I didn't see Graendal surviving mostly because it's a bit cliched. The unkillable villian that Rand thinks that he has killed already eg. every Forsaken that didn't die by balefire and Ishy surviving the first two encounters even though Rand clearly believes that he has killed him. It's been done enough and I didn't see it coming. It's too played out. I did however call the Light Aura/Warp in the Air around Rand. The pattern has to fix itself just to survive at this point and as Moraine says more than once a taveren as strong as Rand can and will be the focus of the entire patttern as it attempts to reassert it's reality.

For the simple reason that you said you didn't actually believe she escaped, I'm not willing to give that one to you Luckers (but honestly, who cares about my opinion =p).

I, on the other hand, called it and was willing to go down with that ship if it had sunk. It didn't. I remember reading it and NOT actually thinking she died, then I got on DM and people were talking about how Graendel was finally dead and I was like "what? how could you possibly think she died?"

Once again, my shoulder aches from me patting myself on the back...

I received my Official RAFO card from Brandon at JordonCon when I asked him if we would see Greandal in ToM or MoL. I said she HAD to have survived because we were told that Asmodean's killer would be revealed. And since it wasnt, and she was his killer, then its clear that she is still alive. He just smiled and slid the card to me and didn't say a word. :)

What if that scene had gone like:

Aran'gar: I wish you would stop bragging about killing Asmo.

Random zombie: Rand is coming.

Greandal: Let me use the true power to see what he is doing.

Aran'gar: Where is all that saidin coming from?

Greandal: Oh crap.

And she eats it.

The basic premise for this actually belongs to Terez, but I'll repeat it here -

Somebody ( I don't think it's Gawyn ) fatally wounds Rand, and Alivia balefires him before he can succumb, thus preventing the DO from getting access to his soul.

I've been tying to figure out how Alivia was supposed to "help him die" for years. This idea meets the KISS principle, so is probably most nearly correct.

wow, Alivia knows balefire? I wonder who (taught/will teach) her that!

Women who know balefire:

Graendal, Cyndane, Moghedien, Mesaana, Moiraine, Nyneave (I don't think she remembers how though)

Women who might know balefire:

Cadsuane, Alivia herself or other Seanchan damane, Alviarin (seems unlikely), someone using ter'angreal the BA had...

Did I miss anyone?

  • 2 weeks later...

In the chapter titles thread I tried and failed to articulate how I felt that the chapter "The End of a Legend" would be about Birgette. While I had speculated many ways it could be about her.. it was nice to have my instinct confirmed, even if not in any way I had imagined. It was indeed about one of her death's!
