Voting format discussion

first up if this has been discussed before tell me and i will shut up

ok so lately mods seem to be using various formats for people to post their votes in games. some want the classic Red and Bold some want just Bold and some want ## of various amounts in front of a bolded word  ##dice. Some want you to actually say VOTE so and so sometimes with #  vote dice thisseems to just be bolded not red.

So i have been having some problems with this. I am a classic Red and Bold person for 3 reasons.

1 Vision. I wear coke bottle glasses and have a vision problem. The various forms that are not red are very hard for me to see. Particularly if it is in the middle of a post with a lot of words.

2  When im doing a hurried skim for votes right before deadline Red and bold stand out. Ive heard mods say they like a particular format cause it stands out to them

3  Im lynching people here    red seems appropriate lol

Besides these reasons all these different ways to vote make it hard for players. Especially if they are in 4 games at once. A crucial vote may not be counted cause they mixed up the different styles.

I guess what id like to see is discussion around this, what peoples preferred style is and perhaps discussion or even a decision towards making it one style   or not   across the board

Thoughts?

As a mod, as long as it stands out to me visually and it is clear you intended it to be a vote, I don't so much care about formatting.

As a player I'm used to the red/bold format although it's a pain to code when playing on mobile. I appreciate flexibility from the mod if they aren't requiring the red/bold format, because sometimes I will forget if they ask for something else.

Sticking with the accepted and traditional protocol best serves the games.

Many of us play in multiple games at time.  Recently in 3 games there were 3 different voting methods and this a bit difficult to keep straight.

Why put undo pressure on the players for the sake of a whim?

Mods should be limiting unintended consequences..not fostering actions that increase them.

I prefer bold red but I tend to just do bold these days because more people prefer it.

I've also been missing votes on occasion fwiw.

I don't think there should be any kind of rule though.

Hmm, don't see the problem. I get the hashtag-thing as it eases the mod-work, I think voting with red is good because it makes it easier for players re-reading to skim and still catch all the votes. But generally I don't see the problem in following the game rules, even if they vary between games.

##Vote Dice

Cloud's scum. He's going to fake claim doc soon.

As for the voting thing, as a mod I prefer just plain old bold. I don't really care for the red and as long as the vote is not in the middle of a block of text then it's easy to see the bolded vote. The hashtags seem overkill, but I think some people search the topic for them so they don't miss any votes.

The double hashtag thing DOES make it super convenient to find votes so is helpful for the mods, but I think it is a fair point brought up in this thread, that if you're in multiple games at once with different voting formats, it can easily lead to disaster.

Unfortunately, this also kinda seems like an issue that comes with the territory- as in, you won't really experience this problem UNLESS you sign up for more than one game. For instance, it's also kinda easy to mix up games when a lot of players are in more than one together, but you can't really expect others to limit their docket if you're not.

So eh, I'd say tie goes to the mods. Let them do w/e voting format they want, if it's a PITA let em know cause any good mod should welcome constructive criticism, and if they seem like "my way or the highway" and you don't like it, don't sign up for their games.

Done, and done.

need vote button.

make easy peasy.

bold red was Dms vote default until players brought in foreign influences. not that there's anything wrong with that.

not sure how searching for ## helps when the search wants three characters but Okies.

vote button is good. or vote code. make it so?

it's hard to count when they're not red tho cause blind.

Honestly I think vote tags are coming eventually next time the site updates. It's a relatively easy addition and I think Verb is lobbying for it.

Before there was ever bold red, there was the GLOW button. It was basically the vote tags of it's time. It made it stand out like almost too much. Was all sparkly and schtuff. I think vote tags like the ones on Vendetta Strada are better (they change the font and make the text really big, that's it).

The mods that use the ## don't use the search function, that would be kind ridiculous as you'd have to figure out the chronological votes out of those from past days. They use ctrl-F, which pretty much every browser worth its salt has, a function which lets you search for any text on the page. There is no minimum character limit for that.

ah. I don't have an easy thread search on the iPad. I visually scan.

if it was three hashtags you could easily use the sites search so I never understood why two...

yay vote tags!

can they tabulate like a poll too?

that would be neat :)

buy not like a poll where you can't tell if ppl deleted and revoted but something that auto posts the new vc when anyone voted or unvotes.

That's a pretty awesome and clever concept... something tells me it would be somewhat difficult to execute tho. That would be awesome tho, you could even make a randomizer for roles and ... something... that resolves NA's and you wouldn't even need a mod! Roflmao. Except to have someone to whine to and annoy and read awesome scenes from

Dunno if vote tags are actually happening btw lol, don't get your hopes up and then come with a mob looking to lynch me hehe.

The site's search mechanic isn't terrible, but it's not perfect either. I don't think using it would be a practical way to gather votes for vote counts.

(you can search only for a certain time period btw or just have them post descending order and go back to your last vc)

still not perfect tho- if you waited a while between last VC and there were a bunch of votes, it might go over a page and then it isn't perfectly chronological anymore.

Ctrl-F MUCH MUCH easier and faster. Neither are necessary tho, just convenient.

there's no control f on apple. no control nuffin. that's windows stuff.

last game I just babysat the thread and updated the vc often as I could but I won't be able to do that next time.

I don't think the auto vc would actually be so difficult cause I seen govt programmers write stuff like that and they ... are very very very not good at what they do.

but ya, mods prerogative tho I personally find Bold red easiest.

if I was using search I would have the word vote included and the search would pick up vote and unvote.

I don't like the idea of taking anything that looks like a vote as a vote cause that dumbs things down and takes away all the sneaky uses of the vote fail. it's like mafia w training wheels.

tho vote tags might do the same thing unless......... someone mimicked the vote tags effect to make it look the same but not be the same.

I like to watch deviousness.

You have command+F (cmd, next to the space bar), Cindy (or apple+f if you have an older mac, same button, they just removed the apple). Almost everything that is ctrl+ is cmd+ on a mac (copy/paste i.e.)

I tend to be a traditionalist. I like the bold and red. I can deal with the plain bold but don't like it when a mod will refuse to accept any votes with the red. What really grinds my gears is when a player will get all pissy over their vote not being counted when it isn't properly formatted. Really? How do I know that you aren't deliberately vote failing as a ploy? The last few games I have modded this has happened and it's getting really annoying.

Oh and glow was idiotic. Glow was moronic. I wasn't on DM when we used it but I have been in games on Myndjack. I found it hard to read and often had to mouseover text that was glowed. My first reaction to glow was WTF is this garbage. Glad we don't use it anymore.
