A Fiddalia Tale

 

 

The room was covered in shadow; the only light source came from a 40 watt bulb hanging from the ceiling that seemed to be one rapid flicking of the light switch away from being nothing more than an ornament.  In the center of the dim pool of light, a man sat, tied to a metal chair.  Fresh blood slowly flowed from his mouth, mingling with the dry blood that caked his face.  There was a shuffling of feet.  Then a man was revealed by the dim light.

 

“Tell me, Mr. Lombardi, what do you expect to happen?  Do you expect your goons to rush here to save you?”  The man wiped his nose; he was catching a cold.  It had gotten to the point where he wanted to just catch it, so he could throw it back.

 

The bloodied man in the chair didn’t answer.  He hadn’t said a word this entire time.  Sighing, the interrogator nodded to the shadows to his right.  Another man appeared.  This guy was big.  His arms looked like tree trunks.  His knuckles dripped blood – not his own.

 

“One last chance to end the pain, Mr. Lombardi.  Tell me what you know, and you can go back to your cell and lick your wounds.”

 

The captive began to shake.  He was laughing.  Lifting his head, the captive looked the interrogator in the eye.  “You think I’m intimidated by you and your sister over there?”  He spat a combination of saliva and blood at the interrogators feet.  “But I will tell you this, what happens next is because of you.  Because of you holding me.”  He began laughing again.

 

The interrogator kicked the captive in the chest, sending the chair backwards.  Then the interrogator jumped onto Lombardi and began choking him.

 

“Tell me what you know!  What is going to happen?  What!?!”

 

Light poured into the room as a door opened.  “Vennari, stop it!  We need him alive!”

 

Letting go of Lombardi, Sergeant Richard Vennari, stood up, trying to calm himself down. 

 

The woman at the door, nodded.  “Pick him up, clean him up, and get him ready for transfer.”

 

“What?” Vennari asked.  “Where is he being transferred?  Why?”

 

“The West District has gained custody.  That should answer all three questions.”

 

“But we have custody!  We caught him in our District!”

 

“What can I tell ya?  More damage has been done to the West than anywhere else in Fiddalia.  And he’s responsible, if Intel is correct.  It has been taken out of our hands.”

 

“Dammit, Captain, my brother –” Vennari began.

 

“We know, Sergeant!" Captain Rita Charles interrupted him.  "We all know.  I’m sorry.”

Officers Ridgefield and Clyde walked with the prisoner between them.  The street was cold, dark and silent, night was nearly over.  Three men stood at their destination.  When they got closer, Ridgefield noticed one was a woman, common mistake at night.  When they finally stood before the officers taking the prisoner for transfer, Ridgefield noticed something far more shocking than mistaking the gender of a fellow officer.  “Officer Makela?  What are you doing here?”

 

A gunshot broke the silence of the night and Clyde fell to the snow-packed earth.  Unable to comprehend what had just happened, Ridgefield just stared at the gun in Makela’s hand as it went off.

 

Makela found the keys in Ridgefield’s pocket and unlocked the prisoner from his restraints.

 

“Perfect, everything is going as planned.” Lombardi spoke out loud, but to himself.  Lombardi focused on the three who had freed him.  “I learned the hard way that if we want to see these societies fall, we need to topple the Law first.  Just play your part, and the money will be sent to your accounts.”

 

Makela bowed his head.  “Yes, Father.”

When day broke and the two officers who had been escorting the prisoner were found shot dead, chaos erupted in the Police Department.  The only people who had known about the transfer were cops.  A call to the West District found that the men chosen to pick up Lombardi had been found dead as well.  Cop-killers!  What made it worse was the fact that the cop-killers had to be cops themselves.
