyond me....

I don't mind WOT's as long as they are completely game play. If you are quoting to chuckle at a post..then consider the rest not read.

I disagree. Red's WoT's are almost all gameplay but they are about such trivial stuff that it's often infuriating. I usually skim them.

^this.

While I enjoy reading Red's wots (when I have ample time), I find myself becoming paranoid about every little thing instead of focusing on the bigger picture.
