Old vs. New Mafia Rules and Playstyle

Red, thanks for the compliment, but I'm not that good. As for my time-era, Kivam's Police academy game was killer, but I died N2. haha

The thing that bugs me the most is the newish rule about not being allowed to talk to your partners off the QTs. Some of my best plots have been hatched on IM and then I summarized them on the QT, to keep everyone in the loop. That's really the only thing that comes to mind, but I did just wake up. I'm sure I'll be back.

In fairness, though, I am the one who started the rule about if the mod has to random lynch, you get no coroner report. I'm sure that bugs some people, too. New rules evolve. I just have to be picky which games I play in to avoid what I don't like, I guess.

^this. I personally hate mafia being confined to a QT only. Sometimes there are better ways to communicate and I think that leaving it to the mafia to decide is sometimes better. Yes yes, taking into account traitors and game-set ups and such, but I think that adds more of a challenge when we can talk wherever as mafia. But that's my opinion. Whatever it takes to win, you know?

Just to bring this up: this fad with mass reveals is really annoying to me. Since coming back to mafia, practically every game has had a flippin mass reveal and I just don't get this fad.

I don't like mass reveals either. It takes away the fun I have when I am playing mafia, because even when you lose and mafia wins, it is still more fun. Btw, I am probably the newest person here for online mafia, or one of the newest, but I have played mafia in RL for years before this. However, that was a lot less advanced than these games.

That and mod given safe claims, I think I might give those to prevent mass reveals, because I am starting to like them less & less.

I give character names as safe claims sometimes but usually prefer to construct my games so this is not necessary. I also sometimes post the town and mafia win conditions in my OP. Basically, do the minimum required to make it so that people cannot clear innocents using knowledge that is not gameplay related.

I simply don't allow character reveals unless the theme is something like Disney where there are 3000 names to choose from. Mass role reveals are the problem.

Mass role reveals can be dealt with by giving the mafia various disabling or killing roles (e.g. roleblocker, poisoner, strongman, limited-shot day kill) or by giving the town negative utility roles (e.g. beloved princess, Kivam's Avatar role). Also the variant of lie detector that doesn't work when revealed could be extended to other roles.

Sweet, according to Red's chart I'm Age of Legends awesome.

Kiv's first game modded: (the game originally started on DM6 and the transfer to DM7 happened halfway through... and the game thread from 6 didn't make it over, hence this one... there's a lot missing though, so there must be another game thread out there that I didn't see in my quick scan tonight)

Kiv's first game played: (and my second or third game)

http://www.dragonmou...e-pirates-game/

Here is the full list of rules from the first game I modded: (it was an alt-account game, so it had more rules than usual)

Rules: No changing the passwords! Or if you do, hang onto the password I gave you, and change it back AS SOON AS YOU DIE OR THE GAME ENDS! Whichever comes first.

Post with your Forsaken Account only!

All PM's MUST be done with your Mafia account, or they WILL be ignored.

Votes must either be Bolded or [glow=red,2,300]Glow[/glow]. They will be ignored otherwise.

You may NOT quote a PM from the mod.

If you are Evil, then the first line of your PM is “You are mafia.” Everyone else is NOT Evil, don’t keep sending me PM’s asking this! If you do have a role and any questions about it, don’t hesitate to ask, some of them are confusing.

I think I was the first mod to introduce quicktopics. Just saying. Before that, it was all PMs and MSN, etc.

I think that limiting claims is entirely the wrong way to handle mass claims. Mods should design games so that mass claims don't break them, rather than trying to limit claims in the rules. It's never fun to play games where there are arbitrary rules like that designed to cover poor game design.

I actually don't think there's a lot of difference on DM. I've been around since nearly the AoL according to Red's chart, and haven't noticed any dramatic changes. People don't play any better now than they used to, but they don't play any worse. Perhaps the general standard of play has declined a bit since people like Kivam and Wes stopped playing regularly, but I think others are rising to take their place. Red's got as good a scumdar as anybody, for example. Perhaps the biggest change is that people now hark nostalgically back to the olden days...

This is gonna be a mishmash, bear with me

I think I played in one of the first games on here (Vampires vs Werewolfs). I've searched a bit, but couldn't find it :( If anyone does, please tell me.)

Oh, and there was a scoreboard and points awarded.

But those never were a real success, since no one really got involved in them and the consecutive pointgivers gave up every couple of games.

Quicktopic was a real blessing. Before, you needed to use the DM messenger to get MSN contacts, and than be on MSN at the same time. Very cumbersome. However, I don't like the idea of some mods to keep all conversation on them.

Mod given safe claims are a good idea, though I've only seen them used once.

One of the best changes was the creation of a separate board. We should do some other games on here as well again ;D

Another change is that games are taken more seriously. Before, DM mafia was more about having fun. Now everyone wants to win, even if that means not posting if you really want to, or getting more personal with insults etc. That's probably mainly because DM grew.

womby, how was Kivs Avatar role negative? as it was my specific role in that game, i recall it relied on finding other roles to utilize powers but there were no direct negative effects (like the beloved princess) to the town unless you mean that if i was killed it automatically ended the game. but this was offest and balanced by the fact the all the town knew who i was. which was both a burden and a blessing imo.

For your amusement:

The first mafia type game played on DM (or at least the "new" DM that came in 2006)

The first mafia (werewolf) game held in Fiddlesticks. Those games later prompted the creation of this board.

This thread is when I first introduced the idea to Fiddlesticks.

They were known as werewolf games for some time because the forum I got the game idea from called them werewolf games.

Then Sirayn modded the first (on DM (?)) game called mafia. Planning mafia 1 and 2.

I also modded the Illuminators Murder Mystery game where Kivam and Talya played a great game. Sadly those threads have been lost. At least the Internet Archive has the first page of the two threads: game thread and public thread.

Thought you might enjoy some old mafia history!

Reana, why did you stop playing??

Maybe you could create an invite only game inviting the older players and selected newer players to get a good mix & match going.

Posted

i honestly don't liek creating invite only games; imo the way for newer players to learn how to play the game is to play with older players and mentor them. that and theres very few players, new and old, that i'd not want to invite, and i'd hate doing that cause i feel liek i'm playign favorites

I guess I'm a newbie here. I started playing with Locke's Mistborn game some six months ago. In my experience, the main things that changed over that period had to do with me not being an idiot newbie (I'm surprised Mynd didn't get me lynched in that game- he certainly tried).
