Oh I don't have any inside knowledge.

I thought Buffy was not wanted anymore by the original studio. If the controlling studio wants out I can understand another studio jumping in and taking over it just feels wrong that decision is not in the control of the original studio.

You are conflating a distributor (broadcast network or streaming service) with a Production Company.

In the case of Buffy, the Production Companies behind it were Sandollar Television,  Mutant Enemy, Kuzui Enterprises, and 20th Century FOX Television. Warner Bros. Television bought the broadcast rights to the series, but had no involvement in it outside of distributing it via The WB.

The reason that the series moved to UPN is that WBTV didn't want to pay more to Sandollar, Mutant Enemy, and Co. to keep the broadcast rights.

But in this case Amazon is both production and distributor and does not have the IP rights locked down.

I understand that a distributor if displeased with return would move to drop a show and thus allow the production to look for another landing spot. But when you are both production and distribution to lose control of the IP especially considering the size of this IP feels very short sighted.

RJ sure didn’t make good decisions when it comes to licensing his IP.  It is infuriating that Red Eagle is still involved in this whole process.  I wonder if their greed is also keeping us from getting any WOT merchandise

On that front... It's hard to say?

Merchandise existed before the show came out, and I think they had existing contracts with the Jordan estate not with REE.

After show came out, SPT and Amazon entered the fray and they somehow or another were able to cancel everyone's pre-existing merchandising rights for whatever reason.

I don't know if REE would get any residuals from merchandising, or if they'd just get a flat check from SPT/Amazon for each merchandising effort. (That's all in the contracts we'll never see).

But given everything we might know of the situation, is that SPT and Amazon, were likely arguing over who/what/where and how much of the pie each got of the merchandising share.

Amazon being Amazon, likely wanted the biggest pie, since they could control the entire supply chain, while SPT likely wanted a bigger chunk since they had the licensing rights...

And if REE had any say, they likely wanted a cut because they want to fund their side hustles.

#7 on the originals list for today’s report.  538 million minutes, compared to 515m for season 2.
next week week the show has a real chance to exceed viewership for season 1 which was at 537m for the same period.  That would be a very impressive feat if it can be done.

I'm not sure, but I believe this is still referencing last weeks Nielsen chart, as that references this article from last week, April 17th.
https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/nielsen-streaming-top-10-adolescence-wicked-severance-ratings-1236372005/

That, or they just had earlier access to this weeks stats in said article, so I'm just a week ahead on my stats because I've already seen these stats since April 17th.

Either way, the real test for the show's Nielsen stats is going to be the week of March 24-30.

I think that will more accurately capture people who aren't catching up on the first 3 episodes they may have missed the prior Thursday, in addition to watching the new episode that current weekend.

It would also capture people who have actively just heard about the season (episode 4), and returning to the series, and binging it through to episode 5.

Assuming episode 4 is able to maintain the #7 spot, or surpass it, then it's going to see if it can sustain that for the rest of the season, or how long until it drops off before the Finale.

My guess is we will see a bump up to around the 500 level for s3e7 because its got a battle scene in it and then maybe around 530ish for the finale because they tend to get a bit extra because people tune in again to watch the last episode of the season even if they have skipped episodes.

But 470 is not good.

Ok, I'm confused.  Amazon spent $250 million for the rights to Wheel of Time.  Doesn't that mean they can make as many seasons as they want?

My understanding is that Amazon does not own the rights. They are licensing the rights from Sony, who has a production deal with iWoT/REE, who are the actual owners of the rights. (I think I have that right)

My understanding of the current situation is that Amazon's licensing deal with Sony is expired and that it requires Sony to recommit to the project or sell the rights. My guess, based on what I've read is that this has now become an opportunity for everyone to try to cash in.

Sony wants to focus on its own productions, so WoT is not high on its priority list. Of course, money talks, and Amazon will likely be able to convince Sony to renew the deal. The other possible play for Amazon (assuming they want the show to continue) is to purchase the production rights from Sony. But that's where iWot/REE has the opportunity to put their fingers in the pie.

At the end of the day, this is all about money right now. WoT is profitable for Amazon. It is more profitable than RoP - it's other tentpole fantasy franchise. I'm pretty confident that a deal will get done. We will probably get an announcement sometime around the end of Q2 or the beginning of Q3 is my prediction.

Man, finally watched Winter Dragon yesterday. What a piece of crap. I look forward to reading up on how Red Eagle scammed Jordan into buying the rights to WOT so I can better focus my anger.
