Mafia Grievances

This is kinda turning into a back and forth arguementive type thing can we take it back to the mafia topic and maybe instead of just saying wht we dont like about it suggest a way to fix it.

Nothing needs to be fixed. If you don't like what someone is doing in mafia, kill them. If you don't bother to do that, then its your own fault. There doesn't need to be a "way to fix it" because some peopel rely on inactivity and kissing ass to get by in games, what are you going to do? You can't outlaw everyting that people may or may not do to deceive you.... otherwise there's no friggin point.

you say that there is no "way to fix it" but by your own submission stated the obvious way...

My meaning is, there is no way to fix what is being whined about OUTSIDE the context of each individual game. Being polite, inactive, a bully, a jerk, paranoid, suspicious, cryptic... its all behaviors, all ways of playing from one game or one situation to the next. My opinion is, if you don't like or trust the politeness, or paranoia, then kill that person. Don't come up with rules that limit situational play styles in threads like this because it is limiting to the entire mafia game-play experience. If you are in a game, and you don't like what some people are doing, then its up to you to convince the town to do something about it... this is the entire spirit of mafia, being convincing, conniving, strategic and deadly. Sort it out IN the games, not here, not like this...

I understand the problem DM has with people signing up for every game that gets a signup thread, then not staying committed to the games and needing to be replaced. I think if that bothers some people, then those people should sign up for the 12 player or fewer games because it reduces the risk of constant substitutions, and/or only join games with people whose play suits your fancy. Which is why I play most of my games at JetNation.com.

i hate to say this, but the Ape is right.

except about the "get over it" in regaurds to people being overly nice in Mafia here at DM. its a cut throat game, if i wanted a nice "sunshine and rainbows" type of game i'd stick to Candyland

No. I'm not wrong... being overly nice can be just as much a strategy as it is an annoying tendency. Behavior is strategy in mafia, so there's really not much that can be done about it. Every time you play mafia you are empowered with the ability to convince people to "kill" people. If there are players bothering you with their behavior and you haven't made a push to kill them, then its your own damn fault and threads where everyone whines about it are a pathetic way of highlighting that fact that people at DM are too big a bunch of wusses to kill people for the lulz

bah, i'm not talkign about being nice as a play style, you catch more flies with honey than crap. i'm talking about the people who can't handle a playstyle like mine commign after them (either for casing or setting them up to get lynched) and claim i'm perosnally attacking them when it's just me being my assertive, overly competitive agressive self.

if theres no one pissing off another player and trying to get them to emo melt-down on purpose to get them lynched or ruffling their feathers to try and shake somethign loose and get a read on them, then its not a game of Mafia. i keep the GFY rule in my games for a reason, and thats because i'm tired of the "mafia light" atmosphere sunshine and rainbows crap that has started to creep into games here. and i don't care if the person is new to the game, they're told in advance of how rough these games can get. if you're not prepared for your BFF to use your own weakness against you to get you lynched then don't play the game.

i do go a bit easier on fresh newbs, but only just a little; and after the first game, kid gloves are off because then you know what your getting yourself into. going easy on them and giving them a pass because their new doens't allow them to learn from their mistakes and get better; plus it reinforces this "play nice" crap.

point is, there is no playing nice in Mafia. in this game, i'd lynch my own Mother in a heart beat and frame Bubba to save my own skin without thinking twice. i luv you guys dearly and consider you all to be my friends; but in game i'll be damned if i'm gonna loose, its never personal, i don't hold grudges in the game unless someone comes in personally attacking my buddies (like that one cat last year i went off on) it's only Mafia

/rant

I know where you are coming from, but I can say I've used the "I'm just being polite, and so-and-so is personally attacking me" thing to my advantage before. As far as I'm concerned, I don't care what anyone does - because the lame tendencies give me angles to exploit when I play. Everything is up for grabs. If I were a regular DM mafia player, I'd be more pissed about the lack of logic I see here, than the inactivity and courtesy, tbh. lol

I can see where the Ape is coming from with his argument. What happens in the game thread is gameplay - and should be treated as such. Whether people use inactivity (or any other tactic) as a strategy, it happens accidentally or is unplanned doesn't matter. The point is that people will read into everything, regardless of what is intended or truly the case. Regarding the "nice" comment, I think that has a lot to do with the nature of this site. It's PG-13, which means that people have to be careful about what they say. I will admit that I want to come into cyberspace and say a few choice words sometimes when I play, but I restrain myself because I know that I could be punished for saying the wrong words. Like the Ape said, it's a strategy. You can be cutthroat and still follow the PG-13 guideline - it just takes creativity with words.

I agree with the inactivity discussion to a point. Look at what just happened in the Black Tower Mistborn game to see a case where I would argue for Mod intervention relating to the inactivity problem. I won't go into further detail because the game is still running.

Thank you.

Like I said, in-game = everything is up for grabs to be used as strategy. I never approach 2 games the same way, personally. I can flip on and off the arrogant Ape routine whenever I want, can tuck tail and whimper if I need to, all of it. I do it as both town and scum too, keeps people on their toes, and how I do it is all relative to the game I'm in and situation.

Well edited Mr Mynd ... I was just about to call you out for bad form, as my full content email will testify.

I was like omg! Hahahha

So ... None of you grumpys will want to play my sith/jedi game ... Even though I have been on the receiving end of just about all of your attentions and learned some very valuable lessons from it :)

My grievance is that Ape requested -- nay, DEMANDED -- a forum siggy to lead the town to victory in Wes's Steampunk game, but when someone *cough* went to the trouble of making one, he refused to wear it no mater how often the mod demanded it.

I am teh crushed.

This is the one I've been eagerly awaiting. And I've been at the receiving end of your attentions in the steampunk game and learned well from it. (Never mind that what I went through in the steampunk game almost caused me to not only quit that game, but quit the other games I was in at the time.)

i'm so flamming fed up with people using meta as their only reason for trying to lynch a person or as the base of the start of a case. this IS the reason i took a break from mafia earlier this year, and it IS the reason i just dropped all the games i was signed up for and am dropping from playing again.

seriously people, this is sloppy lazy play and WILL bite you in the ass. first i'm getting lynched cause i'm not playign like normla, now i have people attacking me cause i'm playing too much like myself. tell me, WHO ELSE AM I SUPPOSE TO PLAY LIKE THEN?!

using meta as a basis for keeping an eye on a person and gauging whether you need to case them is one hing, using it AS PART OF YOUR CASE is totally another thing! stop being flamming lazy and try actually bringing a real case agaisnt a person for once instead of relying on how they acted in past games. its CALLED a past game for a reason, because they likely had a differnet role, a different alignemtn and were in a DIFFERENT mood when they were playing, or were laying a different style ON PURPOSE. its stupid to use someones game play in one game directly against them or to directly judge them in another game; games are SEPERATE, just because i'm mouthly and spammy in one game as scum doesn't mean every time i'm mouthy and spammy means i'm scum.

just cause i'm quiet and reserved and flip finder in one game, doesn't mean everytime i'm quiet and reserved means i have a power role. you guys rely on Meta liek its a flamming cruch and you've got a severly broken leg and i for one take pleasure in directly seeing meta blow up in the faces of those who rely on it too damned much or push lynches and FoS people souly on meta instead of doing ACTUAL scum hunting and invest the time and effort to actually ANALYZE a persons posts and the content.

if it didn't psis me off to the point were i could chew nails into thumb tacts then i woudl peace. but instead all it does is put me on the defensive. so instead i'm taking my ball and goign home so i don't say a few non-pg 13 sort of things and chew them up one side and down the other

Red, you have gone and let people know your weak spot...and now they are using it against you. You have a very irritating yet effective play style. Others are trying to turn it on you to get you flustered. I'd suggest just ignoring it.

BTW..you meta was off in the Disney game..although I never mentioned it..I did keep it in mind.

You are too good a player, and a fun one to boot, to let weaker players mess with you on the meta thing. Be strong.

tbh peace, i see this as less them tryign to ruffle my feathers and more them using lazy underhanded methods to try and get my lynched because they either cant or are too lazy to go head to head with me with actual case work. so instead, they use Meta as their shield because Meta, unlike an actual case that uses quotes, is not something a person can defend against and only makes the defending person look liek their being defensive (whether its by a response or by ignoring the accusation).

Posted

its another reason why i disagree with meta and using it as the reason to push a case against soemone.

yes we all use meta on eachother, its damn hard not to. but generally you use it to guage wether a person needs to be cased and then pressure them by presenting an actual case. you dont go "oh well your scum cause your acting too much like yourself" you back it up with in game evidence.

imo, using meta like that is more a scum tactic, with the aim of nothign more than to put the other person on the defensive and set up a lynch as a direct result to their reaction. it has NOTHING to do with the current game or how their playing.

its underhanded, vendictive, and imo is playing outside of the spirit of the game. if your too damn lazy to put in the effort to make an actual case against someone then don't sign up and stop wasting other players time.
