Is using QT boards still a thing?

I have a game idea, but am trying to work out the logistics of it. Do we still use QT boards for private chat areas such as Mafia chat?

If so, I have some questions regarding its functionality.

Can someone with access to the board read it without posting, therefore keeping their presence a secret?

If someone joins the chat after stuff has been posted, do they have access to everything that has been said?

Is there a way to make someone lose access to it?

Sounds like you're worried it might be complicated or something.

Be sure to have someone double check it for you.

Someone looking from the outside will often catch things you might not, I've found people checking my games very useful in the past.

Yeah.

I don't think it's like a strict rule or anything so you could probably use DM chat, PM's, Skype, email, etc if you want but you'll run into issues with all of those that QT just doesn't really have so it's generally the best thing to use.

It's pretty limited for anything besides posting text lol.

Yes and no.

Every unique IP is logged and viewable by all.

It doesn't necessarily mean 5 people have viewed the QT if 5 unique IPs have been logged, but it might make one more paranoid if you can't confirm for sure one way or an other.

Yes and no.

Anything that's there when they enter is obviously viewable but if anything has been edited or deleted they wont be able to see.

That said, anyone who was there before and subscribed to get email updates will know what was posted even if the posts were edited or deleted.

Is there a way to make someone lose access to it?

No I don't think so.

Your best bet is to move whoever you want to continue talking to a new QT if the old one becomes compromised.

Thank you Nolder. I'm not worried about balance, as I'm incorporating existing roles from another game, just changing the format to forum. In any case, I was going to run it by someone anyway.

Also thank you for your other answers. They were very helpful.

The bold is especially true if it is Nolder.

I've been talking to a tech guy from QT - cos they deleted a topic of mine by accident - and he asked this:

'You're welcome!

Hey, I know that QuickTopic gets a lot of use from Mafia Adventure games. Can you think of anything that would make the QuickTopic experience better for you? Besides not deleting your boards, of course.

Steve'

Does anyone have any ideas they'd like me to pass on?

Only thing I could think of is to allow board owners to have a "sticky" message at the top of the board.

This would be useful in a number of ways. Off the top of my head you could sticky the setup in a dead thread so people don't have to dig all the way to the beginning of the board to see who's who and what their roles were.

They already have this feature but it's for people who get QT Pro so it's very unlikely they'd be willing to give it up for free users but that's all I can think of.

It's a very solid service and delivers exactly what you'd want from it.

You were in a Mafia QT at the time you made this thread, which opens with "Do we still use QTs for Mafia chat?"

Do you understand why you can't do that?

I think angle shooting is commendable.  It's no different than certain players asking moderators loaded questions to trick them into accidentally revealing information.

I guess I don't.

The idea is that, by you needing to ask, you imply you don't know. If you are not in a game, that's no problem. But doing it mid-game implies you are not in a chat already, which has the implication you can't be mafia.

TL;DR If you are in a game it's better to err on the side of caution and make threads like these after the game is over

Another way to put what Cory and Clov are saying is imagine you're in a game that just started and several people vote you over a joke. A few minutes later you make a thread asking "What's the best way to play as a cop?". People in the game will interpret that as you being cop or, worse, as you trying to make them think you're a cop. It just muddies the waters in an unfair way.
