It must have been programmed that way ... why???

Have you ever wondered why computers / programs do certain things? And why? I mean we all know that computers / programs don't just up and do something all by themselves - someone set it that way, or programmed it that way, or wrote the program that way.

Why??

Example:

Every time I open anything in a PDF file, it opens it at 181%.

181%

WTF?? Why????

Who on earth decided that that is the optimal size to open a pdf file at??

So what's your gripe?

And another thing ...

A few days ago some little elf somewhere decided that when I open an excel file, it's going to open it at the bottom of the monitor only (half-view). But only if excel isn't open yet, mind! Any subsequent files I open are opened in full. Until the next time I close all files.

Why???? :huh::wacko:

Who sat somewhere at a Microsoft office and decided that after Excel has been used for 20 374 days, 22 hours 47 minutes and 12 seconds, files must suddenly open up that way every time that it's the first file I open?

Or maybe it's if I look to the left while punching numbers into my calculator on the right. Or whatever criteria (other than me deliberately setting it that way, of course!!!) he/she/it decided would trigger the above change in how an excel file opens.

Software only does exactly what you tell it to do. Unless it's NDA code, which, actually, still does what you tell it to do, expect that it determins what to do based off current input and the output of previous actions in terms of how far the oberserved result differed from the desired result.

But, as long as we are ranting:

I'm a lefty, and I like my solution explorer on the left, I also use breakpoints as bookmarks, so I like to have the breakpoint window open when in code/designer mode as well so I can more easily navigate the code base. However, sometimes when visual studio closes, it forgets these configurations and reverts to the default right-pane solution browser, split bar debug window, and hidden breakpoints in designer mode.

I'm 98% sure this is because studio is writing the preferences to a config file on close, and if the close isn't successful, the "previous run" config file is missing and it loads from the standard template. What I want to know is where is that template so I can modify that?

Yes I know - I used to program, back in the days when DOS was in use. Fun times. But that's why I'm asking, who the hell is programming this shit in that way. It's nuts.

Font size. Why, oh why, when I open web sites they are in what appears to be 3-point font? Okay, I exaggerate, but still.

How do I change the default zoom of my browser to 125% so that I don't have to zoom every page, every time?

And Kukaso has AutoCAD . . . I'm envious . . .! I was trying to get it for ages but there was a disconnect between our intranet and AutoCAD. They may have it fixed now but now that I'm Lead SE, when I need stuff like that done, I have to just delegate it to our young engineer and have him do it in SolidWords. I'm too busy to do fun stuff any more plus our project doesn't have enough money to buy me the fun toys . . . er, I mean tools . . . engineers need. *sighs*

Mainly I say this to myself when debugging, frequently followed by "who the &^%*&^% wrote this!"

"oh, right, me!"

Usually Ctrl + will do the trick. It should stay that way forever and ever, too, until you hit Ctrl - (minus).

There are so many things... I'm a nurse and I work in IT and my main job is babysitting i mean... negotiating... i mean... ummm appeasing the physicians at our hospital and there are so, SO many things... Today we had a MD call and say he couldn't sign off on his transcriptions and when I went up there they were opening minimized... but he couldn't figure out how to get it unminimized (by clicking the blinking icon at the bottom of the computer screen) and then wanted it fixed RIGHT THEN. which I can't do... lol and I'm full of responses like: "I don't know why it does that. Nope it's new.. never seen it before. No we didn't do this intentionally" BLAH

also if you use chrome and have the latest version there is a magnifying glass next to the favorites star on the top right side of the search bar:

It's like this but it has a plus sign in it and the search bar is square not rounded and there's a star not an x and its google chrome.
