I don't recall that either Elaida or Siuan were appointed with the premise that they would be figureheads. Siuan was appointed because of her competence, and Elaida was almost "self-appointed", as she led the coup against Siuan.
What we learn from the histories is that some Amyrlin's couldn't cut it, and were reduced down to being figureheads.

because a vocal minority can't get over the fact that fictional characters can be other than white. I like being here and discussing news and stuff but it's getting tiring ignoring the complaints from the same people that boil down to I can't stand that X,Y,Z are black, asian etc. However, I have to invent other reasons.
I have kept quiet up till now, because I realise that racism is a very real and bad thing, that this is a sensitive matter, where thoughts can easily be misconstrued, and I come from a country where an accusation of racism can get me thrown into jail.
But really, this is too much.
Mistborn82, I find that comment to be willfully ignorant, arrogant, offensive and possibly slanderous.
Yes, of course there are those types as you mentioned, but there is a kind of bullying being established here that I find just as offensive as racism.
It's come to a point that one can't give anything other than a "yes man" comment for fear of being accused of racism!
Do I disagree with some of the choices in characters thus far, because they diverge from descriptions in the books? Yes I do.
Why? Because I don't agree with the justifications for them.
But here's the thing. Will I disagree if they start casting "paler" people in what the books describe as "darker"? Yes I will!
I will be VERY upset if they suddenly cast Tuon as a different "race" (read Whitewashing) to what she is in the books. I think it's a very profound moment for many people when they realise that the Heir to the mightiest empire in the world is a black woman. I think it does a massive amount to redress the balance a bit when compared to most of the contemporary fantasy fiction out there.
Same goes for Banner-General Tylee Khirgan.
This is one of the reasons I wasn't very happy with the casting of Moiraine. Though I absolutely adore Rosamund Pike, I think it skirts a bit close to the above. Did they really have to cast a tall, blue eyed blonde to play the role?
I'm not going to drag this out by mentioning every single character but I am going to ask you to think about what you post before you just throw accusations around. Make sure your accusations are true, before you brand someone.

Hi BessHB, and welcome!
Are you a Wheel of Time fan?

The basis of Robert Jordan's world building is that it's grounded in science. There is much less "random magic" like Harry Potter, and much more "hey that could maybe just be possible if we humans evolved a bit" like Anne McCaffrey's Pegasus series (where humans can use kinetic abilities, etc).
Simply put, the ability to wield the One Power and form weaves is a well thought out "science". The one part where it fails, is the Healing part.
For instance, it's mentioned several times that the "current" method of Healing is basically one single Weave. Some can do it well, and some don't have much ability to do it.
To quote WoT Wiki:
QuoteAccording to Cadsuane Melaidhrin, she is the best Healer among living Aes Sedai and the best that the Tower has seen in centuries, perhaps ever[3]. She has the ability to modulate perfectly the strength of the Healing weave accordingly to necessity (which very few people can do), meaning she can control the extent to which Healing will heal a person (and the amount of energy it will cost that person's body). This is very useful for dealing with life-threatening injuries, as shown when she Healed [spoiler] (if she had used too strong a weave, he would have been killed by the shock). She has also the same ability with Healing as a full circle.
So. One Weave. Why does it then take them years and years of studying, to learn ONE Weave??
Makes no sense.
There's more, but I'm out of time for now ?

In China we have a saying for people like Nynaeve: She's eaten gunpowder.
Oh my word that describes her perfectly! ?
I think another thing is also that the act of Healing is one of Robert Jordan's worst thought out things. If you really sit down and think about it (like we extremely nerdy Role Players did), it doesn't really make sense. Things got a bit backwards, in my opinion.

I'm on Chapter 9 of EotW
So early days yet! What prompted you to seek out a Wheel of Time Community?
-
@B.MusallThat's wonderful! How far into the series have you read?
-
@windranger900 Take your time! The series will take quite a few years still to reach the latter books, and you don't want to miss anything because you're reading fast ?

Purely for sentimental value, if I had that amount of money lying around I would have paid it too.

Welcome to the White Tower & Warders Social Group!
The term "Aes Sedai" means "Servants of All" in the Old Tongue. The White Tower and Warders Social Group has used the philosophy of Servants of All to create a social setting based on the hierarchy, purpose and set-up of the White Tower and Warders in the WoT series. This inspires the way in which we interact and some of the activities which we organize, although we are a social community and not a role playing group.
How do I join?Easy! Click this, then click this button
Or find us on the Club menu below:
Do I need to join the club to post?
You do need to "join" the Club to post in it, yes. But you don't need to sign up to follow the path of Aes Sedai or Warders to just hang around and have fun with us here at the Club.
We also need you to read this thread before posting anywhere in the Club. You don't want an Aes Sedai to Balefire you for stealing her Kaf, or something! And Bob is dangerous to the uninitiated.
What do I get if I join the club?
You get to maybe one day call yourself Aes Sedai or Warder!
Why should I join the club?
We offer people of varying common interests - related to the books or otherwise - a chance to find their niche with like minded people in one of the Ajahs or the Warders guild. Whether you become a Warder or an Aes Sedai (here males can be Aes Sedai and females can be Warders), at the White Tower and Warders Social Group, you can live out that philosophy and have fun doing it!
Are there any Activities? Points? Ranks?
There are indeed!
When you join, you will normally choose the path of either the Aes Sedai or the path of the Warder (if you're unsure which way to go, you can take your time to decide - no pressure.)
If you choose the path of the Aes Sedai, you will first become a novice, and then and Accepted, before finally choosing your Ajah and being Raised to Aes Sedai.
If you choose the path of the Warder, you will first become an algai, then a Manshima, and finally choose your Discipline before being Promoted to Der'Manshima.
There will be all kinds of Events, Pranks, Threads, Discussions. Aspirants (Novices, Algai, Accepted, Manshima) will join in classes and events and maybe even do tasks in order to fulfill their Raising Requirements.
Full Ranking Members (Aes Sedai & Der'Manshima) can also do various things to earn Points.

Wonderful! We'll be looking forward to it ?

Ciao! Va bene, grazie ?
I think most of us adore Moiraine. You should come on over to the White Tower And Warders Social Club - I think you'll like it there.

Benvenuto, Skelos! Come stai?
I'm from Cape Town in South Africa, and English isn't my first language either. Your English is very good!
If I may ask, do you have any favourite characters or groups of people in the books?

Man, everyone lives on the other side of the country from me! My Koeksussie came from that area too, if I recall correctly.
I got mine from Exclusive books too ?
So anyhoo, I hope you'll stick around here and join in - there are lots of areas to explore. There's the book discussions, obviously, but also Role Playing and then the Social Side, where we pretend we're really Aes Sedai or Wolfkin or Aiel ?
Naah we're not quite that crazy (shut up, we are!) but we like to hang out in a social setting with other people who also love the WoT.

Hello PRH formerly from South Africa! I'm from Cape Town (and still living there - which part of SA are you from?)
Anyhoo, yeah I think you might be getting a bit confused. I've read these books from when they were first published, and the older ones up to 30 times (yeah I'm obsessed), and that never happened. Vandene was grief-stricken, not guilt-stricken by the death of her sister. She later avenged her. There was a Black Ajah member with them. Another one also shielded the Dragkar, but again it wasn't Vandene. The Trollocs weren't let into Emonds Field by the Black Ajah, as far as I can recall. I don't want to give away too much info here (spoiler alert).

Could they have genderswapped Narg and that's Leyla.
... did you not know that Narg is female? That's why she was sent to talk to Rand. All the boy Trollocs were just grunting "me smash!".

Amazing voice? Not quite sure what you mean by that one. He has a deep distinctive voice and has done some Video game voiceover but as far as i know he is not well known for his voice.
... maybe it's a woman thing? That man could recite the dictionary to me and I'd be enslaved ?

Welcome to Dragonmount, Vance ?
I'm nowhere else - I'm just the Amyrlin here at the White Tower & Warders Social Group. You're welcome to pop by there, and even join up if you find it interesting!

Michael McHelhatton will of course be immediately recognisable to many Fantasy Fans due to his portrayal as Roose Bolton in Game of Thrones.
He's the one with the amazing voice, right? I was hoping they'd make him Thom, because he could certainly mesmerize an audience with some story in High Chant. But at least he's playing one of my favourite characters.

*Eyes suspiciously, then hitches her seven striped stole up* ... Welcome to Dragonmount, Jax. Might we be seeing you over at the White Tower and Warders?
Is every Amyrlin Seat just a figurehead, nothing more?

You make a good point there. But the Black Ajah is not the Tower, or individual Aes Sedai - they're a whole sub-group with its own agenda.
