What Happens when an Age ends?

the Second Age was known as the Age of Legends, and the third Age known as the Age of Prophecy.

but is there a defining moment when an age ends, and a new one begins? Or does it jjust merge, like say, a millennium for us?

Usually, I'd imagine after a few decades or even centuries people would pinpoint a moment the last Age ended, depending on the events at the time. With this age though, I'd think the moment it was confirmed the DO was sealed away the Fourth Age would be declared to have begun.

I agree. It is up to the following age to decide what the marker is for separating one age from another. The AoL ended with the sealing and the third age began with the breaking, (though the people who were alive at the time didn't realize it), they just knew that all hell was breaking loose.

Yeah, I think that an age is more something  "Historical" not an actual event. Like for example, our own ages. the Golden age of Rome ended, and the Dark ages began. Ideally, this happened at the end of the roman empire, but there was no actual date where people said, "Oh, last tuesday the age ended", its more like, contemporary historians write a few decades later, "thats when the age ended, this approx. year)

Having said that, I also agree that this age will be a bit different. It DOES have a clear climax/end point, and so it will kinda be the day after the DO is sealed, 4th age begins.

As previously said, an end is more historical, such as the Eastern Rome Empire was Rome to its inhabitants not the Byzatine Empire.  Really? will this age be any different, will it end wnen the DO is sealed or whatever or will it be when the blight is cleared of life

People, people. Potty-mouths!

There seems to be a transitory period between Ages, like a bridge--the Breaking, for instance, is considered to be in neither the Age of Legends nor the Third Age.

the Second Age was known as the Age of Legends, and the third Age known as the Age of Prophecy.

Did you coin that name for the Third Age, or is it from an RJ/Team Jordan comment?

Wrong......the Age of Legends was the last third age.....

The Second Age was Hawkwing's empire, and the first age was just after the breaking.,,...,

There are 3 ages spokes on the wheel.....the first begins the first age, the seconds begins the secong age and the third begins the third....when the first age comes again, the world is broken for the next turning.....the world always breaks....the instrument of the breaking is different each time.

I'm very sorry Dagon Thyne, but that is entirely wrong. There are Seven Ages. The time of the Ten Nations (just after the breaking), the Free Years (the time between the Trolloc Wars and Hawkwing) and the New Era (the modern times) are all the Third Age, and the Age of Legends are indeed the Second Age.

Do we know anything about the first age?

Portal Stones are from the First Age, and the Horn was around during that point. It was probably our age, and at some point after a nuclear war that devastated the population channeling was found. Thus why its called the First Age; the first age to experience magic.

At least thats how I see it :p Pure speculation of course.

RJ said once that the appearence of channeling  was the end of the First Age. There are also stories 'from the Age before the Age of Legends' which are clearly from our age.

My pet theory has always been that the appearence of channeling involved a cataclysmic war. The devastation would explain the lack of any features from our world in the Age of Legends, the single language and cultural base would form as the survivors struggled together to survive in the aftermath, and that would lead to the sort of 'service to society' type of society that the Age of Legends had. Most of all it would explain the Horn (a device of war), the Portal Stones (an attempt to flee a devestated world), the coming of the Ogier (aliens willing to help, and with the power to help heal a devestated world). It also explains why the Aes Sedai would swear themselves to serve all, and be served in turn by those sworn against violence (as raparation for their roll in the war).

I like luckers's pet theory  ;D

just a quick question, probably the wrong thread for this question

My memory is hazy but don't we see bits and pieces from the fourth age in the beginning and end of some books?

I could be mistaken and won't be angry at anybody for calling me an idiot if i miss read  :P

How long was the age of legends?  This age will be about 3000 years right.  I wonder if that is the standard.

I doubt it. War had been forgotten in the Age of Legends except for a few scholars and so forth, and if you go by the most accepted theory that the first age is ours, that probably means a long time must have gone by in order for something like that to be forgotten.

No, they're there, but they seem to be derived from events in the current Age.

BTW, aren't Calian and Shivan involved with this somehow?

Supposedly Calian and Shivan are "Heralds of a new age". Wether that means their birth signals a new age, or they do something that signals a new age is unclear, but you are right, they got somthing to do with it.
