I was once stuck in a riot here, luckily the store we were in closed up and kept us all safely inside. But here the cops didn't have any qualms whatsoever using force (Water cannons, rubber bullets etc) and so far as I can see, they didn't want to use that in London and the other cities? Imo if these people want to cause trouble, they can get the bruises it takes.

I was very confused to about what seemed to be a lack of counter measures. None of the video displayed really showed much from the police's end. Why did they wait so long before calling in more forces? Did it just escalate too fast? or what?

Just to clarify, she wasnt my girlfriend, but a girl i was visitin that day. Im (mostly) single :)

 

Things are calmer in part due to police organization, threat of rubber bullets and water cannon, the army and also because local people have started marching as well and gathering in hundreds and refusing to let the yobs down certain streets. I may, uh, possibly have been busy at one or two of these events in my local area...i mean i can neither confirm or deny that, but my lack of DM activity should in know way cause people to conclude i have been one of the people using twitter and bbm to organise anti riot marches. Ahem. The police have sanctioned such action but warned us we cannot (openly :p ) carry weapons in the street or engage in vigilante action (but we can defend ourselves if they decide to push their luck).

 

As to why police didnt respond faster, thays the highly charged million dollar question right now. I think this kind of violence was entirely unexpected and caught police on the hop. Reticence to use strong methods was shown because a lot of the perps are as young as the 11-14 age range and they (an their older relatives) are members of armed gangs. On the one hand we dont wanna start beating on kids, on the other hand we dont want their older gang member relatives to get mad and start coming out with guns. Escalation worries. But threat of it seems to be controlling them, finally.

Thanks for the support in spirit mills. We've had good turnouts but only really needed it on tuesday. Nothin much happenin since then and numbers dwindled now. Am home before 12 for the first time. Might give it one more night tomorrow purely because its saturday and if anythin it will happen at the weekend and then call it done. Im knackered, havnt slept more than 5 hours since last week. It's sad that the kids are my age but the huge difference is my parents punish me and I don't do it again. Not like I've done anything bad though, cause I haven't. I'm honestly ashamed that I'm even put into the same sterotype as those kids because of my age.

The problem isn't really in a certain age group, but in the ascendency of the "I'm entitled" sub-group, who have spread their beliefs to their children and some people around them. This has filtered through to certain government agencies, who in turn have made this general policy/law, which has just widened the vicious circle.

What does everyone think about the e-petition to cut rioters' benefits? I haven't followed this up more closely than Dad telling me about it, so haven't heard all the details. From what I've heard I think it's a good way to teach a lesson. But is it too harsh?
