It's sad that there are people who don't know of the Kivam gambit. Sirayn? You were there. Care to tell the story?

PLEASE!

WAY BACK IN THE DAY, Sirayn always nagged at us to play Chat Mafia. But, we always made her be the Mod, or else it wasn't fair to everyone else.

That was fun. It's been a long time.

We got a new chat mafia group! (sorta)

It consists of Nolder, Red, Tress (Songstress), Ishy (Ishamael Forsaken), John Snow (newbie, but good), Tiink (all you need to know about him is he's famous for his baguette ), and Tina (TinaHel, our Lady Dragon ). Oh yeah, plus some schlub named Despothera () Might be others but those are the only ones I know about.

You should totally come join us some time! Not sure if you still play, but another player to help the chat games get rolling would be great! Plus you can regale us with stories about how things used to be and such

Alanna posted this in the WoT books madia dead thread:

"Kivam and Talya (two super oldschool players) did a gambit back in one of their games a long time ago. They were both mafia, and on Day 1 they went at each other, accusing each other, and lynched...one of them, I don't remember which. I'm thinking they lynched Talya. So Kivam was totally safe for the whole game, because he had gotten a mafia lynched on Day 1. Now the term for that play is called Kivam's Gambit, where one mafia purposefully gets a teammate lynched in order to vet him or herself."

There wouldn't have been a QT. I think I was the first mod to introduce QTs to DM, and that was a long time after that fabled game.

To be honest, I don't know what the fuss was all about. Mafiosi bussing each other isn't uncommon.

It's interesting though, because when I first started playing mafia (which was way after the Kivam Gambit, of course), it actually wasn't that common to buss a teammate. I remember one person who used to play a lot actually got really made at a teammate for doing that to them. Nowadays, it's pretty common again.

Of course, I come from the "too nice" generation apparently, so maybe that's why

Maybe not on this site, but certainly at mafiascum it's pretty much normal.

I'd say that you're allowed to communicate in the day as mafiosi, which you are on DM, then it would be only polite to tell the person you're bussing what you're doing.

Well, then a transcript of the msn or pm convo, or wherever it came up first. And I know they didn't invent bussing, but you know they must have mapped it out to some degree

Not like us coldhearted newbloods lol. For instance, my policy is to bus first, ask questions later. Ask Turin

... but the reactions are so much more genuine if you don't tell them first!

And it helps sometimes to pull off the bus, also. If you know they plan to bus you, then you can try acting a little scummier on purpose to help set up the bus.

I modded the Kivam Gambit game. It was in 2007, so pretty much when we first started playing mafia on DM (we started in 2006 in Fiddlesticks).

I was asked by Egwene to mod the game for the Illuminators Org (now the Artists, Crafters, and Writers). They had some fair or something going on so she suggested a public thread so that those not participating in the mafia game could still be involved.

The way the public thread worked was they counted as an extra vote. I think if a certain number of them agreed on a certain player before the deadline, then that player in the game would have an extra vote.

Sirayn was in the public thread along with Egwene. Talya and Kivam were scum. They were scared of Sira's mafia skills, so they decided to pull the Kivam Gambit. They went at each other, resulting in Kivam's lynch, and Talya seemingly being vetted as innocent.

There you have it. Once I get access to my old laptop I'll see if I can't find the docs I used when I modded the game. Sadly, the threads were lost in one of the board upgrades, but here you can read the first page of the game thread and the first page of the public thread.

Oh the memories. And yes, for those of you reading the game thread, you read that right. Not only did Jason play the game, I came out of the gate firing at him.

"Whoever modded the last game tends to be evil in the next one. (I also noticed that people are rarely evil twice in a row, but none of our evils from last game are in this one, so that insight is useless) And since Talya modded the last game on Fiddles, she goes right to the top of my list."

Barmly, I can't believe you let that one fly. Then again, I guess Kivam was trying to get himself lynched...

I feel like one of those young 5 year olds who are being told about the good old days when so and so was still alive.
