They do not kill without a veil, I know it's become popular over on the main reddit sub to pretend that changes aren't actually changes and act like it's what RJ intended all along but that doesn't make it true.

Tigraine as she was in the books would not have attempted to kill someone whilst not veiled, no Aiel would, to do so would bring them more shame then they could bare. Tigraine was an Aiel at this point, there was nothing left of her old wetlander self.

So yes it is a change to the lore no matter what and one that is fairly unnecessary given the role and who was cast.

That said from what we've seen and heard this is just one of many changes to both characters personalities, backstories, cultures, prop designs and even the general mechanics of the world so I think by the time we actually see this part in the show people will have reached acceptance that there's no point being upset by the changes anymore.

This is definitely the sort of change that I could see Sanderson objecting to due to the later effects of the story (it is a big deal actually even if it's only a few Aiel shown to do this because of how important it is to their culture, this is another thing that's popular on the main reddit sub at the moment, pretending important things that were changed were never important to begin with).

It's also the sort of change I could see Rafe refusing to budge over, since it means he can show Aiel faces whenever he wants to and doesn't have to worry about how to portray action scenes in a way that makes it clear who is who.

I don't think it's many people's take that an Aiel wouldn't kill a wetlander if their veil was somehow removed, therefore it is not a change to lore no matter what. I think they probably did change the lore in order to show her face, but I happen to not care. The fact they have veils means it's likely going to be rare. Not sure if it's gonna be black though.

I don't get why you're obsessing over her being a stunt woman. If she is Tigraine that is all that matters when it comes to showing her face or not. Unless you are arguing with someone who thinks the actor required her face to be shown.

Context is unnecessary in this situation. No Aiel would attempt to kill someone with their veil down (this is one of the most important aspects of their culture, even when running into battle naked they still find a way to veil themselves). Tigraine in canon dedicated herself to becoming an Aiel due to the foretelling she heard.

It's a change in the lore no matter what and a strange one given they cast a stuntwoman in the part and given that the role could've easily been portrayed without actually showing her face.

I'd put this down as likely being one of those changes that Sanderson disagreed with but Rafe decided he wanted to do anyway.

No, it's not a "change in the lore no matter what." The Aiel even have contests to try to remove someone else's veil. If a veil were to fall off during battle I'm sure they'd have toh, but without context you can't determine they changed the lore, yet. And again, she was born a wetlander.

I doubt this is a change Sanderson cared enough about to have been referring to it since it's not a big deal, unless they got rid of it completely.

I was making some pretty benign speculation.  I work about 80 hours a week in healthcare so I am constantly masking and unmasking in different situations.  It popped in my head that I do it unconsciously now like an Aiel before battle.  Then I thought oh crap that is kind of of horrific to equate masking with death. Pretty much purpose of this board is for us to over react to a TV show we mostly havent seen yet.  So I am sorry I have hurt your delicate feelings.  Guess Dragonmount has turned into another place I don't care to hang out.

The comment wasn't aimed at you. It was aimed at the people who went crazy immediately upon seeing this clip. I didn't have any problem with your post whatsoever.

  3. My thoughts:

    1. I'm tired of people going batshit over every little thing before they see the context around it when the show is so close and they can just go batshit when it comes out.

    2. It could have been pulled down during the fight by the person she's fighting.

    3. If it's Tigraine, she's a wetlander, so maybe she is less careful about putting it on or hasn't perfected the swift movement, especially if she wasn't planning to fight. She's presumably pregnant so I doubt she's out on the front lines.

    4. If it's Tigraine, her face will probably be important later - maybe a bad reason because they could have shown her before the fight starts than have her put it on.

    5. This is one Aiel. It doesn't mean they aren't wearing the veils. But it may be that the important characters occasionally have their faces showing while fighting.

Keeping Halima as just a normal darkfriend, not a reborn Forsaken, who happens to be male in a female body keeps 100% of the plot elements for Halima and trans without it being a punishment or anything.  On discovery, someone could say 'We know there have been people with this sort of spirit,  but never considered what it would mean if such people could channel.'  This changes being trans to a normal, but rare, aspect of society, lets that be known that it occurs, while keeping the essence of that plot (if they keep it).

I think this is ok as long as he is not the only trans person.

    Such great questions ? lol

The main thing I got from it is that she doesn't really know anything about the books, and Rafe pretty much let her do her own thing with the costumes based on her own interpretations of the characters and organizations (not RJ's)...

What gave you this idea? I mean, what she said about Cairhien is pretty spot on. It's influenced by France and Japan, which is exactly what she mentioned when talking about Cairhienin clothing.

I basically got the opposite impression.

  6. Quote

“But as time has passed, I’ve come to learn that we’re actually quite similar. Playing her has been quite therapeutic for me too, because of the way she is just so in charge of her emotions.

Hm. Hopefully we haven't lost the many erratic Nynaeve flying off the handle scenes.

My assumption is that gender dichotomy might have been considered an issue because it doesn't allow for trans individuals to exist. (This is if you assume that channeling and the soul link with identity rather than body, as discussed elsewhere. ) It would also not allow for any range in gender identity.

Halima is offensive not bc she is the only representation, but bc it is a punishment from the Dark One and clearly not natural

I fully understand the take on Halima and agree, and think the character should not be reborn. But this has made me wonder, because I know trans people but am not good friends with any, do trans people feel their biological sex is a mistake? I know this sounds like it has a totally obvious answer, but maybe there are some who feel it was a part of who they are that they wouldn’t change. But it makes me wonder if in an ideal world trans people actually wouldn’t exist, because everyone’s gender would match their biological sex so no one has to make changes to feel right. (But then I know not everyone has a binary biological sex either).

I highly doubt any of this entered RJ’s head when he was writing it. And I don’t think it’s a reason to not include trans characters. It’s just a thought I had.

I doubt they'll have Min's vision reveal it anyway, even in the books Min kind of lumps everyone together as being involved in the situation and her visions of Rand only really stand out because she's talking to him and goes more in-depth.

I think the reason is likely due to changing how the relationship stuff goes. Min being at Fal Dara means that after Rand and Egwene have made it back to each other and look like their relationship might work out, Min dropping the Rand and Egwene aren't meant to be thing will hit harder.

It also makes an easy transition into season 2 with Rand and Egwene separating and Min becoming Rand's love interest (assuming she travels with them going after the horn).

I mean there has to be a reason they cast Min in season 1 when she has little to do and won't become important for a while given that Elayne who becomes more important much faster and could've been moved to Tar Valon wasn't cast until season 2.

Good points here on Egwene. I can’t figure out what they’ll do with season 2. I hope the whole Seanchan thing is there. But I wonder if Rand will meet Elayne and Elaida before they reach Tar Valon or that will be cut out and he won’t meet Elayne until the end of the season after the battle. And maybe never meet Elaida, which would kinda suck. Unless she makes the journey to Fal Dara after dropping off Elayne. It could be that when the group is in Tar Valon in season 1, the Trakands are about to arrive there. That would make an Elaida trip to Fal Dara possible.

Hell they could even come up with an excuse for Elayne to come with - maybe the AS need some Novice assistance. That would also allow for the girls to get to know each other on the boat ride and maybe Elayne has been at the tower for a month and can help tell them what things are going to be like.

Min is in three episodes according to IMDb

I’m a bit surprised by that. Maybe they’re out of the Ways towards the end of episode 6 but it seems like a lot to put into 1 episode since there should be a bunch of WT stuff.

  9. It's really hard to say.

In the books my least fav was Mat and Rand after Thom was gone and before Rand fell over the wall. I think that's going to be pretty dark in the TV show also. It would be nice if they put something in that only Rand sees in Tar Valon. Maybe he bumps into some Aes Sedai on the street or something.

I can't decide between the other 2, but since Logain will be heavily involved in the Nynaeve, Moiraine, Lan story, that could be pretty exciting since we don't know exactly what will happen. Perrin and Egwene I already know will be exciting if it's anything like the book.

I so want it to be good, but I have to say the previews make me worried the might of went away from the books too much and added their own stuff.  So I'm hoping but deep down I'm worried.  I always worry when books are made into movies since so much gets left out.  I just don't want them to try and cater the series to people new to WOT and not the fans.

They have to try to cater the series to people new to WOT. They will probably consist of 95% of the viewers or more. That said the argument is always that they could do that by sticking closely to the source material. They have to decide whether they think that's the case and have obviously made some changes.

Noriv al Zaffid gives an example of a non vocal track and its quite lovely. Im curious what scene it will be from. Hopefully some cool scene showing the ancient symbol of the Aes Sedai. (Two Halves One Whole)

Maybe when they're dealing with Logain.

  12. This is the type of rumor that will never be verified, so imo the conversation has no real purpose and potentially shouldn't be allowed.

That said agreed with others. You don't just suddenly decide to make Mat gay or bi and never bothered to find out if your actor is the type who would refuse to film the scenes. Nor does the showrunner then rave about you in interviews after leaving for such a lame reason, especially when he is gay himself. They went a couple months without even mentioning him - it isn't necessary to bring him up now and Rafe wouldn't do that if he left due to this.

This sounds more like another stupid rumor birthed from the nightmares of homophobes.

it makes everything much worse when you start degendering souls and by extension the OP ... Halima was the Exception and the ONLY exception to a woman channeling the male half .... you remove her and STILL play with that ball .... thats slippery slope with a a deep dark hole

There's been 0 evidence we'll have men channeling saidar or women channeling saidin or women affected by the taint. I'm not sure why you're basing comments off of a belief we have no evidence of. It's a weird thing to be afraid of and spend so much time talking about.

Ye I don't see Balthamel coming back. Aginor as well seems unlikely. Ishamael I don't see how you can discard. Lanfear probably as well but not as vital.

I feel they have to make the ones they keep around far more bad ass though. Not sure how you do that and keep the mains all alive. Maybe build up some of the secondary characters that die a bit more. That said I don't want them to try to make this like GoT.

  15. 1 minute ago, MasterAblar said:

There's no proof they've removed saidin and saidar. All that is confirmed is that souls are no longer gendered, and therefore in the case of channellers a soul is no longer tied to saidin or saidar.

Logically then, saidin or saidar is tied to the body the soul is in. How that impacts Arangar is unknown but I would guess she is unlikely to appear in the show.

My guess is Balthamel dies and stays dead. Halima didn't do much in the end that I think is worth including in the show. I still think they will bring back some to increase tension, but I doubt it'll happen as often.

  16. 4 minutes ago, Wraith235 said:

the way you get from point A to point B- at least for me is the other quotes from Rafe regarding the de-gendering of souls - the MOMENT you say that the dragon has been female in ages past you de-gender the OP .... I have speculated that this may have been a point of contention simply due to the gravity of the change

If the dragon has been female in the past, it's far more likely they will make the One Power tied to biological sex rather than the soul. So if Egwene were LTT reborn, she would channel saidar (or not channel). If they take out saidar/saidin, then she would channel but not be affected by the taint due to the fact she was born a woman.
