It would have been nice to have been sent an invite to play in the Game of Thrones mafia game. To me, it seems almost like a Mafia mod appearing as if he being either elitist and/or showing favoritism to whom he chose to play that game, instead of opening up the game for people to sign up and play.

like when they picked teams in school? i would feel bad about poking my non-mafia nose in, except this was an open discussion instead of on a hidden board, and it kind of seemed like maybe it was meant to be read by people who weren't invited. . .

That's about how I feel about that, as well, cindy. So, I have to ask "the cool kids" in that GoT mafia game, do y'all think I'm being a whiney crybaby about the GoT mafia game having a selection process, instead of the normal chances for people to sign up to play that game?

We occasionally do "invitation only" games on DM. This isn't new.

Vambram, the point of having the game here is to show dragonmount players how a game goes when people are active and scum-hunting and not doing precisely all the things listed in this thread. Making it an open game and letting anyone play would defeat the purpose, so Kivam chose to invite players that in his experience are a) skilled at the game and b) active players.

 

This is a great opportunity for those who are not in the game to follow it and learn some tips and tricks about the game, and see why the games here are chasing all those "cool kids" away from playing games on Dragonmount. More than one has stated in this thread that they don't play here much anymore because of issues like those listed here.

but it sure as heck ain't coming across that way to myself and a few others here.

I visited the jetsnation mafia forums, and I see that a lot of "cool kids" play there. So, therefore, when the cool kids play an invitation only game here on Dragonmount, then despite the good intentions y'all may have, it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. And, I don't believe I am the only person who feels this way, Barmacral.

I have been on the outside looking in on an invite only game before and although it doesn't feel great, I think you are blowing it out of proportion, Vambram. Also, since Kivam is putting forth the effort to mod the game, it is his prerogative to run it how he sees fit. I do hope that some of the legends stick around for other games though :)

I might be over reacting, too. And I can understand how you all believe that y'all are teaching less experienced players on how the best ways are to play mafia.

I just don't like the idea of invitation only games, even if I was invited, because to me invitation only games appear to be an elitist game, and I really don't like elitism.

As for learning how to play mafia, I have always found that the best way for me, and many others, to learn something is not by just by watching the veterans, but by also playing in games with "the legends".

Just my 2 cents:

 

Only been playing for not quite 2 weeks now, but "the vets" have been really good at letting me into their games and showing me how it's done. I know I'm nowhere near the level of you guys, but with their help and example, my game is worlds above what it was on day one. And to be completely honest, I wouldn't feel at all comfortable in a game comprised of nothing but the best of the best, I'd get my ass handed to me. But this isn't in response to you Vam, you're already at the top and I get where you're coming from, this is to Lily to let her know that her efforts to teach the new players isn't in vain. If not for you and others, I'd never get a chance to play and get better and that's what I and other newbies really want is just a chance to play. So please don't get frustrated and leave, beacause at least as far as I'm concerned, I want to eventually get to where you guys are and maybe get into those invite-only games someday.

I don't think it is elitist to recognize that players with reputations tend to be better for games. Hopefully the group of players with such reputations will grow.

 

I agree that the best way to learn mafia is to jump right in. Maybe in the future someone can do a compromise where invites are given out beforehand but some of the slots are filled via signups.

I do a sort of compromise. I have a few players on auto-signup in my games, because I'd hate for them not to get in, but also allow other signups. This does a couple of things - it makes sure I have a group of players I know are experienced and it allows others in to learn from them. From now on, though, I will be really strict about activity, for what that's worth. I hope you'll play in my next game, Vam. I won't be limiting players. (Well, that's not entirely true. I will cap it at 30, if it gets that big.)
