Song 43: Desperado

ORIGINAL: The Eagles

"Desperado" is a song written by Glenn Frey and Don Henley. It first appeared on the 1973 album Desperado, and has later appeared on numerous compilation albums.

While this is one of the Eagles' signature songs, it was never released as a single. "Desperado" was voted #494 in the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

COVER: The Carpenters

Recorded when Karen Carpenter was just 24 yeas old, Richard says that he and Karen almost did not record this song, but did it on a whim after a studio executive suggested the song for the "Horizon" album. He felt that with the Eagles version as well as Linda Ronstadt's recording of the song already available, there was no need for them to record their version, but in retrospect, he says he's glad they did . This recording remains one of Karen's most heartfelt and melancholic performances. But because several other artists had recorded the song, A&M decided not to release the song as a single, despite the fact that the song is one of the best tracks on the album.

Song 44: Smells Like Teen Spirit

ORIGINAL: Nirvana

The unexpected success of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" propelled Nevermind to the top of the charts at the start of 1992, often marked as the point where alternative rock entered the mainstream. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's first and biggest hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and placing high on music industry charts all around the world in 1991 and 1992.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" received many critical plaudits, including topping the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics' poll and winning two MTV Video Music Awards for its music video, which was in heavy rotation on music television. The song was dubbed an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X,[2][3] but the band grew uncomfortable with the success and attention it received as a result. In the years since Cobain's death, listeners and critics have continued to praise "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

COVER: Tori Amos

There have been many cover versions of this song recorded, but Tori Amos' piano version was one of the first. It appeared on her 1992 Crucify EP, and Cobain referred it to as "a great breakfast cereal version." Which might be considered odd, as she went on to have a hit with the song called Cornflake Girl :)

Thanks Serry!  :)

And anyone interested in running this thread this week, please PM me before the night is over (my time). I will host it this week, but would prefer someone else to step up to the plate this week as I need to do some studying for my exam next week.

Scrap that! I will do this week! Tough luck if anyone wanted it! PM me as next week will be up for grabs - it will be first come, first served!  ;D

Song 45: Running Up That Hill

I'm back this week. This weeks sees a 1980s great take on a Dutch metal group (and one of my favourite groups and would love to see live at some stage! Maybe in April next year...).

ORIGINAL: Kate Bush

This is Bush's second highest peaking single, reaching number 3 in the UK charts in 1985. It reached the top 30 in the US as well. There was a bit of a problem surrounding the name of the song, especially in America, as it was meant to be called A Deal with God.

COVER: Within Temptation

This is probably one of my favourite groups at the moment. They are probably one of the heavyweights within the genre of symphonic metal. Sharon den Adel is one of three women I would leave Northie for - but I won't go on too much about that! lol! They are extremely popualar within Europe, with many awards on the continent. Kerrang magazine rated their concert at the Ahoy Theatre in Rotterdam with the Metropole Orchestra as "[this really is] the greatest show on earth!"

Time to wrap this up. And Within Temptation and Covers win by 4 votes to 2.

The next original and cover are on the way.

Also, if you want to run this thread next week (Monday 14th December to Monday 21st December), please PM or email me. As I have said in the past, it will count as an activity in relation to ORG points.

PLEASE NOTE: I will not be running it that week as I have an exam.
