In my mind the issue is some players feel they must read and respond to every post, and suffer time constraints when other players spam; they are compelled to understand what is going on in the thread before engaging in the game, that if they don't catch up then they are missing out and cannot properly contribute.

First, and perhaps this is just me, but not everyone needs to read the entire or even a majority of the thread. Furthermore, if we had a way to focus attention on key posts that build up the thread - posts that become talking points later on or posts that are just very well thought out and explain some concept or player meta - then those who feel compelled to understand the flow of the thread can read these highlighted posts and be reasonably assured they know what's going on afterward.

This method makes a thread more accessible, and I think it would largely solve the problem without much effort if it was not misused. It's just a matter of finding and fine tuning a system that satisfies everyone's needs.

I have noticed that there are times when someone asks what's going on, and the question is responded to a "go read and see". While it's important to get your own opinion of what's going on, you don't need to read the whole thread to get one, especially if you are already behind.

And people shouldn't be required to read the whole thread anyway. This is a team game, and you should support your team. Sure, you don't know if the person is on your team or not, but helping someone get caught up by covering what has happened helps with the flow of the game.

And on top of that, everyone's outlook on what was important about what happened is different, and stating your take on events can help solve the game too.

I'm imagining a system where posts become a different color if the reach some number of upvotes. This might make it easier to read a large thread.

Are you talking something like rep?

Personally, I'd still want to read the actual content of the game and not something people just upvote.

Or you could just come and play hunger games and not worry about anything that's said in the game thread :)

 just put in your kill and posting is irrelevant.

something like rep, but nothing that prevents someone from noticing other posts. if someone is short on time or the thread is too big it'd make it easier right?

It's very ingrained in me to read the whole thread. In mafia, people aren't too receptive to the idea of skimming, and I'm not sure I would get the feel for what's going on that way.

Depends on the site

I've been skimming since 2014 and nobody's gunned me down for it yet

The problem with the rep idea is getting people to actually vote for comments worth repping. You'll get a smattering of posts that some people want to personally remember, but I think for the most part people will still read the whole thing and take their own notes.

I would totally rep the posts I wanted my teammates to read.

But I doubt that I would, and I'm willing to bet I'm not alone in that. My point is the system isn't reliable for getting the information you would expect, and if you expect to rely on it then you could be missing stuff.

No, I don't really think so. You might think something is more important than someone else. It's a matter of opinion and people really should read/skim on their own.

You really gonna trust people that are mafia to tell you what to read?

Yes.
+1

Mafia in essence try to look town. Therefore any rep they provide will be worth looking at. What they say personally is suspect, but what they point out isn't.

As opposed to posts/day limits, restrictions, and the curb your enthusiasm mentality, I think it might be possible to convince people to use a sort of highlighting system as a member of this community. Stranger things have happened, and I don't see how it can hurt. Certainly wouldn't take away anyone's ability to read the full thread.

What if you don't have time to read the entire thread? If 10, 7, or even 5 people of 20 must all highlight a post for it to turn a different color on your screen you will probably want to read that post. In addition you have a smattering of single voted posts that offer you information about what players are reading. A rep system does not limit what you can read, and it will only add information to the pool of resources you have at your disposal.  At worst it's an add-on and at best it provides a means of communication analogous to asking what's going on and trusting your teammates to tell you the truth.

I think it'd be a disaster anyway, lol.

No it wouldn't. You just have to be clear about these things. This is a closed community. Not many new faces. Very easy to direct and inform, and it's not literally reputation points. It's not a social stigma. Bad and good posts alike would hypothetically be highlighted.
