Favorite Tabletop Game?

I'll have to go with the classics based on great memories: Monopoly and Risk. Clue was another big one growing up. Also enjoy Axis and Allies as well as the one time I played Settlers. Also have Ticket to Ride on my iPhone.

I quite enjoy table-top games and party games in general. Just need to find more like-minded people.

Monopoly: play by the rules not how most people play. Risk: too much comes down to dice, generally you need to add some rules to army placement to make it a decent game.

Suggestions:

- Munchkin, Munchkin, Munchkin (be careful of adding too many cards, the balance easily goes to hell). Haven't tried the board game or the RPG (basic Munchkin, the pirate themed one or the cowboy themed one are probably the best balanced and like I said, be cautious about what you add to the game). http://www.worldofmunchkin.com/

- Wizwar. Gamesworkshop sporadically releases, can be hard to get a hold of but very worthwhile.

- Plenty of the Cheap-Ass games are great. Kill Doctor Lucky for example (the reverse of clue, you have to get Dr Lucky somewhere unobserved by the other players to kill him).

- I much preferred Shogun to Axis and Allies or Conquest of the Empire, but that one is more complicated and longer. There's a decent Axis and Allies style game engine in java you all can try, playing a few games on that should show you what's wrong with A&A as a game: http://triplea.sourceforge.net/mywiki

Perhaps decent:

- Walking Dead board game: only tried once or twice, but there seems to be something there. Haven't found the right rules adjustments to make it as good as the above.

- Talisman (old as wizwar)...might be something there, but really tedious, imbalanced and horribly luck-based. Supposedly there's expansions that make it better, but haven't seen in person.

I heard ticket to ride is good. I think Misery is the next one I'm going to pick up.

It is definitely a great game..

Want to make the game better?

Get a guy that's drunk, who's goal, isn't to get the longest train, but to draw the figure 8 on the map.. Right dab in the middle of the playfield.

Its so stupid, Its brilliant!

Chrononauts:  Messing with time and changing history can never go wrong!  I have a friend whose only goal during the game is to change time so the Statue of Liberty actually becomes the Statue of Freedom (a woman riding a lion, with an eagle on her shoulder)

Betrayal at the House on the Hill:  Explore a manor with random rooms, gather items until the haunt begins and a traitor is revealed among the players.  The traitor has unique abilities and is the enemy of the others.  It's a huge amount of fun, since you have no way of knowing in advance who is the traitor or when the haunt begins.

Nuts:  Each player is a squirrel trying to gather a horde of 20 nuts, either by accumulating a horde or stealing from each other.  Sense of humor required, as the cards have more than a little innuendo thrown in.

Apples to Apples or Cards Against Humanity, depending on your age and sense of humor.

Shadows over Camelot:  Become one of the knights of the round table (or king arthur himself) and defend the kingdom against siege from Picts and Saxons alike, hunt for Excalibur and the Holy Grail, all while one player seeks to sabotage the others from the shadows as a pre-determined traitor.

And of course, the ever-enjoyable Dungeons and Dragons.

Hmm. Only played Shadows once but I had a good time with it. DnD is of course always king, though I prefer the white wolf system.

My husband and I love tabletop games, and are always looking for good games that can be played by just two, but that's also enjoyable in bigger groups. Our current favourite is Carcassonne, it's a kinda of boardgame. It has several expansions so you can play with one or more at a time to get a different game each time. It's super fun.

We also play a card game, called Dominion. And last week we bought a new card game called Gloom; the goal is to make your family as miserable as possible before killing them off, and of course messing with your opponents score

I don't play a huge variety of tabletop games, but I've been having fun playing a few games with friends recently after watching an episode of Tabletop over at geekandsundry. Which games do you guys play? Currently I play Settlers of Catan a fair amount and i love it. Suggestions?

It's kind of important to know what kind of games you like because there are a lot of categories, genres, etc.

I mean do you like trying score the most points? Do you like party games where people say funny things or tell funny stories? Do you like player negotiation and trading? Do you like mimicking war and moving troops around a board? Do you like push your luck games? I mean I could go on naming things but it's hard to recommend games without knowing what you like.

Maybe you don't know what you like. That's ok.

I don't know what Tabletop or geekandsundry is but I've heard the names and I have a pretty good idea of what they probably do.

Personally I like to watch Tom Vassel review games on youtube for the Dice Tower. That's how I learned a lot about boardgames even though I haven't really played too many myself.

Their top 10 videos are great if you've got an hour to kill.

Anyway if you like Catan there's a good chance you'll like Puerto Rico or Agricola.

I've never played either of those but IIRC they have a theme of gaining resources and trading.

They're pretty popular so that's why I'm recommending them it's not from personal experience.

Some games I have played and enjoyed was Cards Against Humanity which is basically an adult (emphasis on the NSFW here) version of apples to apples, Dominion which is a deckbuilding game similarish to Magic The Gathering except you don't trade cards or try to kill your opponents, and Wits & Wagers which is a trivia game where the players all guess the answer and then people gamble chips on who they think is right or closest to right.

Some games I want to buy/play but haven't yet are Lifeboats which I think isn't in print currently, Cosmic Encounter, Smallworld, and Twilight Struggle.

Hope that gives you some direction!

Personally I prefer Ascension over Dominion.  Gives more options to win, and it's a little more random so that it's harder for one player to pull out miles ahead of the others.  Dominion has too much exponential growth for my liking.

Haven't heard od Ascension, I'll check it out. Me and my husband are usually pretty even when we play Dominon though, it's usually just a few points separating us. Maybe we're just really bad at it  We play more for the entertainment than for winning though.

Another boardgame I really love, most of you have probably never heard of, because it's made after a norwegian book series. Not that I've read the books, lol, but my friend has. It's called Phenomena and it's a pretty typical fantasy-themed boardgame, you do stuff to kill the bad guy and along the way you earn points. It's just very well made, and a great game to play as a group (not so good for only two persons).

I like Agircola Nolder. Misheru Sedai, I just bought carcasonne. Tabletop is a web series on geekandsundry, which is Felicia Day's website (it's kind of like nerdist). The show is hosted by Wil Wheaton and he has friends come over and play different games. It's a good way to identify new games you'd like to play. That's were I found Misery and Agricola.

Theodora, what is the Game of Thrones game like? Is it a RPG?

I think its one of those made-up games where you just go around, pretending to be little finger, paying assassins gold to kill people named Ned.

I personally haven't played a table top game in years but I am addicted to watching the Table Top youtube series with Will Wheaton. That is an awesome show and it really makes me want friends who will actually play these games. Favourite episode so far was Betrayal at the House on the Hill.
