Pet peeves when playing mafia?

Ahhhh, games with 20 players or more. Very tough to mod.

When I do these, and I love big games, I have gotten in the habit of doing the following:

I announce the start and end dates - This lets people know how long they have to concentrate for and they can start planning excuses to tell family and friends. I've found that a three week game is the most exciting.

I plan alot of ways to kill people. You got to keep the game moving.

I like extra "activities" that all players can engage in. The Suras games had a bunch of thief plays, moral dilemmas, call and response plays, duesl, and other stuff. This helps when you hit those long patches of inactivity.

It's up to the mod to keep everything going, so you got to have stuff in your arsenal!

The worst is player inactivity and having to modkill.

It WAS a tad transparent, wasn't it? *giggle* Still, I meant every word about Pete. The ones about Kivam, not so much.  ;)

Kiv, it's a long game, but here's the link.

This is the summary I wrote in another game, explaining why I thought the use of the key phrase was a bad idea. The one thing I didn't mention below is that we recruited Pete mid-game.

In Rey's game, Ed was the Lie Detector. Pete figured that out and came up with the phrase "I am not anti-town" and had each of us say it. I was Godfather, not so eager to comply. Long story short, I sacrificed myself to take attention off my team, and to smoke out the finder, by counter claiming lie detector. We lost me, were able to kill the lie detector AND the finder, and go on to win the game. THAT, my friend, is the Twofer gambit we are all so proud of! Granted, Ed was recruited by the cult, and ultimately killed by the vig, but we still count the gambit a success. Anybody who felt like you do and didn't want to say it, we did our best to get them lynched. There are other reasons besides being scum to not want to say something like that, and we took advantage of every single one of them. And this is why I am so against that phrase being allowed to be used by a lie detector. Not because of what it cost me, but because of the lengths we were able to take advantage of it, and keep the attention on it, and off of our scum team.

The best part of the game was watching the LD and the finder go at each other, trying to get each other lynched, firmly believing the other was scum, because they were innocent. One of our team had the framer ability, and we had framed Ed, so the finder really believed he was trying to lynch scum. We laughed our butts off at that one. Unfortunately, you won't see much on thread, because most of the fun was behind the scenes. I admit, I never would have gotten so creative if we hadn't been pushed into a corner by the stupid phrase. It's all their fault. Really.  ;D

I'm glad I was a part of that even if I was the one who ended up with egg on his face.  I will get you back :-* >:D

You are certainly welcome to try. I'd enjoy the challenge. It was this game where I first realized what a really good player you are. I've been watching you ever since. You're on my list of players to watch.

Although, I have to admit, my goal is to pull the wool over Wes' eyes. Strange goal, considering we've never actually played a game together, but to me, he's the one to beat.

just to toot my own horn lol, my proudest moment was in the BT christmas game.

I came in as a replacement scum recruiter, almost got lynched twice, pulled off a false miller claim, recruited the finder, threw a teammate under the bus, and still won the game.

It was the happiest day of my life

Lily I have my eyes on you. I tip my hat you to, you got me for a while.

Now as you puzzle on what on Earth that is to...

One of my biggest pet peeves is day three or four and later when people say 'they have no suspicions' THAT IS SUCH BULL. I mean really?! Really?!? If anything I am just equally suspicious of EVERYONE. By that point in the game enough has happened where you should be suspicious of way more people than there is mafia.

It aggravates me to no end. You ask for their opinion so they can help out and they said o' I'll reread but then the next post is the same stuff. UGH, it lumps right in with player inactivity. UGH, I wish I could Mod kill, player petition the Mod to Mod kill, someone who does that.

Sometimes that is a strategy. I often have a suspicion or six, but don't want to tip the person off. It comes from being finder in my first game. I didn't want anyone to know I was finder, and I didn't want anyone to know who I was going to view. I managed to get the first scum lynched without revealing, so didn't have to until the second scum was found. I just developed the habit of keeping my cards close to my vest, and then my ridiculously long run as mafia last fall added to it. I am VERY uncomfortable sharing most of what I'm thinking, and only share some. I won't be changing.

Also, if you are referring to an ongoing game, please don't. I have things to say to you after the game, and I'm doing the courtesy of waiting. Please give me the same courtesy.

The thing is, if you are town and don't voice suspicions before you die, they can't be debunked or proven. Therefore, witholding doesn't help the town. This is why some of us ask and ask and get frustrated when people do that.

Of course, people used to try to go back and check the dead player's suspicions and hunches more often to see if there was something there or not- back in the day. Heh.

I don't see that kind of townie teamwork anymore, which may explain why the mafia wins more often than the town these days. Still, you have a point. I'll consider it.

Eh, mafia has always won more often than the town because they are able to hide in the shadows. It is why being mafia is easy. Town has it harder, they have no one they can trust, even as lovers who must protect each other. Tis why we must overcome some of our paranoia and share with each other. Continue being suspicious, but also strive together for that town win. ;)

I took your advice and laid my thoughts out there. We'll see how it turns out. And I should probably shut up now - ongoing game and all.

Okay, here's another thing - why are all the games on DM these days 20 players or more? I feel like people have gotten it into their heads that small games aren't as fun which, for me anyway, isn't true. I prefer modding and playing in games with less than 20 players. It probably also explains why only about 2 or 3 games are being played right now, while about 6 or 7 are in signup phases. And some of those have been in signup phases for a while.

I'm right there with you, Alanna. Too many large games makes sure that nobody can start a smaller game. I'd like to see some mini-mafias going. Those are supposed to be fast-paced and loads of fun. I played Red Mini-Matrix and had a blast.

I'm going to go see what mini-mafia is all about. I think I could maybe throw one together to hold off the withdrawls.....lol

Staving off withdrawal isexactly whu the Vampire Hunter games were created. They run for exactly 1 week with no pause, no night, and no mercy.

I've done 4 of them - they ought to be easy to search up. They're a blast.

I think I'm getting jaded. I've had a hard time being enthusiastic about a lot of the games I've been in lately, and not because they were bad games. They were well set-up, well-run, and well-played.

I'm playing one on another site right now, and I just wanted to come here and say how much I appreciate all of you! We have an awesome group of players here who really play well, for the most part. And, even more importantly, treat each other with respect. Any one of the games I didn't like so much here is 1000% percent better than that other site. You guys are awesome!

And I'm all emotional again, aren't I? Stupid meds. Stupid disease... (Which is another reason I love you guys. I can be open about my health here and feel safe about it.)
