I do it before every freestyle race in swimming. That way I dont' have to worry about breathing for the first lap or so, which lets me go faster.

 

And on a side note, my sister has asthma, and she says that swimming doesn't set it off at all, even though running does. Something about the humidity of the air just above the water, I think.
