somthing i just found out/realized south park did that two part epis about depicting mohamad, and it was censored by Comedy Central, because depicting mohamad was going to piss off terrorists or some such. they did the 'super best friends' epis, where mohamad, along with representatives from every religion fight david blane. they werent ugly like the guy in denmark who drew him with a bomb for a turbin, he was saving the world and all.

while typing this i realized that this epis aired in 01. 7/4/01. i was hoping that it occured after 9/11...i wonder?

i realize this isnt anime, but it is animated...sorry.

nonono, not the boondocks. it is something they show on spike... wish i could remember the name. i will look for it. edit: it is called afro samurai. *details*

as for the akira thing, they didn't try to bring akira back or anything... they tried to make the same type of events happen (continue on) with another character... it has been so long, i don't remember if it was a new or old though.

flcl is so off, it is hilarious. i might need to leave it at that

I still can´t convince my friend at work that animé ain´t something just for kids.

I don´t know but that is still the general opinion here in Sweden.

Just watch 10 minutes of Ghost in the Shell and tell me that it´s a kid movie!

Or maybe I´m getting old and splattering someones brain out, assasination style, is common in todays children movies.

It seem that for the general population in Sweden, animé is Pokémon, Yu-gi-Oh and Dragon Ball Z. Nothing bad against those shows, they are probably great shows (I haven´t seen more that bits and pieces), but they give a somewhat twisted idea of animé is if those are the only thing you´ve seen.

But maybe there is a change in the air.

Swedish cinema showed Spirited Away and Howl´s Moving Castle a few years back.

I didn´t have time to go and see them and I dread that they dubbed them to swedish. But they showed them and they where pretty popular. So maybe, just maybe, there will be a change in how people percive animé and it will be accepted as something else than just kiddie-movies

The future will tell, I guess.

first and foremost, its not just sweeden that does that. thats exactly how it is in the states. its getting better now that a major brodcasting company is playing good anime.

seccondly dbz, pokemon, and yu-gi-oh were never good. they're really repetative, and the animation is horrible, at best.

and Alys, i think your discription of FLCL hit the nail on the head. you really cant say anything else about it. a language complex enough to describe FLCL doesnt exist, and probably wont.

I totally agree. However, I do think its decreased a lot, since now some people have seen the "REAL" anime. For example, the movies such as "Howl's Moving Castle" (also nominated for an oscar in previous year), and "Spirited Away" (I think it was an oscar winner) really showed that Anime does not equal Pokemon.

i think the reason that adult swim was created was to show the american public that there is such thing as adult cartoons. (not pornographic, just not for children) they have real value as far as animation quality, and ideas expressed. the problem was convincing teens and adults that cartoons are not just for kids. for crying out loud dbz and pokemon were originally intended for people from 13-17, not 6-9. there is a lot of sexual inuendo in these shows that was edited out because the audience that would watch it were significantly younger than the originaly intended audience (this is with respect for countries other than japan. i get the feeling that in japan the targets of the shows watch the shows so the editing isnt implemented there. at least thats how i understand it.)

I usually like the dubbed version of the anime I own, mostly because the japanese voices are often times very annoying.

As for the general anime such as pokemon and Dbz, I wouldn't consider those as much as anime as I would other shows. However I think that most of the anime now being produced is complete shit. I mean, the use of computers as made anime very simplistic looking. I prefer anything from the 90's. Even the new gundam(SEED) looked horrible because of it's crappy animation.

well, jack, that is why i didn't add more to the description. i tried, but the words didn't work. :D

and it all depends on how you look at it, quarantined... the ff's have the anime appearance, but they are most definately cg, and i can't help but point out that alot of people, myself included, like that style. especially advent children. then you watch the e-surance commercials, and it all dies. or the attempt that kill bill made. i hated that. *shrugs*

Oh snap! Completely forgot about this one, and was listening to npr when the name poped up. (apparently its a senators last name)

Armatage III. its very Ghost-in-the-Shell-esque. Very Pretty

Oh boy I loved Advent Children. I had absolutely no friggin idea what was going on...7 was too darn long for my taste, but at least it wasnt 5. This movie is a visual orgasm. Honestly I'll count FF7:AC as anime. It follows all laws of anime. It being cgi is the only difference from typical anime. Everything about it screams anime...*shrug*

This is a thread for anime appreciation :D

I just finished watching beserk and it was such a good series' date=' it had such a good ending. I must say i do prefer the manga even tho i havnt read a great deal of it.[/quote']

I have really grown to appreciate the style and Anime as an art form. I think its a really neat way to get a point across. You can do a lot in terms of flow of action.

I enjoy Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, and watched the Big O... by the way, does Vampire Hunter D qualify as Anime? either way, I enjoyed that too. 8)

Hope you don't mind a newcomer joining in.

I've been a fan of anime for a good few years now. My favourites include Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, anything by Miyazaki/Ghibli, El Hazard, Legend of the Four Kings, the list is endless.

It always makes me smile that some people think of anime as being "just for kids". If they'd seen a certain couple of titles, they'd know how wrong they were. Anime is just like the western film industry - they have films made for all types of audiences. Mind you, whatever people thought, I've always enjoyed it.

In all honesty I cannot put up with any American animes. Except Avatar.

All the anime I watch is in Japanese with subs, and if I do watch it on Adult Swim, it's just to laugh at how they translate and change things.

It's really amazing how the original DBZ is different from the American. Also, did anyone know that Pokemon is rated R in Japan? I heard it somewhere. Supposedly for Violence, Sexual Content and Language. Amazed me, though I'm not sure if it's true.

As far as anime, I can get used to anything, really, though my favorites would have to be:

Chrno Crusade, Ichigo 100%, DearS, Bleach, Naruto, Zero no Tsukaima, and many, many others. Unfortunately, I've yet to find an anime with a good ending. Most endings make me cry or depress me... I guess it's because it is the end.
