Guitarists for the Band's Band - It's A Knockout (Winner: Carlos Santana)

Corki

Recommended Posts

"It's A Knockout" returns this month after a break in September when we focused on Covers and Originals and which was the better.

As you may have gathered by now, the Band is currently constructing its dream band, filling the positions of Guitarist, Bassist, Male and Female Vocals, Drummer and Keyboardist to begin with. Up first is the position of Guitarist. Nine (9) Guitarists got nominated to challenge for the honour, and a further seven (7) have been added by Corki to compete for the position in the Band's Dream Band. The guitarist that makes it into the Band's Dream Band is the one that wins this "It's A Knockout" contest. It is basically down to you to pick who gets that important position.

"It's A Knockout" remains with the longer format this month - and this means there are 16 guitarists instead of 8!

"It's a Knockout" - Format

For those of you who have not been involved with a "It's A Knockout" thread before, the rules are quite simple. The Band of the Red Hand is DM's travel and music ORG, and "It's a Knockout" is a knock out competition to find out the winner of the chosen category (past categories include Micheal Jackson songs, Classical Music, One Hit Wonders). Each day, 2 guitarists will be posted, along with a link so you can listen to some of their guitar playing skills if you do not know it, and all you have to do is post who you think is the better guitarist of the two. After a day, the votes will be counted, and the winning guitarist will progress to the next round, until we only have 1 guitarist left as the winner at the end of the competition - who will take their place in the Band's Dream Band. It's very simple, so I look forward to seeing you getting involved!

So without further a-do, let the competition begin!

THE CHOSEN GUITARISTS

1. Eric Clapton

Simply one of the greatest guitar players ever! Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 3 times, he revolutionized guitar playing in the 1960s by making it the focal point of any band through a few simple moves - turning up the amp and moving the microphone. Blues influences his rock guitar playing, and he was ranked number 4 in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Classics that show off Clapton's playing include Layla and Steppin Out.

2. Dave Murray

Dave Murray is part of the original heavy metal band know as Iron Maiden. He is quite possibly one of the most influential metal guitarist of all time, laying down the foundation for all forms of metal to follow from progressive to death metal. Even Metallica and Megadeath came after Iron Maiden. All must bow down to Dave Murray!

3. Buckethead

Buckethead is a sick shredder who can destroy a guitar. He can play amazing and fast, and while he may not have the most eclectic of music, he does extremely well at what he does. Also, he took over as the lead guitarist of Guns N Roses for their new album. I have little doubt he could very well cross over into other types and styles of music.

4. Angus Young

He is simply the most amazing guitar player ever. He makes listeners grow goosebumbs with his power rifts. He is AWESOME.

5. Eddie Van Halen

Come on.....really? Okay, considering the fact that Eddie was originally going to be the drummer and Alex was going to be the guitarist, I'd say they made the right choice. Definitey a guitar ICON!!

6. Jimi Hendrix

One of the most amazing guitar players ever...and his live recordings are so much better than his studio work. According to Pete Townshend, "He had a kind of alchemist's ability; when he was on the stage, he changed".

7. Chuck Berry

An important star of the early development of rock and roll, with some impressive guitar skills. He was voted as the 6th best guitar player in Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists, and his playing definitely deserves such a high rank.

8. Mikael Akerfeldt

Revolutionized harmonization in the metal genre. was one of the first people in death metal to make the guitar more about harmonies and technique than about speed and heaviness.

9. Joe Satriani

Known for years as a prodigy, he is a bit eccentric, but never-the-less a guitar genius. With heavy influences of blues-rock from many other great guitarists, Satriani worked with a range of guitarists from many musical genres.

10. Dave Davies

The guitar playing of Dave Davies was the dynamo behind The Kinks. Their early hits contained Davies playing chords that are a rite of passage for any aspiring guitarist. His style was brash, aggressive and entirely unforgettable style.

11. Jimmy Page

Part of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page was at the forefront of guitar playing in the 1970s. From their first to last album, Page hasn't lost his technical authority. A wide variety of groups influenced Page before forming Led Zeppelin, including being a first-call studio musician, playing on Kinks and Everly Brothers dates and honing his production skills on singles for John Mayall and future Velvet Underground vocalist Nico.

12. Jeff Beck

One of the three great guitarists of the Yardbirds, Beck led the group's swing into R&B-charged psychedelia with his speed and deft manipulation of feedback and sustain. Later on, Beck would form his own group, a heavier variation on the Yardbirds that would prove influential for many later guitarists and groups. But it was in the 1970s that Beck reached his commercial height with an idiosyncratic style of jazz fusion that he continues to play today.

13. Carlos Santana

Santana's piercing pure tone is amongst the most recognizable sounds in popular music. He brought Latin rhythms and jazz improvisation to rock, and formed his own band in 1968. Various influences have styled his innovative approach. He is known as a fiery, impassioned soloist, and articulates fluid passages that culminate in lengthy sustained notes. He won a record equalling 8 Grammy Awards in 2000, and remains a compelling musician.

14. Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler is best known as the lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the British rock band Dire Straits. He emerged at a time when guitar virtuosos were spurned by punks and New Wavers. He's known for his rich tone, sinuous melodicism and rangy, fluid solos.

15. Brian May

Guitarist for the legendary glam rockers, Queen, as well as a having a PhD in Astrophysics from Imperial College, London. His flamboyant guitar playing for equal to lead singer Freddie Mercury in getting attention. May juiced the treble all the way for a clear and piercing tone, playing solos with grandeur and campy feather-boa humour, offering a counterpoint to Mercury's operatic falsetto, pushing glitter rock over the top until the sound was sheer heart attack.

16. Les Paul

Les Paul was a guitar inventor as well as a player. He was tinkering with electronics from an early age, and built the first solid-body electric guitar prototype. In 1952, Gibson began selling the Les Paul model, now a rock & roll standard. He also made a string of futuristic pop hits with wife Mary Ford in the early Fifties.

How does the SONGS portion work?  We vote two songs per guitarist that we think most shows their skill?

Apologies! I thought I had removed every reference to songs, but missed the most obvious!

I can not help it, my mind immidiatly starts comparing buckethead to Malmsteen, and once you go there, nothing about the bucket is in any way impressive. So, Chuck Berry.

a lot of people try to compare Buckethead to Malmsteen because of how fast they play. but Malmsteen is more of a sweeper and plays a lot of arpeggios while Buckethead uses a newer style and utilizes tapping and alternate picking more than sweeps. plus Malmsteen is just better than Buckethead.

Now that I have managed to drag myself away from Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook (gosh, I am seriously addicted to that game), that is an easy win for Eric Clapton as he progresses into Round 2 with a 6-1 win.

Time to get the 3rd tie of the 1st Round up.
