It had something to do with the characters (especially the female) not being "holy" enough? Ie depicted too "realistically" or something.

 

Definitely not THE Michelangelo, so I presume Caravagio (sp?)

Caravaggio is correct! And Yes!, the young lady who posed as Mary (the mother of Jesus) was indeed not holy by any means. She was a prostitute!
