Firstly does anyone know what is wrong with Mr Rand's eyes? Cos I can't even begin to know i thought it might be the saa from Moridin/Ishamael but I was pointed to a quote that disproves that theory and secondly was anyone at all happy about Rand losing his hand, cos RJ really isn't a fan of him is he, two pools of pure evil in your side which is great for boasting and all that but must hurt like a ***** and now he's insane and losing his hand. Unlucky Rand

As to his eyes, well, he experienced an explosion literally at arm's length from his face.  His eyes were, unsurprisingly, damaged by that explosion.

Allow me to quote myself from another thread on this subject:

Symptoms of trauma induced cataracts include blurred vision, faded colour vision, sensitivity to bright light and halos.  Untreated cataracts can cause complete blindness.

Symptoms of trauma induced corneal abrasion include blurred vision, sensitivity to bright lights, and tearing of the eyes from the lacrimal gland.  Trauma induced corneal abrasion, not properly treated, can lead not only to infection, but to recurrent corneal abrasion, both of which can lead to blindness.

Retinal detachment can also be induced by trauma and lead to blindness.  Some of its early symptoms can include flashes of light, a decrease in vision, central vision loss and floaters.

Trauma can also lead to uevitis, which can lead to blindness.  Symptoms include blurred vision, sensitivity to light, dark, floating spots along the visual field, and eye pain.

In short, Rand's symptoms fit with a number of known trauma-induced degenerative eye conditions.  Blindness is a real possibility.  Rand has essentially all the symptoms of cataracts and uevitis, and retinal detachment is a real possibility as well.  An infection from corneal abrasion is a little less likely, but not impossible, and the other three are more than sufficient to make it a real possibility.

Thanks man, but are you sure Nyn couldn't heal that? i mean she could heal a whole inside someones head (stilling) i reckon it could also be something to do with the taint?

Actually we don't know if Nynaeve will be able to heal it. She said that she wouldn't try at that moment coz she would like to study it a little better before trying.... so she may be able to heal his eyes ^^

I don't believe you got your answer. His sight is bad, because of the taint in Saidin. That's gone now, but the damage is done and it will probably get worse.

I got the feeling that RJ had more sympathy with the supergirls (to whom everything works fantastic) than with the boys. Rand goes mad, sees badly, hears the voice of a madman, loses his hand and knows he has to die for the cause. Mat never gets away from Aes Sedai, gets tainted by a dangerous dagger, gets hanged, dies and lives again and sees fate sending him to marry a woman he would never choose for himself. Perrin gets to talk with wolves, gets caught between a dominant wife and a beautifull woman, finds his wife kidnapped, his family murdered en never seems to be able to control his life completely.

And the girls get all the cool stuff: enormous powers without getting mad, dreamwalking, healing stilling and gentling, making *angreals, becoming Amyrlin, becoming queen...

No, his retinas got burnt by the fireball (or possibly balefire) that Semi threw at him. It's unlikely to get worse, but it's unlikely to heal itself. Of all our body, our eyes are unfortunately unable to repair themselves.

Yeah, and Rand gets three beautiful women all devoted to him, becomes the most powerful man in the world, all three get more wealth than they could ever wish for. Mat has enough luck to see anyone through a lifetime, Perrin has a tool that no-one knows he has, plus a marriage to a potentially very powerful and undeniably intelligent woman and the alliance of one of the most canny rulers the wetlands have seen in a long time - whatever else she is, Berelain is an excellent ruler.

Pregnancy, poisoning, husbands with a deathwish, separation from those they love, power they can barely control but never surrender (both saidar and Egwene as the Amyrlin), are taken prisoner, poisoned (again), subjected to physical and mental abuse (Egwene again), have to send their husbands away on what could quite easily be his last ever journey (Nynaeve), have to drum up support for their husbands and his dead nation alone, and keep alive and sane the one man who can save the world... And frankly, i dont imagine Elayne will be walking in gardens of daisies when she becomes queen.

Rand does get 3 women.  That has to count for something.

i like this answer =)

Maybe rand was straining trying to look at all three of them and his eyes were just strained to the point that he can barely see. jk, dont take this seriously(ive seen it happen)

3 women = 3 Mother's in law usually...  I guess Rand is lucky in that regard after all...the only mother in law we know is alive is Morgase.

I think having her alone would be enough to kill him. Ahhhh i've got it, Rand get's through the Last Battle, kills every darkfriend and trolloc and bad person in the entire world then he goes home with Elayne and kills himself because of Morgase after half an hour.

They are taken prisoner again and again and again, because they're freaken morons.  Can you see any of the others like I know its a trap but... the best way to spring a trap is to walk into it knowing its a trap? What they did in tDR.

And to be honest I would rather be Rand than Perrin.  OK yah he's crazy, yah he's going blind, missing an arm, with two never unhealing wounds, and yah people try to kill him alot, not always DF.  But Perrin has Faile and her mom to deal with.

Hey but she is safe at least until her twins are born so it doesn't matter, she can do whatever she wants and kill off friends in the process.

I would rather be Perrin. At least Faile is reasonable most of the time and they rarely see her mother. It is no wonder that Rand is away from Caemlyn throughout all of book 11. All Elayne does is whine and moan for 100 pages. Good grief girl, shut the heck up!

Actually Rand may not be too bad. I would just spend all my time in the Waste and have Min tag along. Elayne will be so busy being queen and Aes Sedei that a occasional visit would be enough.

Besides, if Rand survives he gets less time with Min than he does Avi or Elayne...as far as I know.

This is what pisses me off about Elyane, she goes to take down some Black Ajah while under the impression she's invincible while still preggers. So in the process of getting these said Aes Sedai she ends up getting I think it was 4 Aes Sedai and all their warders killed. Plus how many of her guards killed rescuing her. I just think she should have taken more time to have thought out a plan to capture the Black Ajah then just walking in the front door like that. It's no wonder she kept falling into the "drink this tea, no really it's fine just drink it." trap.

It was three Aes Sedai, though Careane was Black Ajah so she probably shouldn't count.

But yeah, i have a problem with that too, especially when she thinks to herself that she wouldn't regret the attack because she knew Sareitha and Vandene would not allow Black to go free--as if her arrogance due to Min's viewing played no part in the failure.

Yeah but he couldn't move to avoid it cos Min would have been killed, so at least he takes the damage for himself and puts himself in harms way but i really think he should have gone holding the power you know?
