Discuss Rand's Offscreen Movements

Maybe a good thread would be about Rand and his movements in this book. It seems to be possible thru circumstantial evidence to figure out what he was up to when he was offscreen. For example Min places him in Andor for three days after leaving the White Tower and before getting to Tear. Do people think he was in the black tower? Also throughout the book there are random patches of sunlight that may be an indication of Rands movements.

what was interesting to me is that Caemlyn was under sunshine for a while and yet we don't see Rand there (don't have ToM book yet, only audiobook, but if I remember correctly it was remarked that sun was there for like 6-7 days). Is this because of Mat? But than we know that it was not the case before, food not spoiling around Perrin and Mat is one thing, but sunshine is another. So, was Rand hiding or lurking in Caemlyn for whatever reason?

I think it's unlikely, Elayne would've sensed him through the bond if he's that close.

I'd say the sunshine is a combined effect of the presence of Mat(ta'veren) and Elayne(due to the Dragon's bond and babies) in Caemlyn.

i believe that the sunshine was due to Elayne, in a PoV from her, she remarked that since VoG, sunshine has appeared over Caemlyn

chapter 45 A Reunion

I guess Rand's kids that something to do with than? Interesting....

i think its from the bond

"Morning light peeked through the drapes. Elayne sat back, feeling the powerful warmth through the bond with Rand that had appeared there. Light, but that was a wonderful sensation. The moment she'd begun feeling it, the cloud cover around Andor had broken."

That's a very good point and quote. One of the drawback of audiobooks is that you can't really quote like that (unless you self employed and all)

guess it must be harder indeed with audiobooks, i never tried listening to one.

but no worries for the quote

hope it cleared the whole thing for you :p

I think these last two books could have really done with dates at the start of each chapter just to get the timeline straight.

As far as I can see the Rand plotline has gone from slightly ahead of Matt and a couple of weeks ahead of Perrin to a week or so behind each of them?.

Given how fast the story is moving there could be half a books worth of scenes right there. Including a confrontation at the black tower.

So the most important 'offscreen' movements must surely become onscreen in the next book.

You know, maybe Rand was walking the countryside making sure people had food to eat. I mean, let Egghead deal with the leaders and in meanwhile he can save thousands and thousands of lives. I know a long stretch, but not a bed way to spend the savior's time - you know, saving people...

Shouldnt that happen to Min too then? As far as I can remember she only sees the sun when Rand is close.

You are remembering it wrong - the sun appeared over Tear before Rand returned and while he was quite far away.

ToM, Chapter 12

The warmth that Min was enjoying, however, had nothing to do with the heat in the air.

Sunlight shone upon the city. In the Stone's courtyards, Defenders in their striped sleeves and breeches kept stopping and looking up toward the open sky. The clouds still lurked on the horizon, but they were broken around the city in an unnatural ring. Perfectly circular.

The warmth that Min felt was not caused by the sunlight. How can you just sit there?" Nynaeve demanded. Min turned her head. The window was wide open, and the walls of the Stone were thick. Min sat on the windowsill with her knees bent, her bare oes touching the wall on the other side. Her boots and stockings lay on the floor beside a stack of books.

Nynaeve paced the room. The Stone of Tear had withstood sieges and storms, wars and desolation, but Min wondered if it had ever survived any. thing quite like Nynaeve al'Meara in a pique. The dark-haired Aes Sedai had spent the last three days stalking through the corridors like a crackling thunderhead, intimidating Defenders, terrifying servants.

"Three days," Nynaeve said. "Three days he's been gone! The Last Battle looms, and the Dragon Reborn is missing."

"He's not missing," Min said softly. "Rand knows where he is."

"You do as well," Nynaeve said, her voice curt.

"I'm not leading you to him, Nynaeve."

"And why not? Surely you can't—"

"He needs to be alone."

Nynaeve cut off. She walked over to the corner table and poured herself a cup of chilled Tremalking black. Chilled tea. That seemed so odd. Tea was meant to be warming during cold days.

Min turned her eyes northward again, into the distant, cloud-smothered haze. As far as she could determine through the bond, she was looking directly at him. Was he in Andor, perhaps? Or in the Borderlands?

Yeah, at this point we can all assume that the sunshine is b/c of bonds. Good quoting everyone biggrin.gif

The bonds appear to be a prerequisite, but methinks Alanna isn't getting a ring o'sunshine.

Well, we don't know that really. On the other hand, maybe love is required as well. We'll find out in 1.5 years.....depressing...

Most emphatically YES!

All the jumping forward, backward, and sideways through the story has made it nearly impossible to figure out what is happening when. The reader should not be required to draw up a flow chart just to know what's going on.

This is supposed to be a fun read not a science project.

Rand's missing for approximately 20 days of the 27 since VoG.

We know he's not taken care of the BT, (Asks Naeff to check it out post-Maradon)

He's not taken care of the Seanchan. (Confession Rand makes at Maradon)

So he's probably taken care of Lan and Tarwin's Gap since that fits with the timeline.

Easier to look at the few days when we can place him.

VoG+1 - meets Egwene

VoG +2/3 - back in Tear

VoG +4 - Bandar Eban

Big Gap

VoG +25 - Maradon

VoG +26 Far Madding

VoG +27 - Merrilor

Between VoG 4-24 is also when Lan should have reached Tarwin's Gap

Voila - twas Tarwins' Gap for Lan, Rand and Nynaeve

Apart from timelines, some backup evidence is Bashere telling Ituralde that the army, Ashaman, AS, etc, should have got to Maradon days ago on VoG+25.

Given Travel, they could only have been held up by compelling circumstances ie fighting at Tarwin's Gap.

Further backup evidence

Lan arrives at the Arafel-Kandor border a little after VoG+4 (he feels Nyn's bond)

He'd be due to reach Tarwin's Gap around VoG+20-odd.

I'm guessing this section will be written from Nyn's PoV and it will confuse the hell out of readers due to skipping back in timelines.

Was there also a couple of references to him wearing a simple/plain coat/cape when he returns from dragonmount? Did we find out where he got it? If I remember, he did not have it in the White Tower, but he did in Tear...

He traded his nice coat to a beggar for it in tGS when he was incognito in Ebou Dar right before almost decided to obliterate the Seanchan. I thought he wore it continually throughout ToM? Maybe he changed to look more presentation in the White Tower.

No, I think you're right - he was wearing it all through out ToM.
