Stepping out of the interrogation room felt like stepping into another world.  The bright hallway burned away the fog in Sergeant Jacobs' mind.  CIA plots. Mass kidnappings. A goddamn robot?  He had to be crazy.  Still, something about the man behind him—the way he spoke about gunfights and conspiracies like they were everyday business—made Jacobs want to believe.

He checked both ways before heading toward admin.  He had a few things to accomplish but he made it only a few steps before he heard the rookie jogging up behind him.

With a sigh, Jacobs braced himself for the inevitable flood of words.

"Do you believe it? We've got a real story on our hands! How many people do you think he's killed? I hope Slacks is okay! I really—" It didn’t stop.

Jacobs reached the clerk’s desk before snapping into a hard about-face, putting a firm finger in Jacoby’s face.

"Rook, I don’t wanna hear a peep about this right now. That’s confidential until we can make something of it. And besides, you'd be better off not believing a word outta that man's mouth. The only thing we know for sure is he's a killer, you get me?"

He patted Jacoby on the shoulder, a small concession, and turned back toward Lydia, click-clacking away at her computer.

"Lydia, dear, can you do me a favor? I need the past week's incident logs, and any contact numbers you can find for local PD down in San Pedro. Remember that team we competed against at the police games last summer? Any of their contacts would be appreciated."

He waited for her nod before heading off toward the break room.
Time for some real coffee.

Half an hour later.

Jacobs returned to the interrogation room a new man.  He knew Jacoby was watching him from the other room—and he relished it.  The kid was about to get a masterclass.

Johns lifted his eyes when Jacobs entered.  The moment he saw Jacobs' face, his head snapped up. Good. He could feel it too.  Before John could regain his balance, Jacobs started in.

"Noticed you hadn’t touched your coffee. Brought you a water instead. Poured it myself."

Johns drained the cup in one long pull.

"So. Let’s say I believe you killed a cyborg. Where do we go from there?"

John settled back into his chair, comfortable returning to the story.

"Things got messy. Dead police officers. CIA operations killing civilians on U.S. soil. Explosions in public areas. It wasn't something we could easily keep quiet—but we could cover it up."

Jacobs nodded him along.

"After calling the case handler—Agent Johnson; they're all named that—we spent the next hour on cleanup. That metal man could be the biggest discovery of our time, but he also looked just like us. No one wanted the public seeing it. Took four of us to move it, even with half his torso missing. Heavy bastard."

"There were signs of activity at the docks. Nothing that would help with our case, but it confirmed our traitors were deep in the arms trade. Arms dealers are rough, well-traveled, hard to separate from the good guys. Half the people on our team fit that description."

"Agency cleanup arrived. They took over fast—corralled the locals, cops included, and moved us into a warehouse away from prying eyes.  With nothing better to do, we ransacked the offices. Mostly Cold War-era weaponry. Easier to traffic but not worth much.  Bedrock was digging through crates when he realized—"

"Everything was fake?" Jacobs cut him off.

John gave him a sharp look at the interruption.

Jacobs leaned in.  "I just spent the last thirty minutes tracking down every contact I know.  There's not a single report. Not a news article. Not even an obituary.  Nothing about a shootout or an explosion in San Pedro.  Not in the last month. Not ever."

"Like I said," John snapped. "They covered it up."

Jacobs' voice dropped lower.

"What kind of cover-up scrubs a dead cop so clean that nobody even whispers about it? You know what I think? I think you’re spinning tales.
When I get that incident report back, this conversation’s gonna look real different."

When John spoke again, his voice was cold as the grave.

"You pulled an Agency record?"

He didn’t wait for an answer.  His face twisted into something ugly—rage, contempt.

"You fool.  We're all dead.  You just killed us."

He shot up, chains straining against the bolted ring.  Jacobs fought the urge to step back.  Jacoby burst through the door, taser drawn.  John stood there, muscles flexed, breathing hard.  He stared at them both... then deflated, sitting back down.

"It's been a long week.  I don't have time for you not to believe me.  You can hear the rest of my story, or you can throw me in a cell.  But if you don’t get me out of here in the next few hours, we really are screwed."  His eyes were wet.  He meant it.

Jacobs slowly reached out and lowered Jacoby’s taser.  Then he turned back to John.

"Go on."

John nodded, almost to himself.  "We were splitting up.  We knew there were two imposters left.  Splitting up meant splitting their ability to respond."

"One team went to Cape Town. We figured if we just took out a rival they must have the same buyers.  This group was smuggling to an arms cartel there.   The other half went back to Florida. Family to save. Leads to chase.  Maybe we’d get lucky and split the enemy too."

Jacobs rolled his eyes, the guy was back to spinning his yarn.  John caught it—and sharpened his next words.

"You want proof, Detective?  Research the death of Special Agent Rick O'Connell.  We called him Dusty."

"When we got back, Dusty and Flash were digging into the recovered phone.  It was a bomb.  Flash survived. Dusty didn’t."  John folded his arms and fell silent, his face full of disgust.  He wouldn’t even look at them.

Jacobs watched him for a long beat.  The rookie shifted uneasily beside him.  A knock at the door broke the silence.

Jacobs yanked it open, anger bubbling - but Lydia’s face froze him cold.  He pulled Jacoby into the hallway and shut the door.

"What’ve you got, Lydia?"

She didn’t waste a second.

"I got in touch with someone on San Pedro SWAT, like you asked. They’re short-staffed right now. The guy wouldn’t share much, but he mentioned a funeral—some explosion took out one of their men. Said to keep it quiet. Beheading, apparently."

Jacobs felt a chill settle in his spine.  Next to him, the rookie whispered a prayer.

"Anything else?"

"Yeah. I wouldn’t have interrupted just for that." She glanced down at her notes, then back up. "Not long after, I got another call. Some special agent. Asked to speak to Chief McKenzie. Chief told me we’re to stop all communication with your suspect immediately. Odd timing, but the guy said he’ll be here in a couple of hours."

Jacobs already knew the answer before he spoke.  "Did this agent give a name?"

"Yeah. Agent Johnson."

Jacobs and Jacoby turned toward the door in unison.

I think you should maybe go and have a re read of Day 1 again

I have, just a skimming read, but Marsh said he came to defend you initially because he thought you were new. He was worried about LEADING a Lynch on a new player.

I found that added to my thoughts about him being Mafia cos how could he lead a Lynch that I'd started?

Now I did not know Marsh alignment, and you'd been Heavy on the wordage, so to me I could not understand why Town Marsh would step up for no reason. To me a Town would not know you were Town so why get involved at such an early point of the game.

He later advised that he came to think that you were actually Mafia and his seeming defence might cause people to vote him - which it did.

One of his posts actually says Heavy is scum right at the very top.

Before he goes on to list other people and why he thinks they might be Mafia.

And it was that which caused me to double down, cos if you put Heavy is Scum but then go on to vote another person it gives me the heebie jeebies cos surely you vote for who you think is most Mafia.

I'm sorry Marsh but at this point I'd gone all in and again this looked like throwing cover and reasons to not be voting you.

The thing is, not believing what a person says is not the same as actively lying.

If DPR did not believe Marsh, that does not mean DPR is lying about what his interpretation of events was. I did not believe Marsh but youve not called me out for lying.

you say i am intractable, which is a failing of mine it's true, and i am critical of everything. But not that im a liar.

Apparently you do not believe that DPR had that interpretation but to then stretch this out to be actively lying is a bit much.

But I'm finding it hard to figure out why you cling to this reason as your main sus of DPR, along with of course he's a big ol meanie head, but then also say that you don't find his actions to be anti Town. it's like you've got this one thing, and it's your go to reason for DPR.

So I'm thinking that maybe this is because you don't have anything else, and you are trying to distract us from looking this up and seeing that dead Town Marsh actually had you fully as Mafia.

So you've actually adopted Marsh thoughts about DPR and are using them as your own.

Meanie head? I saw you get your salt on a few pages back there lol

@Ithillian Turambar You’ve got Rand as 3p. Walk me through your thinking on that.

It was just that he had that weird purposeful thing that he said when Darthe explain that the condemn dude actually killed at night.

Made me think why highlight that, but why would anyone hint they were the 3rd Party... even though to start with they are only dangerous to their target and after that they should want to kill Mafia first.

But yeah it just stuck out to me so that's why.
