favorite quotes:

"You can call me Rand Sedai".

Many others have mentioned it but it is just priceless.

"Did they have to throw around such words that like they were wooden pennies? "

That one made me laugh and was very very Mat.

least favorite: I really dislike how the reveal of Asmodean's killer was handled. I never cared about the issue (dead is dead) and never understood the fascination of so many with it, but if you are going to bother with this, give us more than just the name.

Simply getting the name without any motivation or explanation was supremely unsatisfying. as it is any other random name could have worked just as well.

Demandred killed Asmodean. no Sammael killed Asmodean. no Semihrage killed Asmodean. no Mesaana killed Asmodean. one is just as good as the other if all we get is the name.

Perrin growled and strode into the trees. One of the camp's few children, perhaps? Ahead was a large oak tree; the trunk thick and wide enough to hide someone. Once he grew close, he hesitated. Was this some kind of trap? He laid his hand on his hammer and inched forward. The tree was downwind, and he couldn't catch the scent of-

A hand suddenly jutted out from behind the trunk, holding a brown sack. "I caught a badger," a familiar voice said, "Want to let it go on the village green?"

As soon as Matt figured out how to get out of the tower I absolutely knew before ever reading it that he was going to tip his hat to them before going through the doorway.

Watching Cadsuane slowly but surely come around or come down as it were to Rand was satisfying.

Calling him by name now, letting Rand know she will have that gateway ready, sharing a slight smile with Min after they both called him a blasted fool on their way to the meeting with the Borderlanders and of course admitting that she's proud of him later in the same chapter during her POV.

Of course I always insanely enjoy any scene with Talmanes in it...."Actually. We just rid the city of a murderer, who has taken at last count, nearly a dozen of her citizens. We're entitled to combat pay I surmise." ...and he said it with a completely straight face....Bless the man.

I'm not sure I ever laughed harder than I did reading the chapter "Legends" in tGS.

Perrin being "Fond of the horse." cracked me up pretty good too and Nynaeve finally receiving Lan's bond was also very satisfying.

Go back and read the chapter near the beginning with Moridin... I was halfway through the book and was like "whats going on with the no Asmo reveal?" and I went back. When he's berating Graendal about her getting Aran'gar killed he says that shes making a habit out of killing forsaken and says that this time it wasn't a traitor she killed (meaning she killed Asmo in service to the DO, but this time she had to actually explain herself).

I was extremely bummed though that they revealed this in such an offhand way... we have no PoV that explains why or how she killed him which especially bugs me because it doesn't explain why the DO can't or won't bring him back (mindtraps work wonders).

I've seen a theory that Taim is Asmodean 2.0. That could explain the lack of focus on his death and/or killer. Then again, I'm not sure about the timelines, if they'd fit with this theory (As in, was Taim introduced before Asmodean died? If so, I guess there's still the possibility that one of the Forsaken snatched the original Taim and stuck Asmodean in his body.)

My favorite Moments and Quotes... I made a nice list here, but power went out and it all was wiped x_x And I can't be bothered to do the listing again.

All of them are pretty much mentioned in this thread anyhow.

Only one I'll mention now is the Rand meets Tam scene. It was one of the most beautiful scenes in the whole series. Loved it. It was so beautiful and fitting.

I'm with you for the first part, as in I never really cared who killed Asmo that much. It was going to happen and everyone knew it, just a matter of time and who got to him first.

I thought the actual reveal was treated properly though. It was a very small, almost irrelevant piece of info that had very little to do with any plots or advancing the story.

Anyone who thought it was going to be treated with some kind of extra pizazz obviously hadn't heard most of RJ's interviews on the subject.

RJ was sick of hearing about it and was actually shocked that it was discussed so heavily.

I think the only subject that made him more pissy was the Demandred/Taim every other question crap heh.

-Perrin's battle with Slayer, was one of the most exciting fights in the series and Hopper's death was heartbreaking :(

-Mat hearing all the stories and rumors about his awesomeness. Getting the renown he deserves! And when people recognize him and are filled with awe.

-Mat's battle with the gholam, but especially the lead up to the fight. Casually strolling down the street with the Redarms jumping out of the shadows from time to time.

-Perrin and Faile's "make-up". She is actually good for him again!

Might seem an odd choice, but I quite liked the Alliandre POV. Wasn't expecting it at all, and kind of fun to suddenly get a new window on a minor character (the same could be the said of the Olver POV). I spent most of it convinced Alliandre was going to turn out to be a Darkfriend, but it turns out she's just a fairly normal person who, while having survived dealings with Masema and the Shaido, is also a bit nosy, likes some gossip, and can't bring herself to waste a nice shirt.

Plus a dazed Galad and Berelain both foisting their teacups onto the queen of Ghealdan made me smile

A lot of my favorite scenes have been mentioned, but I don't think this one has. If it has, y'all have my permission to print it out, roll it up, and thwap me over the head with it.

I loved Verin's recounting to Mat of how his ta'veren pull screwed with her plans to get to Tar Valon. Every time she tried to open a gateway, some hilarious and totally improbable event interrupted her. It got almost farcical after a certain point.

And for another Verin quote that I think was great: "By the way, your dress you are wearing is green," followed by Egwene's penny finally dropping and the mendacious little Brown just smiling like somebody's favorite granny and adding, "Yes, I thought that might get your attention."

Classic. :D

Heeey, now. I said you could thwap me if the scene had already been mentioned. If it hasn't been, then you can't thwap me. ;) At least, that's my excuse, and I'm standing by it.

Ahem. Now, to make a book-specific contribution:

Just about anything Rand Sedai did or said. It's about time he came into his own.

Teslyn's thanks to Mat for rescuing her, and her frankness. It was refreshing.

Morgase pouring tea. Something about the care she took with the job - the former Queen of Andor, learning what it's like to be on the other end of the teapot - and the half wry, half tart tone of her mental observations made me laugh.

Oh, and I liked the final scene with Androl and Pevara. There's been a lot of resistance, particularly on the Aes Sedai side, to actually *allying* with the Asha'man. Ignoring their existence, yes. Trying to leash them and tame them, yes. But listening to them and working with them? Accepting that saidin is cleansed and men who channel no longer have to be treated like rabid dogs? Even the ones who bonded the 'renegade' Asha'man around Rand have kept them in a subservient position. The exception to that might be Flinn's relationship with Corele. Maybe. The bonded Aes Sedai, on the other hand, are definitely hostages and not equal partners.

Androl's move, Pevara's agreement to hear him out, Pevara's relative reasonableness, and their mutual need for help all combine to give me hope that we're about to see some real cooperation for once. Maybe. Is it too much to hope? :P

its hard to pick out favourite quotes/moments, as this book seemed to be a non stop series of awesome moments. but i'll try.

the cream of the crop has to be anything involving rand, perrin and mat.

the reunion with tam had me, like every other person reading it worldwide, teary. i actually got that massive lump in my throat. rand with egwene - legendary. two full circles shielding him, and egwene, the amyrlin seat admitting that "he could have broken that shield without a struggle." badass or what??

perrin in TAR. egwene tried tying him up, and "he looked down, amused." who da boss in TAR? its not aes sedai territory, it belongs to the wolf! perrin charging down the hill to save galad. arganda's and galad's recognition of the skill of two rivers bowmen, "archers to dream of." call me crazy but when i think of them, i think of english longbowmen. perring forging his warhammer, and the naming. the first power wrought weapon in Ages, and the dragon reborn is nowhere to be seen!

mat, just being mat. boots, badgers, his interactions with birgitte, thom, snakes and foxes, and perrin. too many one liners from him to dig outta the book, i'd be flicking through it forever to find quotes!

on an aside, elaida's presentation as a damane was particularly satisfying. never could stand her. b!tch!

hats off to BS - its always worrying when a new author continues the work of the deceased, but he's been brilliant!

Don't know if anyone's put this down already, but:

"Have a grand bloody day. " -Mat to the 'Finns.

And I think someone asked for this earlier:

"Your Royal Bloody Pain In My Back,

We're bloody waiting here to talk to you, and we're getting angry perturbed. (That means angry.) Thom says you're a queen now, but I figure that changes nothing, sense you acted like a queen all the time anyways. Don't forget that I carried halled your pretty little backside out of a hole in Tear, but you acted like a queen then, so I guess I dont know why I am surprised now that you act like one when you really are queen. So I'm thinking i should treat you like a bloody queen and all, speaking with high talk and getting your attention. i even used my ring as a signet, like it was paper proper. So here is my formal salutations. SO BLOODY STOP TURNING ME AWAY so we can talk. I need your bellfounders. It's bloody important.

p.s. Salutations means greeting.

p.p.s. Don't mind the scratched out words and bad spellings. I was going to rewrite this letter but Thom is laffing so hard that I want to be done.

p.p.p.s. Don't mind me calling your backside pretty. I hardly ever spent any time looking at it, as I have had an awareness that you'd pull my eyes out if you saw me. Besides, I'm married now,so that doesnt matter now.

---Mat"

This was taken from an email someone sent to me, so it may not be entirely accurate.

Mat caring for Olver is always lovely, although not TofM specific.

Boundless at the end, I was crying like a baby. I found the fact that it was a choice all along very moving. The fact that he chose the "undesirable" life as a wolf, to be free from his tragic human life just really touched me. I know it's not a big moment, but like Hopper, his wolf name is after his dream, for freedom, also similar to Hopper. Duty is heavier than a mountain, death lighter than a feather. It's a common theme in WoT and I think the scene deserves more credit!

Rand and Cadsuane talking civilly made me let out a huge sigh of relief. "Rand Sedai" made me quite happy because I've wanted for ages for men to be allowed back in the White Tower! I can hope for the next book. :)

Even though I hated the scenes, sinister suspicions in the Black Tower and red Aiel were fantastic scenes. They were so scary, they deserve more credit!!

-- "Actually," Talmanes said, clearing his trhoat, "we just rid the city of a murderer who has taken, at last count, nearly a dozen of her citizens. We're entitled to combat pay, I surmise." He said it with a completely straight face. Bless the man. --

-- Don't mind me calling your backside pretty. I hardly ever spent any time looking at it, as I have had an awareness that you'd pull my eyes out if you saw me. Besides, I'm married now,so that doesnt matter now. -- Mat

-- He did not think about her for him to kiss. Maybe for Talmanes. He was so stiff, a good kiss and a cuddle would do him good. --

--... He was a married man, and could not afford to charm her, but he could keep an eye out for his friends. Thom might like her. A girl might make him stop moping about so much, at least. --

--... She had short golden hair and nice eyes; Mat noticed those purely for Thom's sake. She had a full bosom, anyway, and lately Mat had a mind for woman who were more slender through the chest. --

-- Anyway, dicing with a woman was never fair, since one of his smiles could set their hearts fluttering and they would get all weak in the knees. --

and many, many more.

This one made me smile:

Elayne: I see we have much to catch up on

Galad took that as a request - he could be quite literal - and began explaining how he'd come by his station. He was quite detailed about it, and Elayne occasionally glanced at her mother. Morgase's expression was inscrutable.

I love Galad being a dweeb, and I love that his stepmother recognises it but is loyal enough to tolerantly sit through it without saying a word, which means Elayne has to as well without the complaining she once would have done. Families = loving people for all their faults, after all!

Perrin forging the Hammer. There was a whole lot of awesome in this book but that was just epically, mindbogglingly cool. With heap of tobasco sauce on top.

Also, when the young nobleman was talking to Lan in Arafel - "I mean to ride alone" "Of course. It is my intention to ride alone with you." Class

  • 2 months later...

and I did love the BOOTS :D and the way Setalle tried to read more into it than there was.

You really thought Setalle was reading into it too much? I thought she hit the nail on the head. Matt prefers a free life with minimal responsibilities hence the Farmer with 3 pairs of Boots compared to Talmanes with 40 pairs.

But I don't think that this description of Matts character is true. I mean its not the responsibilities of nobles that gave him his dislike of nobles in the first place, but their extravogence and aloofness (his run in with Berelain in the Stone of Tear in Shadow Rising for example). Although this is probably a note to place in the Matt thread so I will leave it there and finish by saying that I did think it was a funny chapter and it had me roflin' for a good few minutes :D

I don't think Setelle was reading too much into it, but I do think she was reading the wrong thing into it.

Mat's story isn't a metaphor for being unwilling to take on the responsibilities of leadership. It is pure populist revulsion.

Good way of putting it. Over the years I've become disgusted with a great many aspects of randland. The environment in general promotes slavery, it's just that some use other words. The seanchen say property, Elayne says "subjects" AS say "Warders." or "Novices," or "Children." In the AoL in rands spires memories stood the populace in line and sorted them.

It is fundamentally oppressive in almost every case, and the only one in the entire series (except maybe nynaeve since marrying Lan, and Rand now that he's on his apology tour) that rejects posession (other than marriage) is Matt. Matt has freed more people from capture than anyone else.

Ituralde (one of my favourite characters) - one of the "Great Captains actually displaying WHY they have that title, Byrne and Bashere just seem to as Eg and Rand tell them without any (that I remember) opportunities to display their presumed strategic and tactical skills. Jagad better make himself useful at some point too....
