Pet peeves when playing mafia?

Now I know that anything goes in mafia, whether it be manipulation, lying, or backstabbing. But is there anything that irritates you particularly? Let's not get personal here, and try to include constructive reasons as to why you get irritated.

1) DM makes it hard to search posts. Mafiascum has a handy thing that lets you view people's posts all in one big list. If DM had that, I would be so much happier, as it would make re-reads easier.

2) Useless, non-game related spam, for making re-reads harder. There's other places for that (I mod both of them  ;D )

Of course, I can accept that mafia might try to use it as a technique to distract the town. For this reason, if I see anybody spamming I'm inclined to think that they're trying to hide something.

3) A playstyle that you see on DM where people refuse to commit themselves to a vote, and the game doesn't go anywhere as a result. Come on, people! You can't play mafia if you don't play!

While I can understand townies not wanting to lynch a townie, the truth is that they can often afford to, and it provides information useful in catching mafia. A very common mafia tell is to not commit to a vote, since the thinking then goes that they can't be accused of being on a bad lynch.

3a) My getting accused of being 'eager to lynch' or being suspicious for voting early because I've been trying to get the game going.  >:(

4) Self-hammering. If you're a townie, you should go down fighting, or else you've not done your best to help the town. If you're mafia, well, I suppose it could be justified. It irritates me all the same, though.

(wow, I sound grumpy.  :D )

Grumpy ole Pandy, I like that! :D

Hm, I haven't played enough games to actually have found things that irritate me.  I definitely understand all the reasons that Pandy gave for his pet peeves, but I personally don't feel irritated by them.

Maybe I'm just too easygoing or a pushover. :P

I suppose the only thing that has really irritated me in games is when someone who is confused (or doesn't know what to do) gives up.  I get it, sometimes people end up disliking mafia.  Some people just don't get it; I understand that.

But when someone plays mafia for the first time and gives up at the first twist of the game, I don't like that.  Quitter behavior is definitely not attractive. :D

If you're confused, just ask for help.  If you still don't get it right away, at least do your best for the rest of the game before you give up on mafia.  Every player counts.

In a game I'm modding, one of the newbie players just wasn't understanding the game, and until recently this person had only posted to say he/she was confused.  This player had actually given up on the game, wasn't even TRYING to contribute, and I was pretty irritated.  However, we were able to talk about it and it turns out that they were actually less confused than they imagined. Now the player is active in the game again.  Proving my point that if you give up you're just hurting everyone, because you may just be able to contribute if you try.

Anyway, that's my rant on possibly the only thing that actually creates an emotion in me at this time. :D

1.  When you are the finder or some other role that you gain info from and right as you get really good info.. like who the mafia godfather is.. you die before you can tell anyone.

2.  People who sign up for the game and then never bother to show up.  Or they do show up... 20 pages in.. just to say sorry I haven't been here.. lemme just go back to reread.  And they apparently get lost somewhere back on page 5 because you don't see them again til you threaten to lynch them on page 27.

3. I've been known to do a little bit of spam once in awhile in games but I also crack down to actually playing the game when I need to.  I will very rarely do games outside of organized games anymore because too many people spam up the entire thread with useless nonesense.  When you don't play them alot like the people in OG do you don't tend to be as serious about it.

4.  You are guilty if you agree with someone.  You are guilty if you disagree with them.

5. You reveal a role or some aspect of the game and you are 100 percent telling the truth and have info that will help the town but NO ONE believes you no matter what you say.  You want to scream when they lynch you anyways and gladly gloat "i told you so's" in your final post and end game.

I'm in definite agreement with #2, Naeann! I know RL stuff happens, but then just drop out! Dont leave the rest of the group hanging. (I happen to be in a game where several people have done this very thing, and they are being lynched off one by one. But, it takes time away from the game when REAL stuff could be happening.)

1. Mynd :P

2. Signing up and not showing up. I've done it on occasion, but I try to avoid signing up if I won't commit to the game, or backing out if I realise once the game has started that I can't play. If you're just going to be stupid inactive, stop in once every couple of days to say "I'm doing a re-read, more thoughts soon" and show up again later to say the same thing, then I'm inclined to not let you sign up for the next game I run, because I dislike that.

Totally agreed.

One technique that could be useful on DM is clicking the "Print" button (the forum button in the same line of options as "Reply").  It lists all the posts on one page.  But it might slow down your computer (if it's a massive thread) and no formatting is listed (or at least no glows).  However, you can Crtl-F and search for "Post by: Player Name" to view all of a specific players posts.

LOL at Barm...

I have to agree with the rest of you. Those that sign up and hardly post if ever. If you know you are going to be away, or have linited time, then don't sign up because it really slows a game down and then people get fed up with waiting on people!

Non related game spam, i ueually do at the beginning, it's like warming up, but I'm not too keen on it once the game has got going.

Pandy, If you click on some ones name and there is a list at the bottom of their profile. One if tham is to review the post made by that person. That can be useful for checking posts of people. Especially if they only play mafia and nt much else. Or it can be annoying, when I annoyed Dae because we had a spam fest at the BT and he tried looking at mine...*giggles*

I don't like it when people say how things are played elsewhere (mafia.scum) or what roles say on wiki as though they are the be all and end all. This is DM we have different ways of playing things and that is up to whoever is the mod. So quit comparing things. Those places can usefull for directing newbies. But don't say in a game that it is done a certain way on mafia.scum or it says this on wiki, so that must be right....grrr!

err...thats it for now

Yep - you've become "that guy" over on Jetnation  ;D

And people who've played with me on MJ know this - if someone signs up for one of my games and then disappears without even a courtesy "sorry, have to drop out" PM, I will carry the grudge forever, and lead vendetta lynches against you in game after game.  It's common courtesy, people - yes, life happens, and life takes precedence.  But have the decency to tell the mod so they can do something about it.

Illogical people.  It drives me crazy, whether I'm a townie or scum.

I'd not doubt it, I've stopped signing up there because their games move so fast that keeping up is too much of a hassle for me.

1) My biggest pet peeve at this point is people who sign up for a game, knowing they have an LOA coming up in the middle of it. Sometimes this can't be helped, but sometimes it's a planned vacation.

2) And I have to agree on the signing up but not showing up. Or not contributing when they do.

3) Lurkers. People who don't post much, so you can't get a feel for them. I know that's some people's play style, but it's irritating to me. But then some people are irritated with how much I post, so I guess that goes both ways.

Left click the persons name and down at the bottom of their profile is a link to all their posts.

Verbal.

and when people get offended when you lead a lynch on them

Hehe...you trying to get me to not stab you in the back?  Huh?

I keel you!!!!  :P

Losing is the biggest pet peeve. Ok, no, being thrown under the bus by a friend who is on your team when you actually get a chance to be evil together for the first time and you are in the best evil group possible to imagine.

Seriously no shows. They are the worst and that's why I haven't signed up in ages. I want to stretch my mafia legs again, but, there you have it.

(And the addiction to the game.)
